    Abstract: An alternative for smart card financial transactions is provided in which the smart card functionality is provided as part of a watch containing a RuBee antenna and transceiver for transmitting the authorization information to a receiver separate from the watch. This form factor allows the user to maintain the card in a readily usable and convenient location. In addition, the watch can be used to allow the user to specifically authorize or override a financial transaction, and to view and/or store information about the financial transaction, as well as conventional functionality such as alarms, and calendars. The watch of the invention can also provide access control or identification in corporate environments if desired.

    Abstract: A cart has at least three wheels. It has one or more loop antennas, and a radio transceiver connected with the antennas. The antennas and transceiver operate at a frequency lower than 1 megahertz. The loop antennas are each at least 0.2 square meters in area. The cart is moved to an area such as a room, and the transceiver communicates with various RF tags in the room. Because of the antenna configuration, the portion of spectrum employed, and the power levels used, the cart is able to communicate with most if not all of the RF tags in the room. The cart can then be moved to another area such as another room, and the process repeated. In this way an inventory of tags can be made without expensive permanently installed infrastructure. The system is robust against interferers such as large metal objects and intervening objects.

    Abstract: Methods and compositions to activate a genetically designated target cell (or population of target cells) artificially, in vivo or in vitro, employ triggering of heterologous stimulus-gated ion channels to activate the cells. The stimulus-gated ion channels are suitably TRPV1, TRPM8 or P2X2. A stimulus which leads to opening or “gating” of the ion channel can be a physical stimulus or a chemical stimulus. Physical stimuli can be provided by heat, or mechanical force, while chemical stimuli can suitably be a ligand, such as capsaicin for TRPV1 or ATP for P2X2, or a “caged ligand,” for example a photolabile ligand derivative, in which case a physical signal in the form of light is used to provide the chemical signal. Selective activation of the cell may be used for various applications including neuronal and neuroendocrine mapping and drug screening.

    Abstract: A polycarbonate is provided that contains repeat units derived from isosorbide and a residue derived from an activated diaryl carbonate. The polycarbonate has 1H-NMR peaks associated with the repeat units derived from isosorbide. The polycarbonate contains no more than a maximum allowable amount of sorbitol-derived color bodies. If these color bodies are present in the polycarbonate it has a 1H-NMR peak associated with the color bodies. The maximum allowable amount of color bodies are present when the integrated area of the 1H-NMR peak associated with the color bodies divided by the integrated areas of the 1H-NMR peaks associated with the repeat units derived from isosorbide is 0.025.

This byproduct stream is introduced to a distillation column to produce an alkanol tops stream and a first dialkyl carbonate bottoms stream. The alkanol tops stream is reacted with oxygen, carbon monoxide, and catalyst to form a second dialkyl carbonate stream that is introduced to the distillation column. The alkanol tops stream from the column contains alkanol, dialkyl carbonate, and less than 20 ppm aromatic compound. The first dialkyl carbonate bottoms stream from the column contains dialkyl carbonate, water, aromatic compound, and less than 2,000 ppm alkanol and is introduced to a water separation device to produce a product dialkyl carbonate stream and a water stream.

In one embodiment, the method includes introducing alkanol, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and a catalyst to a reactor having a gaseous head space and a liquid body space. The reactor is operated under conditions to form dialkyl carbonate and water. A product stream containing dialkyl carbonate, water, and residual reactants is removed from the head space of the reactor and introduced to a cyclone with a flushing stream. A liquid bottom stream is captured from the cyclone and introduced to the reactor. The gaseous top stream contains product dialkyl carbonate.

Rather, it is a characteristic of the signal that reflects the quality of the electrodes, the extent of fill of the electrochemical cell or characteristics of the sample other than analyte concentration such as oxygen levels or hematocrit.
