  • Patent number: 6326286
Abstract: An active layer commonly used in a thin-film-transistor is made by irradiating an amorphous silicon layer with a laser source at an energy density sufficient to induce substantially complete melting to form a melted region and an unmelted region. The melted region of the amorphous silicon layer is solidified with a lateral grain growth from the unmelted region to the melted region. Then the amorphous silicon layer is translated relative to the laser source. In such an apparatus, the laser source is prepared by emitting a laser beam through a mask. The mask has a plurality of transparent regions which comprises slits arranged adjacent to or next to each other and separated by a predetermined distance in certain applications. Such pattern includes contiguous chevron-shaped lines with curved apexes. Alternatively, the pattern also includes slim rectangular apertures.

  • Patent number: 6323457
Abstract: A laser annealing apparatus has a laser generating section for producing a laser beam, a splitter arranged to partially reflect and partially transmit the laser beam. The apparatus has a first energy converting section for measuring the energy value of the laser beam reflected from the splitter and outputting it into an electrical signal and has an energy control section for comparing the output signal of the first energy converting section to a reference value and automatically correcting the energy value by the difference between them. A process window may be positioned so the laser beam can pass through a built-in slit for annelaing a substrate. The apparatus further has a second energy converting section for measuring the energy value of the laser beam passing through the process window. In response to the output of the second energy converting section, the energy control section corrects the energy intensity of the laser beam.

  • Patent number: 6320226
Abstract: A liquid crystal display having an increased pixel aperture ratio is disclosed along with a method of making same. An array of a-Si TFTs is deposited on a transparent substrate. Subsequently, an organic insulating layer (e.g. Benzocyclobutene) and a corresponding array of pixel electrodes are deposited over the TFT array so that the pixel electrodes overlap the display address lines thereby increasing the display's pixel aperture ratio. The low dielectric constant &egr; (e.g. about 2.7) and relatively high thickness (e.g. greater than about 1.5 &mgr;m) of the insulating layer reduce the pixel electrode-address line parasitic capacitance CPL in the overlap areas thereby reducing cross-talk (or capacitive coupling) in the display. In sum, an increased pixel aperture ratio is achieved without sacrificing display performance.
