  • Patent number: 7800925
Abstract: Mitigating the DC content of an AC output from an inverter is important for electrical system reliability. The inverter may be powered by unbalanced DC inputs while still mitigating the DC content of the AC output wavefrom. The present invention provides methods to mitigate the DC content in the output DC voltage by reshaping the PWM reference signals (carrier signals) according to the DC content in such a way that the DC content is canceled. These reshaped PWM reference signals may be, for example, unsymmetrical reference waveforms. Unlike conventional methods for providing an AC voltage from a DC voltage with an inverter, which may result in DC content in the output AC voltage when an unbalanced DC input voltage is supplied, the present invention provides methods for mitigating the DC content in an AC voltage, even if the inverter providing the AC voltage is supplied with unbalanced DC voltage.

  • Patent number: 7750606
Abstract: An electrical power system may be provided with temporary power from a bank of supercapacitors connected to a bus of the power system. The supercapacitors may be charged from an output from a primary power source of the system during start-up of the power source. Output voltage of the primary power source may progressively increase and capacitor charging may occur at this progressively increasing voltage. Dedicated current-limiting devices are not required during charging. When temporary power is required the supercapacitors may be discharged sequentially in a series combination so that a high internal voltage of each capacitor is maintained and so that virtually all of the stored energy of the capacitor may be discharged to the bus at a usable voltage.

  • Patent number: 7741749
Abstract: An inner crossover support clip may be used to support a crossover wire joining two adjacent rotor coils on a rotating machine, such as a generator. The support clip of the present invention may be capable of withstanding forces, such as centrifugal forces, that lead to the failure of conventional crossover wires. The support clip may be formed of a sheet material bent at an angle to form an inside surface thereon and may include a tie edge formed on each end of the sheet material. The tie edge attaches to adjacent rotor coils of a rotating machine and the inside surface supports a crossover wire electrically connecting the adjacent rotor coils.

  • Patent number: 7741883
Abstract: A solid state switching device (SSSD) for AC and DC high power solid state power controller includes, for DC applications, a MOSFET and an IGBT connected in parallel and an optional zener diode connecting a collector and a gate of the IGBT. For AC applications, the SSSD includes a “back to back” pair of MOSFETs connected in parallel with a pair of counter-parallel IGBTs, each in series with a diode, and, optionally, zener diodes “back to back” with conventional diodes connecting a collector and a gate of each of the IGBT. A method of switching establishes a sequence of turning on/off the MOSFET(s) and the IGBT(s) wherein the IGBT(s) turn on before and turn off after the MOSFET(s). A negative feedback prevents a voltage of SSSD rising above predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 7736126
Abstract: A centrifugal compressor is modified by forming a bypass between the leading edge of the compressor diffuser and a point downstream from the throat of the diffuser. The bypass may be unidirectional or bi-directional. In a bi-directional embodiment, an operable flow range of the compressor can be widened in both directions of a compressor map, i.e., extending both the surge and choke margins of a compressor at the expense of normal operating efficiencies. In a unidirectional bypass embodiment the flow range may be increased only in one direction, but there is no diminishment of efficiency of the compressor at normal operating conditions. The modification provides a simple expedient for increasing flow range without a need to redesign a compressor.

  • Patent number: 7735670
Abstract: A system and process to deplete or remove oxygen in the ullage of a fuel tank to reduce the oxygen/fuel vapor ratio below a lower explosion limit by exposing the ullage compounds to an oxygen removal catalyst active at a relatively low temperature. The oxygen removal catalyst may be a non-precious metal catalyst. A selective reaction of the oxygen by the catalyst forms primarily alcohols, aldehydes, and/or ketones and produces less than about 5% water by volume. The selective reaction, occurring at the relatively low temperature, reduces the risk of flammability of the fuel.

  • Patent number: 7732939
Abstract: On an aircraft, primary power distribution control and secondary power distribution control may be performed with a single line replaceable module (LRM) having an integrated architecture. The LRM may be provided with trip engines that are based on digital signal processors (DSP's). The DSP's may be programmed to allow the trip engines to perform either ELCU functions or SSPC functions. Use of the single LRM precludes a need for complex circuitry that might otherwise be required to coordinate prior-art independent ELCU and SSPC controls.

  • Patent number: 7728477
Abstract: A permanent magnet rotor of a generator is used to excite a electromagnet stator to generate electric power for the generator and to control a disengagement mechanism whereby the generator can disengage from an accessory, such as a gear box drive shaft, when the generator is not working properly. The permanent magnet is affixed to an outer ball screw which normally rotates with an inner ball screw that is operatively engaged to the accessory. An increased load to the electromagnet stator slows or stops rotation of the permanent magnet rotor and outer ball screw, causing the inner ball screw to move axially from the outer ball screw and away from an accessory and toward a re-settable lock.

  • Patent number: 7719239
Abstract: A voltage regulator for controlling over-voltage conditions in an electrical generator by rapidly discharging the generator field winding current into a discharge resistor upon the detection of the over-voltage. A field discharge transistor is switched by a soft switching circuit to direct the generator field winding current to the discharge resistor. A hysteresis circuit detects when a point of regulation voltage exceeds a first threshold triggering the discharge of the generator field winding current. The hysteresis circuit also detects when the point of regulation voltage goes below a second lower threshold and triggers the field discharge transistor to bypass the discharge resistor and return to a normal mode.
