  • Patent number: 5536938
Abstract: A borehole logging tool having a pair of spaced-apart detectors records intensity signals representing the die-away of nuclear radiation in a subsurface formation. Weighted moments of the intensity signals as well as of a model are produced. Corresponding weighted intensity and model moments are equated and simultaneously solved to obtain values for a borehole decay constant, a formation decay constant, and a formation-to-borehole amplitude ratio for each of the pair of detectors. From these values a trained neural network produces intrinsic values of a formation macroscopic thermal neutron absorption cross section, a formation porosity, and a borehole fluid cross section. A log is generated of these intrinsic values versus depth as the logging tool traverses the borehole.

  • Patent number: 5536391
Abstract: This invention discloses an enhanced process for the hydroprocessing of a feed, the feed comprising a highly aromatic refinery distillate stream boiling in the range between 300.degree. and 900.degree. F. The feed is separated into light and heavy streams such that the light stream contains from 0.1 to 5 wt. % dibenzothiophene, substituted dibenzothiophenes, and heavier polycyclic thiophenes. The lighter stream is hydrotreated at pressures from 300.degree. to 1000.degree. F. with a commercial catalyst having a hydrogenation component. The heavier stream is treated in the presence of hydrogen at higher pressure, from 600 to 2000 psig with a catalyst comprising active material having a Constraint Index of less than 2 in addition to a hydrogenation component in order to achieve over 35% conversion of material boiling above 630.degree. F. The active material of the catalyst is a highly siliceous zeolite or an acidic amorphous silica-alumina material.

  • Patent number: 5531272
Abstract: A method for zone isolation or replacing a damaged or corroded casing with a solid plastic is described herein. A resin/curing agent mixture sufficient to form a hardened plastic or solid, underwater and/or at low wellbore temperatures that is also able to withstand downhole stresses, is placed into the wellbore so as to bind with the undamaged casing and close off any thief zone. Subsequently, the resin/curing agent mixture forms a hardened solid. The hardened solid is milled out if necessary so as to form a resinous casing the size of the original casing. Later, the hardened resinous casing is perforated to communicate with a targeted zone. Perforation is not required when isolating a zone. The hardened solid is of a strength sufficient to withstand stresses generated during EOR operations such as carbon dioxide or steam-flooding. Said solid is also resistant to workover acids and other chemicals used in EOR operations.

  • Patent number: 5530171
Abstract: There is provided a process for the net catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes to produce alkenes. The process involves simultaneous equilibrium dehydrogenation of alkanes to alkenes and combustion of the hydrogen formed to drive the equilibrium dehydrogenation reaction further to the product alkenes. In the present reaction, the alkane feed is passed into a reactor containing both an equilibrium dehydrogenation catalyst and a reducible metal oxide, whereby the alkane is dehydrogenated and the hydrogen produced is simultaneously and selectively combusted in oxidation/ reduction (REDOX) reaction with the reducible metal oxide. This particular mode of operation is termed a same reactor, REDOX mode. The equilibrium dehydrogenation catalyst may comprise platinum and the reducible metal oxide may contain bismuth, antimony, indium, or molybdenum, or a mixture thereof.

  • Patent number: 5527979
Abstract: There is provided a process for the net catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes to produce alkenes. The process involves simultaneous equilibrium dehydrogenation of alkanes to alkenes and combustion of the hydrogen formed to drive the equilibrium dehydrogenation reaction further to the product alkenes. In the present reaction, the alkane feed is dehydrogenated over an equilbrium dehydrogenation catalyst in a first reactor, and the effluent from the first reactor, along with oxygen, is then passed into a second reactor containing a metal oxide catalyst which serves to selectively catalyze the combustion of hydrogen. This particular mode of operation is termed a separate reactor, cofed oxygen mode. The equilibrium dehydrogenation catalyst may comprise platinum and the selective metal oxide combustion catalyst may contain bismuth, antimony, indium, molybdenum, or a mixture thereof.
