  • Patent number: 4026817
Abstract: An oil in water emulsion is prepared as a continuous process by causing a stream of water to flow through a duct containing a Venturi providing a converging frustum of a cone zone, a diverging frustum of a cone zone and a central zone joining the two frustum of a cone zones, so that the stream flows through a zone upstream of the Venturi where it is directed along a helicoidal path through the converging frustum of a cone zone to the central zone, drawing oil for emulsification to the duct at the zone upstream of the Venturi and causing it to flow along a helicoidal path in the same direction as the water to the central zone so that the oil and water mix and emulsify in that central zone, causing the emulsion so formed to flow through the diverging frustum of a cone zone, then causing the emulsion to flow along a helicoidal path of reverse slope, and thereafter discharging the emulsion from the duct.

  • Patent number: 4017553
Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of oligomers starting from linear alpha-olefins and to the subsequent hydrogenation thereof to saturated oligomers products, and more particularly to the catalyst system used in the oligomer preparation reaction, the catalyst system consisting of a first component selected amongst the halogenated organo-metal aluminium components, and a second component capable of reacting with the first one and chosen amongst halogens or interhalogenic compounds and metal halides; thus higher yields of oligomers, as well as an easier performance and a control of the reaction are achieved. In turn the hydrogenation step is carried out in the presence of a known hydrogenation catalyst, at a temperature of 150 to 300.degree. C and under a pressure of from 20 to 150 atmospheres.

  • Patent number: 4012919
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method for rapidly laying a pipeline in deep water by an anchored floating means. The rapid laying is obtained by varying the forces exerted by winches mounted on the floating means in such a manner as to impart a rapid movement to the floating means, in the longitudinal direction of laying, for a distance equal to the length of the piece of pipe added to the free end of the pipeline to be laid. Before termination of the rapid movement there is applied to the floating means a compensating force, whose direction, sense and intensity are such that, together with the forces exerted by the winches, said compensating force opposes moment by moment the central elastic force which induces a damped oscillatory motion in the floating means. This oscillation is thus eliminated or drastically and rapidly dampened.

  • Patent number: 4013589
Abstract: The mechanical and thermal properties of aluminum oxide, such as .gamma. alumina, adapted for use as a catalyst or catalyst carrier are improved through a treatment thereof with a silicon compound containing hydrolyzable radicals, such as methyl orthosilicate, in which the aluminum compound is impregnated with the silicon compound or a solution thereof in a compatible organic solvent whose boiling point is lower than the boiling point of the silicon compound. The impregnated aluminum oxide is slowly brought to the boiling temperature of the silicon compound in an inert atmosphere so as to cause silicon compound to react with the aluminum oxide and to distill off reaction products and excess silicon compound. The hydrolyzable groups bound to the silicon compound on the aluminum oxide are then reacted with water and distilled off.

  • Patent number: 4013718
Abstract: Urea is produced through an integrated, isobaric process in which raw ammonia synthesis gas, consisting essentially of H.sub.2, N.sub.2 and sufficient CO.sub.2 to produce the urea and compressed to a pressure slightly above the urea synthesis pressure, is decarbonated in a vertical film heat exchanger where it is contacted with a thin aqueous film containing NH.sub.3 with which the CO.sub.2 reacts to produce a concentrated carbamate solution that is withdrawn from the bottom of the exchanger and fed to a urea reactor. The compressed, unreacted synthesis gas containing traces of CO and saturated with NH.sub.3 is withdrawn from the upper part of the heat exchanger, NH.sub.3 is separated therefrom and recycled to the heat exchanger, and the balance of the unreacted synthesis gas is subjected to methanation to eliminate any CO and CO.sub.2 therein.
