  • Patent number: 7085295
Abstract: Techniques to search for pilots over code space in a CDMA system. In one aspect, the pilot search is performed using a number of substages, and the search windows for each substage are selected such that the relevant code space is searched while reducing search time. In one specific implementation, two substages are used to search for pilots. The detect substage searches through (e.g., fixed-size) search windows to detect for peaks in the received signal. The dwell substage then searches through (e.g., variable-size) search windows to re-evaluate the detected peaks and remove noise peaks. The dwell windows may be formed such that a code space as small as possible is searched (to reduce search time) but large enough to account for possible drift in the detected peaks. Variable number of peaks may be provided by the dwell substage for the variable-size dwell windows.

  • Patent number: 7079511
Abstract: A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for performing seamless handoff of a mobile station (MS) between Radio Access Networks (RANs) that use different types of wireless interfaces. The described embodiments enable an MS to handoff between different RANs without causing routing ambiguity, and without substantial loss of network data. Upon moving from the coverage area of a first RAN using a first wireless interface to the coverage area of a second RAN using a second wireless interface, an MS determines whether routing ambiguity may result from the change of RAN and, based on the determination, triggers a re-registration of its network address. A foreign agent (FA) within a packet data serving node (PDSN) monitors network address re-registrations in order to determine whether multiple RAN-PDSN (R-P) connections are being created for the same MS. Based on this determination, the PDSN terminates redundant R-P network connections resulting from movement of the MS between different RANs.

  • Patent number: 7076263
Abstract: Techniques for controlling the transmit power for a number of data streams in a wireless multi-channel (e.g., MIMO) communication system. In one method, a number of received symbol streams are initially processed in accordance with a particular (e.g., CCMI, CCMI-SC, MMSE, or MMSE-SC) receiver processing technique to provide a number of detected data streams. The post-detection SNRs of the detected data streams are estimated, and each SNR that exceeds a setpoint is identified. This setpoint may correspond to (1) the SNR needed to achieve the maximum allowed spectral efficiency or (2) the target SNR needed to achieve a specified spectral efficiency. A new (or adjusted) transmit power for each detected data stream associated with a post-detection SNR that exceeds the setpoint is determined and used for the data stream. Different power control schemes are provided for different classes of receiver processing techniques with different characteristics.

  • Patent number: 7076266
Abstract: A technique for calibrating the open-loop transmit power of a wireless communication device overcomes the inherent nonlinearities in the gain control input of a variable gain amplifier (VGA). In one embodiment, a feedback circuit generates a signal indicative of the transmit power. This signal is compared with a desired transmit power level, which comprises an open-loop gain component and a closed-loop gain component. The desired transmit power level is compared with the actual transmit power level and an error signal is generated. The error signal is used to alter the gain of the VGA in the transmitter to thereby adjust the actual transmit power level to correspond with the desired transmit power level. In alternative embodiment, the receiver portion, which also contains a VGA, is pre-calibrated in a conventional manner. During a transmitter calibration process, the transmitter is coupled to the receiver input through a mixer and filter. The pre-calibrated receiver determines the actual transmit power level.

  • Patent number: 7072306
Abstract: A method and device is disclosed for outer loop power control for communication over a channel employing DTX. A device having DTX detection compensates for a known non-zero probability of DTX detection given an Erasure frame, P(D|E), by determining a compensation factor and adjusting a desired or expected target FER with the compensation factor to achieve a compensated target FER. The P(D|E) may be known or estimated to be a constant value, the value of P(D|E) may also be dynamically determined based on channel conditions. The method and device may also compensate for a non-zero P(E|D), i.e. a probability of an Erasure detection given a DTX. A number of consecutive DTX indications triggers the outer loop to reduce the power control setpoint by a predetermined value or by a dynamically determined value. A dynamic value may be determined from an identified number of Erasure frame detections.
