Abstract: A photographic DIR (development inhibitor-releasing) acetanilide coupler containing a carboxy group on the anilide moiety or a DIR naphtholic coupler containing on the 2-position a --CONH.sub.2 or --CONHCH.sub.3 group, capable upon oxidative coupling of forming a dye capable of being washed out of a photographic element upon processing, contains, in the coupling position, a coupling-off group comprising, in sequence, at least one ballasted linking group and at least one releasable development-inhibitor group (INH) which is a mercaptotetrazole group which enables a Log P in a pH 10 buffer of lower than -0.8. Such a DIR coupler is especially useful in a color photographic silver halide material and process which enables the dye formed from the DIR coupler to be washed out of the photographic material upon processing and enhanced color saturation through interimage effects.
Abstract: Improved chemical sensitization is provided by a photographic silver halide emulsion chemically sensitized with water-soluble gold(I) compound represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein Z represents the substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen and carbon atoms necessary to complete a 5- or 6-member imide nucleus; and M is a cation. Such a chemically sensitized photographic silver halide emulsion is useful in a photographic silver halide element and process.
Abstract: A photographic silver halide material is chemically sensitized with a soluble gold(I) compound of the formula:AuL.sub.2.sup.+ X.sup.- or AuL(L.sup.1).sup.+ X.sup.-wherein L is a mesoionic compound; X is an anion; and L.sup.1 is a Lewis donor ligand. The novel gold(I) compounds possess properties which are advantageous compared to the properties of previously known gold compounds.
Abstract: Photographic compound (A) capable of releasing a photographically useful group is represented by the formula: SOL-CAR-LINK-PUG wherein SOL is a water-solubilizing group; CAR is a carrier moiety that, upon reaction with oxidized developing agent, is capable of releasing LINK-PUG and capable of forming a compound that is washed out of the photographic element during photographic processing; LINK-PUG is in turn capable of releasing a photographically useful group (PUG) during photographic processing and LINK-PUG is represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein X, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and PUG are as defined in the application. The photographic compound (A) enables formation of easily removable compounds in photographic elements and processes that provide images having improved acutance.

Abstract: A novel blocked photographically useful compound comprises a new blocking group that (a) comprises two electrophilic groups, the least electrophilic of which is bonded directly or through a timing group to the photographically useful group (PUG) of the compound, (b) is capable of reacting with a dinucleophile reagent, and (c) has the two electrophilic groups separated from each other by a bond or unsubstituted or substituted atom that enables nucleophilic displacement to occur with release of PUG when the compound is reacted with a dinucleophile reagent. Such a blocked photographically useful compound is useful in a photographic material and process to provide increased stability and enable more rapid release of the photographically useful group upon reaction with a dinucleophile reagent.

Abstract: A combination in a color photographic silver halide element and process of at least one red-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer comprising a particular phenolic cyan dye-forming coupler with at least one green-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer comprising a particular pyrazolo[3,2-c]-s-triazole coupler and at least one blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer comprising a particular pivaloylacetanilide yellow dye-forming coupler enables improved color saturation of dye images, better relation of speed to grain characteristics and reduced unwanted spectral absorption of dye images formed. This combination is particularly useful in color photographic silver halide materials and processes for forming improved reversal dye images.

Abstract: A method of retouching a dye image comprises selective removal with an aqueous acidic organic solvent solution, as described in the application, of a portion of a dye image from an exposed and processed photographic silver halide element comprising a support bearing a dye image from a dye-forming coupler and a primary amine photographic color developing agent, wherein the dye-forming coupler: (a) contains no ionizable group that is retained as part of a dye formed upon oxidative coupling, (b) has a structure such that the Log P of the coupler is greater than 4 and is derived from a four-equivalent coupler that has a Log P less than 8, and (c) has a coupling reactivity that enables formation of maximum image density of at least 0.6. The method comprises the step of contacting the dye image with an aqueous acidic organic solvent solution, as described in the application, for a time and at a temperature sufficient to selectively dissolve and remove a portion of the dye image from the photographic element.

Abstract: A non-diffusible, yellow dye image-forming benzoylacetanilide coupler having an aryloxy coupling-off group where (a) the benzoyl group comprises a substituent R.sup.1 O-- wherein R.sup.1 is an alicyclic or aliphatic, unsubstituted or substituted, branched or unbranched hydrocarbon group; and, (b) at least one of the benzoyl group and acetanilide group comprise a substituent that comprises a branched alkyl group containing at least 4 carbon atoms wherein the alkyl chains are uninterrupted or interrupted by hetero atoms or groups, enables improved solubility in coupler solvents in a photographic material, and the yellow dyes resulting from such couplers upon oxidative coupling have improved light stability. Such couplers are advantageous in photographic silver halide elements and processes.

Abstract: A photographic silver bromoiodide emulsion comprises a dispersing medium and a silver bromoiodide that (a) is monodispersed, cubic grain silver bromoiodide; (b) has a grain size within the range of 0.1 to 0.7 micron; (c) contains 1 to 7 mole percent iodide; and, (d) is prepared by a process comprising (i) forming the silver bromoiodide grains by mixing, in the presence of a thioether ripening agent, silver salt and alkali metal bromide and iodide salts until 60 to 90% of the silver salts have been added; then, (ii) carrying out the remainder of the silver bromoiodide grain formation with the addition of silver salt and alkali metal bromide and iodide salts that are no more than 1 mole percent iodide; wherein the resulting silver bromoiodide grains have no discernible shell as analyzed by x-ray diffraction. Such photographic silver bromoiodide emulsions are useful in photographic silver halide materials to provide longer exposure latitude.
