Abstract: Lubricating oil adapted for use in diesel engines containing a sulfurized fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alkanol, e.g. sorbitan mono-ester of sulfurized oleic acid.
Abstract: Exhaust hydrocarbon emissions of an internal combustion engine being operating on gasoline containing a cyclopentadienyl manganese antiknock are reduced by the addition of a dimer or a trimer acid or mixture of a dimer and a trimer acid produced by the polymerization or condensation of an unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having between 16 and 18 carbon atoms per molecule to the gasoline.
Abstract: A process for making a low viscosity, low volatility .alpha.-olefin oligomer suitable for use as a functional fluid or lubricating oil comprising dimerizing a C.sub.6-12 .alpha.-olefin, reacting the resultant dimer with a C.sub.6-18 .alpha.-olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, distilling out volatile components and hydrogenating the residual product.

Abstract: The title compound can be made by reacting ethylene glycol with hexabromo-p-xylene in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. The compound is useful as a fire retardant for plastics, and can be used to form a polyester of the linear type. Fibers made from such polyesters are useful for making fire retardant textiles, carpets, drapes, and garments.

Abstract: Lubricating oils for internal combustion engine containing a minor amount of a combination of(A) an oil soluble basic organic nitrogen compound having a total base number of at least 300 and a pH of at least 9.5, and(B) an alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid containing 10-50 carbon atoms have improved corrosion properties.
Abstract: Ethylene/C.sub.3-12 .alpha.-monoolefin copolymers having an average molecular weight of about 10,000-1,000,000 containing about 1-10 pendent amide and/or ester groups per each 10,000 molecular weight are effective ashless dispersants and impart viscosity lift to lubricating oils. They are made by the permanganate oxidation of ethylene/C.sub.3-12 .alpha.-monoolefin/non-conjugated diene terpolymers which oxidizes the residual olefinic double bond of the diene unit to a carboxylic acid which is amidated and/or esterified.
Abstract: Lubricating oils having improved antioxidant and antiwear properties are obtained by adding a minor amount of a reaction product made by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon containing about 6-18 carbon atoms and about 1-3 olefinic double bonds concurrently with sulfur and hydrogen sulfide to obtain a reaction intermediate and reacting this intermediate with additional olefin hydrocarbon which may be the same or different. Preferred olefinic hydrocarbons are dicyclopentadiene and alloocimene.

Abstract: New compounds are derived from intra-molecular and inter-molecular, in the case of a polymer, sulphur bridged hydrocarbon rings of 12 carbon atoms. The hydrocarbon ring is preferably 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene. The compound also contains the residue of a dithiophosphoric acid containing two organic moieties. The new compounds are useful in major or minor amounts in lubricating oil compositions. The lubricating oil may be a hydraulic oil. The composition may also contain other conventional lubricant additives.
Abstract: New compounds are derived from intramolecular and intermolecular, in the case of a polymer, sulfur-bridged hydrocarbon rings containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms. The hydrocarbon ring is preferably derived from 1,5-cyclooctadiene. The compounds also contain the residue of an alkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl xanthate and may also contain the residue of a further nucleophilic group. The new compounds are useful in lubricating oil compositions. The compositions may also contain other conventional lubricant additives.
Abstract: An ignition spark advance system for use with spark ignited internal combustion engines having an exhaust gas recycle system which includes EGR vacuum modulator means connected to and modulating an exhaust gas recycle valve. A conventional first vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to manifold vacuum signal cooperates with a second vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to EGR vacuum signal to advance the ignition spark. The second vacuum actuated spark advance unit provides additional spark advance during periods of lower intake manifold vacuum caused by exhaust gas recycle when the spark advance due to the first unit decreases.

Abstract: Iodine is recovered from an aqueous solution containing iodide such as underground brine by repeated cycles of (1) passing the brine through a basic anion exchange resin to adsorb iodide, and (2) oxidizing adsorbed iodide to iodine by passing an acidified aqueous iodate solution (e.g., NaIO.sub.3) through the resin. The cycle is repeated many times until the resin is iodine-loaded. Iodine is then eluted from the resin, for example, with aqueous NaOH and recovered from the eluate by conventional means.
Abstract: Aromatic amines (e.g., aniline) are selectively alkylated in an ortho nuclear position by reaction with an olefin (e.g., ethylene) in the presence of an aluminum anilide catalyst. Hydrogen halides (e.g., HCl) are added to increase the reaction rate.
Abstract: Polyesters suitable for use as lubricant additives are prepared by reacting a di-carboxylic acid or anhydride having a branched chain alkyl or alkenyl substituent containing at least 30 carbon atoms with a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 are specified substituents which between them possess from 2 to 6 free hydroxyl groups. Lubricating compositions containing these polyester additives are also described.

Abstract: Mono-alkenes, aliphatic conjugated dienes and unsaturated fatty acids or esters thereof copolymerize with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to yield a copolymer containing carboxylic acid or ester groups which are reacted with a polyamine to amidate the carboxyl group leaving free amine groups. The free amine groups are reacted with polycarboxylic acids to form inter- and intra-molecular bridged polyamides. These compounds are effective ashless dispersants in lubricating oil and have detergency properties in distillate fuels.
