  • Patent number: 8279490
Abstract: In a matrix area, a plurality of linear areas each of which extends in a tilt direction tilted relatively to row and column directions are arranged in a direction perpendicular to the tilt direction without spaces, and the plurality of linear areas are alternatively assigned to first and second element groups along an arrangement direction. One element is specified in each element group and subsequently process of specifying an element farthest from specified elements, is repeated to acquire a turn-on order of dots with increase in gray level in one grayscale range and a turn-off order of dots with decrease in gray level in the remaining grayscale range, and a threshold value of each element is determined according to these orders. Thus, generated is a threshold matrix capable of reducing graininess in a halftone image with directionality in the tilt direction, and improving the reproduction of thin lines and characters.

  • Patent number: 8273085
Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument includes a body portion, an actuator, a first jaw having a first electrode and a second jaw. The first electrode has a relatively large area seal surface with a relatively small edge portion and a third electrode, and the second jaw has a second electrode having a relatively large area seal surface and a smaller edge portion. The actuator moves the jaws between an first, open position, a second position for grasping tissue, and a third position where the jaws are further closed such that the first and second seal surfaces are adjacent each other and only the edge portions are exposed. An electrosurgical generator is connected to deliver a coagulation RF waveform between the first and second jaws when in the second position, and to deliver a cutting RF waveform between one or both of the first and second electrodes and the third electrode when the jaw members are in the third position.

  • Patent number: 8273287
Abstract: A plant for the production of ore comprising a proportion of fines, additives and green agglomerates optionally containing a binder, provided with an outer coating consisting of a combustible containing fine-grained carbon, such as coke. In the plant, the ore is mixed with the additives and the optionally available binder. The mixture is pelletized and the green agglomerates thus formed are coated with the combustible, whereby the combustible is introduced into an agglomeration drum. In order to enable continual production of homogeneous-quality green agglomerates, the mixture is pelletized in the agglomeration drum and the combustible is added in an area of the longitudinal extension of the agglomeration drum where the size of the green agglomerates formed in the agglomeration drum is sufficient for further processing.

  • Patent number: 8274279
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for detecting flaws in electrically conductive materials by observing properties of the back-EMF of the eddy current field generated by driving magnetic flux through the object to be examined. The input signal may include sweeps at several frequencies, and may do so at one time under the principle of wave superposition. The sectorial observations of eddy currents summations may be compared to a known datum for a defect free material, the presence of anomalies in eddy field back EMF divergence tending to provide an indication of an irregularity in the underlying eddy field, and hence in the underlying material itself. The portable unit may have a number of different configurations depending on the nature of the object to be examined, be it a flat or large radius plate, a flange, a rail, or some other structural element.

  • Patent number: 8275461
Abstract: A system and method for treating pain are disclosed. A voltage source provides an electric current, and a switching waveform controller receives the electric current and provides a first signal having a first waveform of a first frequency. A switching high frequency generator receives the electric current and provides a second signal having a waveform of a second frequency that is higher than the first frequency. A microprocessor controls the switching waveform controller and the switching high frequency generator. The second signal is superimposed on the first signal, providing a modified first signal. • Patent number: 8271135
Abstract: An apparatus for holding a medical device has an arm unit equipped with, for example, a polyarticular arm, which holds the medical device such as endoscope movably in the space. Additionally to a determination unit and a controller, the holding apparatus has an operation unit equipped with a plurality of operation members with which an operator's operation causes the arm unit to be moved spatially. The determination unit determines whether or not operator's operations at the plurality of operation members corresponds to an improper state deviating from a properly operated state in which at least two predetermined operation members have been operated within a predetermined period of time which is set to measure simultaneity for operations. If it is determined that the operation is in the improper state, the controller prohibits the arm unit from moving. As long as the operation is proper, the arm unit can be moved.

  • Patent number: 8262350
Abstract: A heat insulating structure for an expansion turbine includes an adiabatic expansion device including an expander body that includes an outlet passage for refrigerant fluid at a central portion thereof and an introduction chamber for refrigerant fluid communicating with an inlet of the outlet passage on an outer peripheral portion thereof, and a turbine impeller that is rotatably provided at the inlet and braked by a braking device. The adiabatic expansion device adiabatically expands refrigerant fluid by rotating the turbine impeller with refrigerant fluid that flows from the introduction chamber to the outlet passage side. A heat-insulating layer, which surrounds the entire periphery of the outlet passage over the entire length of the introduction chamber, is formed between the introduction chamber and the outlet passage. Accordingly, it is possible to improve turbine efficiency by reducing transfer of heat of refrigerant fluid from the introduction chamber to the outlet passage.
