  • Patent number: 8304293
Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for improving the thermal performance of integrated circuit packages. Aspects of the present invention include improved thermal package structures and methods for producing the same through the application of one or more thermal spreaders in the package. In embodiments, a thermal spreader is incorporated in a semiconductor chip package between a semiconductor die and its die pad. By including a thermal spreader in an IC package, the package can handle higher levels of power while maintaining approximately the same temperature of the package or can reduce the temperature of the package when operating at the same power level, as compared to a package without a thermal spreader.

  • Patent number: 8305401
Abstract: A light management unit (LMU) includes multiple brightness compensation modules and algorithms mixed together in a digital domain. The LMU is configured to receive content data, such as gamma correction data generated by a graphics or video processor and corresponding to frames of video data, ambient light data obtained using a light sensor, ambient temperature data using a temperature sensor, and a manual brightness setting. An ambient light compensation value is multiplied into the manual brightness settings so the resulting compensation value is a percent of the manual settings. A content adjustment interface (CAI) module is configured to compensate the backlight brightness according to real-time video data. The content adjustment performed by the CAI module is combined with the ambient light adaptive dimming. A final stage step generator enables a gradual brightness transition to minimize, if not eliminate jitter and jump.

  • Patent number: 8269172
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, devices and methods for detecting both ambient light and proximity to an object. This detection is performed by a double-layered photodiode array and corresponding circuitry such that ambient light and proximity detection are enabled by a plurality of integrated photodiodes. In various embodiments of the invention, ambient light is sensed using a first set of photodiodes and a second set of photodiodes such that a spectral response is created that is approximately equal to the visible light spectrum. Proximity detection is realized using an integrated photodiode, positioned below the first and second sets of photodiodes, that detects infrared light and generates a response thereto.

  • Patent number: 8269345
Abstract: A bump contact electrically connects a conductor on a substrate and a contact pad on a semiconductor device mounted to the substrate. The first end of an electrically conductive pillar effects electrical contact and mechanical attachment of the pillar to the contact pad with the pillar projecting outwardly from the semiconductor device. A solder crown reflowable at a predetermined temperature into effecting electrical contact and mechanical attachment with the conductor is positioned in axial alignment with the second end of the pillar. A diffusion barrier electrically and mechanically joins the solder bump to the second end of the pillar and resists electro-migration into the first end of the solder crown of copper from the pillar. One diffusion barrier takes the form of a 2-20 micron thick control layer of nickel, palladium, titanium-tungsten, nickel-vanadium, or tantalum nitride positioned between the pillar and the solder crown.

  • Patent number: 8249463
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, devices and methods for managing skew within a polarized multi-channel optical transport system. In a DP-QPSK system, skew between polarized channels is compensated within the transport system by adding latency to at least one of the polarized channels. The amount of added latency may depend on various factors including the skew tolerance of the transport system and the amount of skew across the channels without compensation. This latency may be added optically or electrically, and at various locations on a channel signal path within a transport node, such as a terminal transmitter or receiver. Additionally, various embodiments of the invention provide for novel methods of inserting frame alignment bit sequences within the transport frame overhead so that alignment and skew compensation may be more efficiently and accurately performed at the transport receiver.

  • Patent number: 8230414
Abstract: A system, apparatus and a method are described for providing efficient software distribution and cache management on a plurality of client machines in a network. In one embodiment of the invention, a cache management software agent is installed on one or more client machines to monitor a status of software versions stored locally on the machines. The cache management software agent performs a check before uploading a matching version of a large software application from a network element in order to determine whether the upload is appropriate. In particular, the agent identifies whether a matching version of the application is already present on the client machine to see if the upload is necessary. If a matching version of the application is not resident on the machine, then the latest version of the large software application is uploaded to the client machine from the network element.

  • Patent number: 8175261
Abstract: An echo canceller comprises foreground and background filters. The background filter locates and confirms peaks, defines active regions centered about the confirmed peaks and updates coefficients of the foreground filter when the background filter is more effective than the foreground filter. A method for improved adaptive echo cancellation comprises configuring a foreground filter, calculating an echo-return loss responsive to the foreground filter, identifying the location of one or more peaks repetitively in a block of data in a background filter, confirming one or more identified peaks over a defined number of blocks before defining an active region equally about the identified peaks in the background filter, filtering the sparse impulse response responsive to the active regions, calculating an echo-return loss responsive to the background filter, and updating the foreground filter when the background filter includes a more effective set of filter coefficients.
