Abstract: The invention discloses a novel process for the preparation of a compound of formula II ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is C.sub.1-5 alkyl,R.sub.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-5 alkyl, andR.sub.3 is optionally substituted phenyl, comprising the reaction of a 4-hydroxypyrazole of formula III ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are as defined for formula II, with a benzylhalide of formula IVHal--CH.sub.2 --R.sub.3 (IV)wherein Hal is halogen, preferably bromine or chlorine, and R.sub.3 is as defined for formula II, in the presence of a base. The invention further comprises a novel process for the preparation of the 4-hydroxypyrazole of formula III. The compounds of formulae II and III are intermediates for highly effective systemic fungicides of the class of pyrazolyl acetic acid derivatives.

Abstract: Process for oxidizing 1,4-dichlorobenzene using a secondary synthesized zeolites or zeolite-like metallosilicates or a primary synthesized zeolite-like metallosilicate and a peroxide.
Abstract: The present invention provides, inter alia, the use in the screening of haploid or doubled haploid plants or seeds of at least one dominant gene selected from the group consisting of conditional lethal genes, screenable marker genes and selectable marker genes. Preferably the haploids are induced by haploid inducing genes, such as "indeterminate gametophyte". The invention still further provides haploid plants comprising said at least one dominant gene, and a process for the production thereof, together with plants which result from said use and said process.

Abstract: The present invention provides a novel gene and enzyme isolated from cocklebur (Xanthium sp.) which confers resistance to several structurally unrelated classes of herbicides in plants, plant tissues and seeds. In particular, the class of herbicides consists of herbicides wherein acetolactate synthase (ALS) is the site of action and includes sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, triazolopyrimidines, pyrimidyloxybenzoates and phthalides.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to promoter fragments isolated from maize and particularly to a 4.7 kbp upstream promoter region designated ZRP2 of a ZRP2 genomic DNA clone, specific fragments thereof designated ZRP2(2.0) and ZRF2(1.0) and functional equivalents thereto. The promoter has particular utility in driving root preferential expression of heterologous genes that impart increased agronomic, horticultural and/or pesticidal characteristics to a given plant. This invention is also directed to DNA molecules including said promoters and transformed plant tissue including a DNA molecule comprising a promoter of the invention operably linked to a heterologous gene or genes and the seeds thereof.

Abstract: A Brassica promoter (hsp80) has been isolated which can provide for constitutive expression of heterologous genes in a wide range of tissues and organs. Various deletion mutants and hybrid promoters are described which retain activity and/or which show enhanced activity. Upstream activating sequences are described which separately and in combination can provide for constitutive gene expression. These sequences can also confer constitutive expression on heterologous, non-constitutive promoters.
