Patent number: 8028343Abstract: A nanoindenter that includes an interferometer, a rod, a force actuator and a controller is disclosed. The interferometer generates a light beam that is reflected from a moveable reflector, the interferometer determining a distance between a reference location and the moveable reflector. The rod is characterized by a rod axis and includes a tip on a first end thereof, the rod includes the moveable reflector at a location proximate to the tip. The tip is disposed in a manner that allows the tip to be forced against the surface of a sample. The force actuator applies a force to the rod in a direction parallel to the rod axis in response to a force control signal coupled to the actuator. The controller receives the determined distance from the interferometer and generates the force control signal. The invention can also be used as a scanning probe microscope.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2009Date of Patent: September 27, 2011Assignee: Nanonmechanics, Inc.Inventors: Warren C. Patent number: 8018332Abstract: An emergency event reporting system combines emergency event detection means with a wireless beacon capable of communicating with the Cospas-Sarsat search-and-rescue satellite system. The system provides for the association of a beacon's unique identification number (UIN) with a third-party monitoring service to which the emergency event message is to be reported. In this way, civilian emergency events can be reliably handled without overwhelming limited government search and rescue resources. Several applications of the system are disclosed, which include reporting alarm messages from home and business security systems and crash alerts indicating the deployment of a vehicle air bag during a vehicle crash.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2007Date of Patent: September 13, 2011Assignee: Procon, Inc.Inventors: Brian M. Patent number: 8014973Abstract: A method for constructing a distance histogram for nearest neighbor classification. A training sample is determined for each of two classes. For each defect, a distance is measured in the feature space between the defect and the training sample for each of the classes. All of the distances for a given defect are normalized by dividing each distance for the given defect by the sum of all of the distances for the given defect. A histogram is constructed by plotting a chart of the normalized distances versus the number of defects having the distances. A threshold bar is placed on the center of the histogram to construct a normal nearest neighbor classifier. The threshold bar can be adjusted to the left or to the right to construct a weighted nearest neighbor classifier.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2008Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: KLA-Tencor CorporationInventor: Tong Huang

Patent number: 7989729Abstract: An apparatus for both detecting and repairing a shunt defect in a solar cell substrate. A shunt detection module detects the shunt defect in the substrate, using at least one of lock-in thermography and current-voltage testing. A process diagnostic module determines whether the substrate should be passed without further processing by the apparatus, rejected without further processing by the apparatus, or repaired by the apparatus. A shunt repair module electrically isolates the shunt defect in the substrate. In this manner, a single apparatus can quickly check for shunts and make a determination as to whether the substrate is worth repairing. If it is worth repairing, then the apparatus can make the repairs to the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2008Date of Patent: August 2, 2011Assignee: KLA-Tencor CorporationInventors: Guoheng Zhao, George H. Patent number: 7987057Abstract: A method of inspecting a pattern on a substrate, by extracting boundary locations from design data for repeating blocks within the pattern, inspecting the substrate at only the boundary locations of the repeating blocks, detecting alignment errors at the boundary locations, comparing the alignment errors to a threshold, and flagging the alignment errors that exceed the threshold. In this manner, the alignment errors that were of no consequence in larger design rule devices can be detected, and a determination can be made as to whether they adversely impact the proper operation of the integrated circuit that will eventually be formed from the pattern. By performing the inspection only on the boundary locations, a much higher magnification can be used than what would be reasonably possible for an inspection of the entire substrate.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2008Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Assignee: KLA-Tencor CorporationInventor: Tony DiBiase
