  • Patent number: 5569789
Abstract: A multistaged fixed catalyst bed process for the production of diisopropyl ether and isopropanol is disclosed comprising a fixed bed of serially connected stages containing zeolite Beta catalyst. A feedstream of propylene and water equivalents selected from the group consisting of water, isopropanol and diisopropyl ether is introduced into each stage at a rate sufficient to provide a mole ratio of water equivalents to propylene equivalents that increases in increments by stage from at least 0.1 in a first stage to at most 1.2 in a final stage. The feedstream is introduced at a temperature between 50.degree. and 450.degree. C., pressure between 700 and 24000 kPa, and weight hourly space velocity between 0.10 and 30, based on catalyst, whereby a single non-aqueous liquid phase is maintained in the fixed bed. An effluent product stream is recovered comprising diisopropyl ether, isopropanol and water from the final stage. Isopropanol is recycled to the first stage when the preferred product is diisopropyl ether.

  • Patent number: 5563314
Abstract: There is provided a process for the net catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes to produce alkenes. The process involves simultaneous equilibrium dehydrogenation of alkanes to alkenes and combustion of the hydrogen formed to drive the equilibrium dehydrogenation reaction further to the product alkenes. In the present reaction, the alkane feed is dehydrogenated over an equilbrium dehydrogenation catalyst in a first reactor, and the effluent from the first reactor is then passed into a second reactor containing a reducible metal oxide which serves to selectively combust hydrogen in an oxidation/reduction (REDOX) reaction. This particular mode of operation is termed a separate reactor, REDOX mode.

  • Patent number: 5560427
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fracturing and propping a fracture interval wherein a workstring is lowered into the wellbore and a fracturing slurry comprised of a fracturing fluid and proppants is flowed down the workstring to a downhole slurry splitter which separates a portion of the fracturing fluid from the slurry and delivers it to the bottom of the fracture interval to initiate and propagate a fracture in the interval. The remaining slurry including the proppants is at the same time delivered to the top of the interval to prop the fracture as it is being formed. Alternate flowpath(s) deliver fracturing fluid and/or slurry to different levels within the interval to by-pass any sand bridges which may be formed during the fracturing operation.

  • Patent number: 5554275
Abstract: A method and operating technique for treating organosulfur compound-containing aliphatic streams by introducing the light hydrocarbon stream at a top portion of a vertical stripping tower having an upper catalytic contact zone containing a bed of solid hydrodesulfurization catalyst particles and a lower contact zone, and introducing a light gas stream containing hydrogen at a lower portion of said stripping tower. Hydrodesulfurization is effected by flowing the light hydrocarbon stream and light gas stream countercurrently in contact with the solid hydrodesulfurization catalyst particles under hydrodesulfurization and stripping conditions, thereby converting the organosulfur compound in the upper contact zone.
