Patent number: 4515680Abstract: A process is disclosed for increasing the volume of lubricating oil base stocks recovered from a crude oil. A fraction having an atmospheric boiling range of about 675.degree. to 1100.degree. F. is recovered by vacuum distillation. This fraction is treated with furfural to extract a hydrocarbon mixture containing at least 50 volume % aromatic hydrocarbons. The raffinate is a lubricating oil base stock very high in paraffinic hydrocarbons and low in naphthenic hydrocarbons. The fraction extracted by the furfural contains at least about 50 volume % aromatic hydrocarbons and less than about 10 volume % paraffinic hydrocarbons. The mixture is hydrotreated to hydrogenate a substantial portion of the aromatic hydrocarbons. The hydrotreated product then is catalytically dewaxed. After removal of low boiling components, the finished lubricating oil base stock has a viscosity of at least about 200 SUS at 100.degree. F., a pour point of less than 20.degree. F.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1983Date of Patent: May 7, 1985Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.Inventors: William P. Hettinger, Jr., Frank H. Turrill, George J. Rozman, H. Wayne Beck

Patent number: 4497789Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved pitch for making readily stabilizable, substantially nonmesophasic carbon fibers. The pitch has a softening point of about 250.degree. C. (480.degree. F.) or above and is produced from an unoxidized thermal petroleum pitch by selectively reducing or eliminating a portion of the low molecular weight materials in a very short period of time so that the tendency to produce mesophase pitch is eliminated or reduced and so that the chemical integrity of the components of the higher molecular weight fractions is preserved as much as possible. Also disclosed is a method of producing carbon fibers therefrom and rovings or mats from such fibers.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1982Date of Patent: February 5, 1985Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.Inventors: William R. Sawran, Frank H. Turrill, John W. Newman, Norman W. Hall

Patent number: 4463598Abstract: A capillary bridge viscometer is disclosed for measuring the relative viscosity of a solute in a solvent. The bridge contains two (2) fluid flow circuits. One circuit contains two (2) capillaries in series. The second circuit contains two (2) capillaries in series with a valve and an associated liquid reservoir positioned intermediate of the capillaries. A common feed line feeds a first liquid to both fluid flow circuits. With the valve set in one operating position, the first liquid flows through all four (4) capillaries and no pressure differential is established across the bridge. With the valve set in a second operating position, the first liquid exiting the first capillary of the second fluid flow circuit flows into the liquid reservoir and displaces a second liquid stored therein which then flows through the second capillary of the second fluid flow circuit. A differential pressure is established across the bridge which is a function of the viscosity of the second liquid.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1982Date of Patent: August 7, 1984Inventor: Max A. Patent number: 4450241Abstract: A process is disclosed for the conversion of high boiling oil feeds having a significant level of Conradson carbon components and metals to form lighter oil products by contacting the feed under catalytic conversion conditions with a catalyst containing one of a select group of metal additives to catalyze the endothermic removal of carbon with CO.sub.2. Conversion conditions are such that hydrocarbonaceous material and metals are deposited to deactivate the catalyst in the conversion zone. Deactivated catalyst is partially regenerated in the presence of carbon dioxide containing gas before or after oxygen regeneration at a temperature below 1600.degree. F. to provide a regenerated catalyst which is recycled to the conversion zone for further contact with fresh feed. The metal additive is present on the catalyst in an amount sufficient to catalyze the endothermic removal of carbonaceous material in the presence of a carbon dioxide rich gas at regeneration temperature below 1500.degree. Patent number: 4385840Abstract: Apparatus is provided for blending batches of particulate material that are compositionally heterogeneous into batches of material that are compositionally uniform. The apparatus consists of two vertically aligned cylindrical mixers, including means to transfer product from the first mixer to the second mixer. Each mixer contains six or more vertically aligned partition walls that extend radially from the midpoint of the mixer to the wall to divide the mixer into at least six storage compartments of substantially equal volumetric capacity. The vertical partition walls differ in height in a regular descending order so that as material is charged to and fills one compartment, it overflows the shorter wall to fill the adjacent compartment.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1981Date of Patent: May 31, 1983Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventor: Peter M. Patent number: 4374788Abstract: Fibrils prepared by a differential temperature precipitation process of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,013,751 are refined in isopropanol at a subambient temperature not higher than about 10.degree. C., and subsequently are treated with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol to sorb at least 1.0 weight % of polyvinyl alcohol on the fibrils. The treated fibrils, as compared with fibrils prepared by prior art processes disperse more readily in aqueous media and provide water-laid sheets having greater strength. The fibrils preferably are prepared from an olefin polymer having a weight average molecular weight of at least one (1) million.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1979Date of Patent: February 22, 1983Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventor: William H. Patent number: 4360044Abstract: Apparatus is provided for blending large batches of particulate polymers that are compositionally heterogeneous into batches that are compositionally uniform. The apparatus consists of a plurality of horizontally aligned cylindrical storage bins, a common feed line for feeding particulate polymer to each of the storage bins, and conveying means running under each of the storage bins to receive particulate polymer discharged from the bins. Each bin contains six or more vertically aligned partition walls that extend radially from the midpoint of the bin to the wall to divide the bin into at least six storage compartments of substantially equal volumetric capacity. The vertical partition walls differ in height in a regular descending order so that as material is charged to and fills one compartment, it overflows the shorter wall to fill the adjacent compartment. Upon being discharged from the bin, the contents of the several compartments of the bin are mixed to provide a more homogeneous batch of particles.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1981Date of Patent: November 23, 1982Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventor: Peter M.
