  • Patent number: 5588916
Abstract: A device reducing the deleterious torque in a shock absorbing, rotary drive coupling unit used with a rotary mine drilling machine comprising: a drive plate connectable to a drive shaft of the rotary drilling machine, a driven plate connectable to a driven shaft which has a drill bit, a center portion for coupling the drive plate to the driven plate wherein the center portion includes a deformable shock, vibration and torque-absorbing member, and torque-relief means comprised of a first engagement member(s) connectable to the drive plate and a second engagement member(s) connectable to the driven plate. When the drill bit snags or jams during the operation of the rotary drilling machine, the torque-absorbing member deforms and absorbs some of the torque generated therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5586140
Abstract: A plasma melting furnace has a melting chamber having an anode torch and a cathode torch made of graphite and having a electric conductor disposed on the bottom thereof. When the furnace is operated, the anode torch, having an inflow of electrons, which forms an unstable plasma arc is contacted with the electric conductor and is not used, while the cathode torch, having an outflow of electrons, which forms a stable plasma arc, is utilized for heating, whereby the furnace can be stably and continuously operated. Thus, since the cathode torch which is used is not heated so much and the anode torch, which is liable to be heated to a great degree, is not used, the electrode consumption rate can be greatly reduced.

  • Patent number: 5582755
Abstract: A deep fat fryer includes a controller operatively connected to a heating element for controlling the operation thereof to apply heat to a cooking chamber. A temperature sensor is disposed in the cooking chamber for measuring the temperature in the cooking chamber and communicating the same to the controller. The controller selectively operates the heating means to apply heat to the cooking chamber. Utilizing the output of the temperature sensor, the controller automatically determines whether the medium contained in the cooking chamber is water, liquid shortening or solid shortening or whether the cooking chamber is empty.

  • Patent number: 5579983
Abstract: A welding apparatus is provided which includes a rail member 5 installed along a side and a corner portion of a steel frame post, a pinion 46 mounted to a horizontally movable shifting member 50 such that even at the corner portion of the steel frame post 1 the pinion 46 is constantly held in mesh engagement with a rack 6 disposed on a side of the rail member 5, and a position holding roller 57 for guiding the shifting member 50 in a horizontal direction so that the distance between the rack 6 and the pinion 46 is kept constant. During the movement of the carriage, the distance between the rack and the pinion is kept constant to enable welding operations to be performed in succession with respect to side and corner portions of the steel frame post. Therefore, after a face-to-face welding operation at one side is completed, such a welding operation at the other side may be carried out without the necessity of removing the carriage from the rail member.

  • Patent number: 5577720
Abstract: A sensing device comprised of a sensing circuit which changes its operating characteristics when an object comes near it. The sensing circuit produces a change in output voltage proportional to the change in relative distance between the sensing circuit and an object. The actual output voltage is a function of both target distance and control circuit input voltage. The control circuit includes a comparator for comparing the steady state output voltage to a reference voltage and adjustment system for adjusting the input voltage to change the steady state output voltage such that the steady state output voltage approximately equals the reference voltage. The control circuit reacts only to reductions in the steady state output voltage, indicative of mechanical wear, and not to increases in output voltage, indicative of currency thickness measurement.
