Patent number: 4234086Abstract: The disclosure concerns a flat, flexible strip of plastic bags for receiving soiled surgical sponges. Each bag has a transparent front panel and a transparent or opaque rear panel joined by three connections, the first of which is located in the central, lower region of the bag, and is easily rupturable. The other two connections are located in the upper region of the bag intermediate the sides and the center and may be easily rupturable. The central connection, when intact, enables the bag to receive and segregate two sponges, and coacts with the other connections to limit gaping of the bag mouth. When the central connection is broken, the bag is enabled to receive a single, large sponge, and the two upper connections limit gaping.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1979Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Inventor: Howard E. Patent number: 4231384Abstract: The disclosure concerns apparatus for draining coolant from the liquid cooling system of a locomotive. The apparatus includes an automatic control which is armed upon shut-down of the engine and drains the cooling system upon the occurrence of freezing temperature conditions. The apparatus must be reset manually, and this requires two distinct manipulations, one of which effects override of the automatic control. Such override action is limited in duration to prevent inadvertent, prolonged disabling of the automatic control. The drain valve is a pilot operated, rotary plug valve. Preferably, the apparatus includes provisions for manually draining the cooling system, for effecting automatic draining by the combined effects of gravity and compressed air, and for providing visual indications of its operating state. Moreover, as far as practical, it is desirable to package the components in a unitary assembly which can be replaced easily and bench serviced and tested.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1978Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Inventor: Fredrich M. Patent number: 4149759Abstract: The disclosure concerns a radial bearing arrangement for a large diameter rotor wherein the rotor carries an annular surface in a peripheral region spaced radially from the axis which cooperates with a series of bearing devices mounted in a foundation. The bearing devices provide reactions in a limited number of main supporting directions and act collectively to restrain the rotor against movement in all radial directions. Not more than two of the bearing devices provide positive, non-yielding restraint in those main directions, whereas the other bearing devices have radially displaceable bearing shoes and furnish yielding holding forces. The arrangement may include one type of yielding bearing device which furnishes a reaction which varies with displacement and affords a centering action, and/or a second type which furnishes a constant reaction during slow displacements and an increased reaction during rapid displacement, and thus affords damping action.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1976Date of Patent: April 17, 1979Assignee: Escher Wyss LimitedInventor: Helmut Miller

Patent number: 4146476Abstract: In a peeling centrifuge comprising a rotatable centrifuging drum which is surrounded by a stationary filtrate collection chamber having an outlet, and wherein the drum perforations communicate directly with that chamber, regeneration of the filter bed is effected while the drum rotates by throttling said outlet and introducing liquid to the chamber, so that liquid accumulates in the chamber and penetrates, at any instant, at least a portion of the filter bed. In one embodiment, wherein the drum axis is horizontal, only a sector of the bed in the lower region of the drum is penetrated at any time, and regeneration of the entire bed is accomplished sequentially as the drum rotates. In other embodiments, the chamber is allowed to fill with regenerating liquid to such extent that the entire bed is penetrated simultaneously. The regeneration technique may be carried out either in the terminal phase of a centrifuging operation, or after completion of centrifuging and peeling of the accumulated solids cake.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1978Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: Escher Wyss LimitedInventor: Leonhard Spiewok
