  • Patent number: 4721389
Abstract: A retroreflectivity measuring system measures performance data relating to a reflective surface, such as a highway stripe or marking containing reflective glass beads. A laser beam illuminates a portion of the reflective surface with radiation of a predetermined wavelength, the laser being incident on the surface at an incidence angle i. The incident laser beam is then reflected back, at least partially, at a particular observation angle o that is separated from the incidence angle by a divergence angle .delta.. A telephotomultiplier aimed at the illuminated area receives the reflected laser beam at the observation angle o. A preferred telephotomultiplier includes a telescope, a narrow pass optical filter for passing basically only the wavelength of the laser beam, and a sensitive photoelectric device, such as a multiplier phototube. The laser and the telephotomultiplier may be mounted on a servo-motor driven frame in order to scan the target area from a moving vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4702779
Abstract: A heat process for producing corrosion resistant steel articles, comprising a first step during which the articles placed in a furnace are nitrided in a gaseous atmosphere to produce on their surface a first layer consisting essentially of epsilon type iron nitride, followed by a second stage during which the articles are exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere to form a second, oxide-rich layer on the surface of the articles. According to the invention, during the first step, an atmosphere comprising 20 to 70% by volume of ammonia NH.sub.3, 1 to 5% by volume of nitrous oxide N.sub.2 O and 25 to 79% by volume of nitrogen N.sub.2 is introduced into the furnace, the concentration ratio of ammonia to nitrous oxide [NH.sub.3 ]/[N.sub.2 O] in the introduced atmosphere being greater than 5 so that the furnace atmosphere is not oxidizing, and during the second step, an atmosphere comprising 0 to 25% by volume NH.sub.3, 0 to 5% by volume N.sub.2 O and 70 to 100% by volume N.sub.

  • Patent number: 4700548
Abstract: The present invention comprises methods and apparatus for controlling the speed of a motor for a piece of ice slab refrigeration equipment, in response to variations in thermal load on the ice slab. The control apparatus comprises thermal load sensing means and motor drive means. The thermal load sensing means detects variations in the thermal load on the ice slab and generates an output signal correlatable with such variations. The motor drive means is operatively coupled to the thermal load sensing means and is connectable to the motor and drives the motor at various speeds correlatable with the variations in ice slab thermal load. The control apparatus of the present invention is particularly adapted to control the speed of an alternating current induction motor of a centrifugal brine pump motor.

  • Patent number: 4694874
Abstract: A band-type well obstructor for obstructing the well of the hub of a wheel rim, particularly for a pneumatic tire. The well obstructor has an inextensible band with integral circular protrusions mechanically extruded onto the band. The circular protrusions extend radially inwardly to abut against the base of the well to retain the band in position surrounding the well, and to resist crushing under the weight of the vehicle in the event of deflation of the tire. The well obstructor has a fastener assembly utilizing a screw with a groove adapted to receive a locking ring. The fastener assembly further has two transverse beams, one of which is adapted to fit over the end of the screw and abut against a locking washer placed between the transverse beam and the head of the screw. The locking ring is then snapped into place to hold this transverse beam in position. The second transverse beam is placed over the threaded end of the screw.

  • Patent number: RE32598
Abstract: A fluorescence spectrophotometer in which the optical system for the excitation monochromator includes an arrangement for forming an image of the exit slit of the monochromator adjacent a first surface of the sample being evaluated and for forming an aperture image adjacent a second surface of the sample. Fluorescence from the sample is directed to an emission monochromator which likewise has an arrangement for forming an image of the emission monochromator's entrance slit adjacent a third surface of the sample and for forming an aperture image adjacent a fourth surface. The optical components are arranged such that the images of the slits lie in a single plane defined by the axial rays of the excitation and fluorescence beams, and in several advantageous arrangements the slit images are oriented at 90.degree. from the slits themselves. The intensity of the output signal may be further increased by locating mirrors behind the sample holder to direct the light back through the sample for a second pass.
