  • Patent number: 5779005
Abstract: A system for lubricating bearings on a vertical rotatable shaft within a bearing housing, is comprised of an annular lower lubricant sump at a lower portion of the bearing housing; an annular upper lubricant reservoir at an upper portion of the bearing housing; and a conduit providing fluid communication between the lower lubricant sump and the upper lubricant reservoir. Provision is made for metering a flow of lubricant from the upper lubricant reservoir into upper bearings. The lubricant is pumped from the lower lubricant sump, through the conduit, to the upper lubricant reservoir at a rate exceeding the rate of metered flow into the upper bearings. A constant head of lubricant above the metering orifice is provided in the upper lubricant reservoir, as well as an outlet for shunting excess lubricant back to the lower lubricant sump.

  • Patent number: 5769472
Abstract: A drive-in housing for mounting a latch assembly in a bore formed in a door comprises two identical housing parts each having a slot therein. When the housing parts are brought together they form an opening for receiving a bolt casing of the latch assembly. Tabs on the casing are captured in the slots as the housing parts are moved normal to the axis of the casing. Movement of the casing relative to the housing parts is then limited by direct engagement of the housing parts with the tabs. The housing parts each have two abutment surfaces facing in a circumferential direction, the abutment surfaces of one housing part having a projection and a recess, respectively, for mating with a corresponding recess and projection on the abutment surfaces of the other housing part. The housing parts, when brought together, form a faceplate having an opening therein for accommodating a bolt.

  • Patent number: 5718468
Abstract: A modular return spring cage assembly for door lock handles, consists of a door lock mounting chassis member having two opposed faces, at least one face having two opposed arcuate channels forming a circular groove in the face. The groove has two split diametrically opposed spring bases each formed by two substantially equal spring stops projecting from radially outer and radially inner walls of the groove. Two compression springs are slidably disposed within the channels and have length such that a slight compression is required to fit the springs between the split spring bases. An arrangement for transmitting torsional motion between a door handle and the springs, and for limiting rotary motion of the handle is included. A provision for positively retaining the springs and the torsional motion transmission arrangement on the mounting chassis member completes the modular assembly.

  • Patent number: 5718131
Abstract: A steering column locking assembly and method of making same includes swaging a steering column tube and a steering column lock collar in such a manner that relative movement between the two parts is resisted below a predetermined level of torque while relative rotation occurs at values of torque above the predetermined value. A layer of plastics material may be provided between the two parts. Once the predetermined torque is overcome, then rotation between the two parts occurs, but ceases once the torque level drops below the predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 5713245
Abstract: A steering column clamping mechanism has bolt links interconnecting substantially parallel spaced-apart plates which basically form a rectangle and are so linked one to another that the rectangle can assume an orientation defining a non-rectangular parallelogram or lozenge. One of the connecting bolts is mounted in a bracket fixed to a chassis of a vehicle, the bracket having a depending reaction plate against which an actuating member can be urged to push the plate member away from the reaction member. Through the linkage, this causes the other plate member to compress onto a steering column tube member to clamp it between that plate and the opposite side of the reaction plate.

  • Patent number: 5695227
Abstract: A lock platform for a door includes a face plate lying in a vertical plane parallel to the plane of the door and an outer peripheral edge margin which extends from the outer periphery of the face plate generally perpendicularly away from the face plate and towards the door when mounting the lock platform on the door. The edge margin engages the door in such a manner that the face plate is spaced from the door thereby creating a space between the face plate and the door for accommodating components of a handle and lock assembly. The lock platform further includes an outwardly facing hollow boss located on the face plate and spaced from the hole of the door when mounting the lock platform thereon. The boss defines a first opening for receiving a handle of the handle and lock assembly or the like therein. The lock platform also includes a second opening for receiving a key cylinder, thumb turn member or the like therein.

  • Patent number: 5690371
Abstract: A first platform having fingers rising therefrom is interengaged with a second, fusible platform in a spring latch assembly. The second holds the first at an angle in which the fingers avoid notches formed in the tail of the latch bolt. When the fusible platform melts due to excessive heat, the fingered platform assumes a normal horizontal disposition, and the fingers engage the notches in the tail to prevent the latch bolt from retracting.
