Abstract: Topical formulations of CoQ10 reduce the rate of tumor growth in an animal subject. In the experiments described herein, CoQ10 was shown to increase the rate of apoptosis in a culture of skin cancer cells but not normal cells. Moreover, treatment of tumor-bearing animals with a topical formulation of CoQ10 was shown to dramatically reduce the rate of tumor growth in the animals.

Abstract: Disclosed is a disinfecting docking station for at least one portable electronic device, such as a medical technician's tablet computer, that has at least one recharging connector. An enclosure is adapted to receive the at least one portable electronic device therein through an openable side that includes a selectively closable door. Each electronic device is exposed to a disinfecting wavelength of light, such as UV light, to disinfect the surface of the device. The enclosure includes supports that minimally contact each device so that the device will be substantially exposed to the UV light. A control circuit monitors the exposure time and level, and is programmable to activate the UV light based on pre-set criteria. The enclosures may be stacked and provide power and network connectivity to each device while docked therein.
Abstract: An optical reader of a form is discussed where the form has a stored known boundary or boundaries. When the boundaries in a captured image do not match those of the stored known boundaries, it may be determined that an obstruction exists that will interfere with a correct reading of the form. The boundary may be printed, blank, and may include quiet areas, or combinations thereof in stored known patterns. A captured image of the form is compared to retrieved, stored boundary information and differences are noted. The differences may be thresholded to determine if an obstruction exists. If an obstruction is detected, the operator may be signaled, and the location may be displayed or highlighted. The form may be discarded or obstruction may be cleared and the form may be re-processed.

Abstract: A composite utility knife blade and method of making such a blade involves butt joining a tool steel wire to a front edge of an alloy steel backing strip. The wire is electron beam welded to the backing strip to form a composite strip defining a first metal portion formed by the alloy steel backing strip, a second metal portion formed by the tool steel wire, and a weld region joining the first and second metal portions. The composite strip is annealed and hardened such that the first metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 38 Rc to approximately 52 Rc, and the second metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 60 Rc to approximately 75 Rc. The hardened strip is then tempered, quenched, surface treated to form a sharpened cutting edge, scored, and separated into a plurality of blades.

Abstract: A personal computer connected to a USB port of a printer through a management table managing writing on an ordinary storage region in FLASH ROM recognizes the ordinary storage region in the FLASH ROM of the printer as a removable drive which is a USB mass storage class device. Accordingly, an execution file of an application program stored in a portion of the ordinary storage region in the FLASH ROM can be read with a usual access from the personal computer, enabling the application program to be executed without being installed. When the application program is executed on the personal computer, periodic accesses are made to the ordinary storage region of the printer, and when an access fails, the application program is terminated.
Abstract: Compositions and methods are disclosed for improving the effectiveness of a chemotherapeutic regimen to eradicate multidrug-resistant transformed cells from the body of a mammal, preferably from the body of a human. The present disclosure capitalizes on the discovery of a novel multidrug-resistance associated protein (MRP), herein designated MRP-?. The disclosed compositions include MRP-? nucleic acids, including probes and antisense oligonucleotides, MRP-? polypeptides and antibodies, MRP-? expressing host cells, and non-human mammals transgenic or nullizygous for MRP-?. The disclosed methods include methods for attenuating aberrant MRP-? gene expression, protein production and/or protein function. In addition, methods are disclosed for identifying and using a modulator, such as an inhibitor, of MRP-?. Preferably, the modulator is a small molecule.
Abstract: Microprocessor shifter circuits utilizing butterfly and inverse butterfly circuits, and control circuits therefor, are provided. The same shifter circuits can also perform complex bit manipulations at high speeds, including butterfly and inverse butterfly operations, parallel extract and deposit operations, group operations, mix operations, permutation operations, as well as instructions executed by existing microprocessors, including shift right, shift left, rotate, extract, deposit and multimedia mix operations. The shifter circuits can be provided in various combinations to provide microprocessor functional units which perform a plurality of bit manipulation operations.
Abstract: A hand-held color measurement device is provided that includes a housing with a measurement unit which receives measurement light through a measurement window, converts it into measurement signals, processes the measurement signals to form digital color measurement data, and provides it via a communications interface. A U-shaped bracket is arranged on the housing and includes a middle portion in which a diffuser is integrated. The two side arms of the bracket are rotatably mounted on the housing such that the bracket can be pivoted by 180° from a monitor position to an ambient light position and back to the monitor position, and wherein the diffuser lies in front of the measurement window in the ambient light position and is situated at a rear wall of the housing opposite the front wall in the monitor position. A holding mechanism is provided on the housing and on the two side arms of the bracket which fixes the bracket in its monitor position or ambient light position, respectively.

Abstract: A hand-held light measuring device includes a device housing (G) with a bottom face incorporating a measuring window (7) through which a measurement optical path extends so that a measurement object can be measured when the device housing (G) is positioned with its bottom face on the measurement object. The measuring device has an integrated, displaceably mounted white reference tile, which can be moved into the measurement optical path and moved back out of it again. The white reference tile is disposed in an end region of an oblong support plate (10) on its side directed towards the housing interior.
Abstract: A single disposable cartridge for performing a process on a particle, such as particle sorting, encapsulates all fluid contact surfaces in the cartridge for use with microfluidic particle processing technology. The cartridge interfaces with an operating system for effecting particle processing. The encapsulation of the fluid contact surfaces insures, improves or promotes operator isolation and/or product isolation. The cartridge may employ any suitable technique for processing particles.

Abstract: An apparatus for communicating with an RFID tag is provided which has a radio communicating device configured to conduct radio communication with a plurality of individual RFID tags constituting a single tag group and a single representative RFID tag associated so as to represent the tag group. A first information obtainment portion is configured to conduct first communication for search of the representative RFID tag corresponding to the individual RFID tag to be searched and to obtain information from the representative RFID tag; a switching determination portion configured to determine if the first communication in information obtainment satisfies a predetermined switching condition. A second information obtainment portion configured to conduct second communication for search of the individual RFID tag to be searched in a communication mode different from that of the first communication if the determination is satisfied and to obtain information from the individual RFID tag.
