Abstract: A flat zinc anode useful in cells and batteries, e.g., Leclanche batteries, is produced by coating an electrically conductive substrate with a slurry of zinc dust and an aqueous polymer latex in which the polymer particles have been swollen by an alcohol. The amount of the polymer is about 0.5 to 5 weight percent based on the amount of zinc. The amount of polymeric binder is not sufficient to form a continuous film but rather forms an adhesive mass which holds the zinc dust particles in place. Many polymers are suitable for use as binders, and it is presently preferred to employ, e.g., soft vinyl polymers, acrylates, or elastomers which do not react with zinc to impair battery performance or stability of the mix.
Abstract: Novel compounds are disclosed which release a photographic reagent in the presence of alkali and are therefore useful in photographic products and processes. The compounds may be defined as quinone- or naphthoquinonemethide precursors containing a mercapto-azole or azine photographic reagent moiety.
Abstract: The color speeds of a multicolor photosensitive element are balanced during the manufacture thereof by continuously introducing into said element optical filter means adapted to modulate the photographic color speed of at least one of the selectively sensitized silver halide emulsions relative to the other(s), and then adjusting the density of said optical filter means during coating to an amount sufficient to obtain the desired color balance.
Abstract: Illumination from a photoflash lamp is limited to radiation useful for photographic exposure by providing the photoflash lamp with an infrared absorbing filter possessing photographically desirable transmission properties in the visible region of the spectrum.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to diffusion transfer photographic products especially useful as film units in film packs or the like. Essentially the photographic products presented comprise a photosensitive element which after processing can provide a useable negative which is preferably produced concurrently with the formation of a positive image pattern.
Abstract: Novel bis type heterocyclic quaternary salts are provided which are useful in the preparation of various linked cyanine dyes and related compounds.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION1. Field of the InventionThis invention relates to chemistry and, more particularly, to novel double or "bis-type" quaternary salts of heterocyclic bases and processes useful in the synthesis of various linked cyanine dyes and related compounds.2. Description of the Prior ArtMost of the reactions leading to cyanine dyes and those compounds related to them are of the condensation type wherein two active dye intermediates react under suitable conditions with the elimination of some simple molecule, such as mineral acid, mercaptan, alcohol, water, aniline or acetanilide.
Abstract: Spectral sensitivity is imparted to a photosensitive material by novel linked sensitizing dye compounds having an alkylene-amide linking moiety.
Abstract: The present invention relates to photography and, more particularly, to a novel radiation recording photographic diffusion transfer process film unit which comprises a photosensitive element which includes, in combination, a particulate dispersion of photosensitive crystals, preferably, photosensitive silver halide crystals adapted to be reduced to silver, upon contact with a silver halide reducing agent, as a function of the crystals' exposure to incident actinic electromagnetic radiation, having associated therewith an inorganic semiconductor adapted to donate electrons to the photosensitive crystals as a function of the exposure of the element to incident actinic electromagnetic radiation.
Abstract: A blue-colored filter element of an additive color screen possessing enhanced light stability is prepared by applying to a hydrophilic colloid area an acid triphenyl methane dye and a phthalocyanine dye possessing at least two sulfonic acid groups.
Abstract: A flat zinc anode useful in cells and batteries, e.g., Leclanche batteries, is produced by coating an electrically conductive substrate with a slurry of zinc dust and an aqueous polymer latex in which the polymer particles have been swollen by an alcohol. The amount of the polymer is about 0.5 to 5 weight per cent based on the amount of zinc.
Abstract: A galvanic cell, particularly a primary battery cell, having as the sole electrolyte a quaternary ammonium salt, particularly tetraalkyl ammonium chloride.
Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor for battery anodes, e.g., metals such as zinc, lead, and the like, in primary battery cells, comprises a quaternary ammonium salt, particularly, tetraalkyl ammonium chloride.
Abstract: The characteristics of the surface of an article may be modified, e.g., in respect to adhesion, wettability or other physical characteristics, by exposing the surface to an electrical discharge in a mixture of certain gases. The practice of this invention is particularly useful in improving the gelatin adherence characteristics of a photographic film base support.
Abstract: Silver halide emulsion layers are formed by applying a water-soluble silver halide complex to a gelled substrate, and treating to decomplex to form silver halide crystals therein.
Abstract: A diagnostic test device comprising an absorbent medium adapted to receive and retain a measured amount of fluid containing the substance to be tested and reagents adapted to contact said fluid to provide a visual determination of the presence and/or concentration of the substance, wherein the absorbent medium comprises a substantially non-swellable material of substantially uniform and constant porosity and thickness.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to novel photographic products for use in color diffusion transfer systems wherein at least one of the layers of the film unit contains an amount of a glucoside humectant effective to stabilize the silver halide emulsion(s) thereof against fog during storage.
Abstract: A diagnostic test device comprising a first and second sheet attached at a leading edge; an absorbent medium intermediate said first and second sheet in spaced relationship to said sheets. The fluid containing the substance to be analyzed is placed on the absorbent medium. Compressive force would then be applied to the test device to remove excess fluid from the absorbent medium and to bring the fluid into contact with the first and second sheets which contain reagents adapted to react with the substance to provide a colorimetric determination of the presence and/or concentration of the substance.
Abstract: Novel, water-insoluble bis-pyrazolone oxonol dyes are provided wherein each pyrazolone nucleus carries an alkyl sulfonamidophenyl moiety on the 1-position nitrogen atom and an electron-withdrawing substituent on the 3-position carbon atom.
