  • Patent number: 7136534
Abstract: A system and method for quality-based image compression utilizing adaptively sized blocks and sub-blocks of discrete cosine transform coefficient data and a quality based quantization scale factor is claimed. A block size assignment element in an encoder element selects the block or sub-block of an input block of pixel data to be processed. Blocks with variances larger than a threshold are subdivided, while blocks with variances smaller than a threshold are not subdivided. A transform element transforms the pixel values of the selected blocks into the frequency domain. The frequency domain values are quantized either on a block by block basis or a frame by frame basis utilizing a scale factor that correlates with the quality of the image. The data is then serialized and coded in preparation for transmission.

  • Patent number: 7137003
Abstract: Power management techniques for a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) of a wireless communication device (WCD) are described tat make use of a unique identifier for the SIM. In particu1ar a processor within the WCD reads a first unique identifier from the SIM when power is initially supplied to the WCD, and stores the first unique identifier within a computer-readable medium within the WCD. During a power management cycle, where power is terminated and then re-supplied to the SIM, the processor again receives a unique identifier from the SIM and compares the second unique identifier with the stored unique identifier. These tecbniques are useful in detecting whether the attached SIM has been exchanged for a different SIM while powered down during a power management cycle.

  • Patent number: 7133222
Abstract: The described embodiments provide devices and methods for securing a lens member in a mobile electronic device. The lens member is positionable between a front housing and a rear housing of the device such that inner surfaces of the housings both exert a biasing force on the lens member such that the lens member is substantially immovable relative to the inner surfaces. As such, the lens member is securely fixed within the housings and cannot be removed or separated from one or both housings without evidence of tampering.

  • Patent number: 7133437
Abstract: Techniques for deriving interpolated pilot symbols for a gated pilot in a wireless (e.g., IS-856, cdma2000, or W-CDMA) communication system. In one method, first and second recovered pilot symbols for first and second time instances, respectively, are initially obtained (e.g., derived based on pilot bursts for the gated pilot). A phase change induced in the received signal at a third time instance between the first and second time instances is estimated. First and second phase-rotated symbols are next derived based on the first and second recovered pilot symbols and the estimated induced phase change. Interpolated pilot symbols between the first and third time instances are then derived (e.g., using linear interpolation) based on the first recovered pilot symbol and the first phase-rotated symbol. Similarly, interpolated pilot symbols between the third and second time instances are derived based on the second phase-rotated symbol and the second recovered pilot symbol.

  • Patent number: 7130282
Abstract: A system and method for providing group communication services is disclosed. Each of a plurality of group communication devices coverts media, such as video, audio, image and/or data into data packets suitable for transmission over a data network, such as the Internet. The data packets are selectively transmitted through the data network to a communications manager. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any communication device to be selectively routed to the plurality of communication devices based on the types of the communication devices and/or the requests received from the corresponding users. The communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.

  • Patent number: 7130288
Abstract: In a disclosed embodiment, a “voice noise power” is added to an aggregate voice power which is the total voice power used by all users in a cell. The voice noise power is transmitted in addition to the aggregate voice power in order to maintain the total of the aggregate voice power and voice noise power at a pre-determined voice power limit. In one embodiment, the voice power limit can be increased or decreased to further improve control over power consumption during voice and data transmission. Further, in order to maintain the power consumed by data transmission at a desired level, data noise is transmitted after transmission of a data burst, or in between data bursts, by inserting a pre-determined amount of artificial data into the gaps in data transmission. The data noise is transmitted in addition to the data bursts in order to maintain the total power consumed during data transmission at a desired level.

  • Patent number: 7123617
Abstract: An improved method and system for transmitting a stream of data bytes through a channel whose capacity may change during transmission. By utilization of selective regions of sequence number space, the enhanced radio link protocol (RLP) provides the benefits of large byte sequence numbers while transmitting a fraction of the sequence number bits in the majority of over-the-air frames. Frame header sequence numbers are shortened by dividing the byte sequence number by a page size, and by performing a modulo function on the byte sequence number.

  • Patent number: 7123590
Abstract: Techniques to test a wireless communication link using configurable channels and rates. A W-Markov test service may be invoked to test and/or verify the performance of the downlink and/or uplink using at least one transport channel for each link. Each transport channel may be individually configured. The W-Markov test service supports generation of test data based on a defined data sequence or a pseudo-random number generator. The testing may be performed based on a particular deterministic or pseudo-random activity model. For voice call testing, a first-order Markov model may be used to model voice activity and to select the rate to use for each transmission time interval (TTI). For Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR), testing may be performed based on configurable AMR rates and silence descriptor (SID) types. The test data generation processes are synchronized between the transmitter and receiver. Bit, frame, and/or block error rates and other statistics may be collected.

  • Patent number: 7120429
Abstract: A system and method for controlling software applications on one or more wireless devices where each wireless device is in selective communication with one or more application managing servers over a wireless network. Each wireless device has one or more selectively executable resident software applications and at least one software application requires a valid license for each execution, and upon the attempted execution of a software application, the wireless device determines if a license is present. If a license is not present, the wireless device selectively prompts, either automatically or at the direction of the user of the wireless device, an application managing server for transmission of a license, receives the transmitted license, and installs the license on the wireless device such that the software application is again licensed and executable.
