  • Patent number: 6747964
Abstract: In a wireless communication system a method for high data rate transmission aggregates information signals processed by at least two modems, wherein the modulated information signals are transmitted using two carrier frequencies. The method provides multiple data transmissions concurrently over a broad bandwidth consistent with single transmission air-interface standards. An apparatus, mobile unit, includes a multi-link (ML) protocol processor that aggregates the information signals from the modems into a point-to-point protocol (PPP) format for interface with conventional data-based systems, such as the internet. The ML processor further receives an aggregated bundle and separates the bundle into its constituent parts for modulation by the modems.

  • Patent number: 6744882
Abstract: The mobile telephone is provided with the capability for automatically adjusting the gain of a microphone of the telephone based upon the detected noise level in which the cellular telephone is operated. As the noise level increases, the gain of the microphone is automatically decreased, thereby compensating for the natural tendency of telephone users to speak more loudly in noisy environments. Also, by decreasing the microphone gain, any clipping that might otherwise occur as a result of the user speaking more loudly is avoided and the signal-to-noise ratio is not thereby decreased. Furthermore, because the microphone gain decreases, the volume level of the voice of the user as it is output from the other party's telephone is not unduly loud. Hence, the other party need not manually decrease the speaker gain of his or her telephone.

  • Patent number: 6741661
Abstract: A method and system that reduces the peak-to-average power ratio of a reverse link signal is described. A baseband structure implements a peak reduction technique using peak windowing. A non-rectangular window is used to distort the signal. One embodiment of the window is an inverted-raised cosine with the peak reduction a function of the relative difference in the squared-magnitude of the envelope relative to that of the desired peak-to-average power ratio. Multiple passes through the peak-reduction function may be performed until a desired target peak-to-average power ratio is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6637000
Abstract: A turbo code interleaver using linear congruential sequences may be employed as a two-dimensional interleaver in a turbo coder that also includes first and second constituent encoders. The interleaver and the first encoder are each configured to receive input bits. The first encoder produces output symbols therefrom. The interleaver receives the input bits sequentially by row. A linear congruential sequence recursion algorithm within the interleaver serves to pseudo-randomly rearrange, or shuffle, the bits within each row of the interleaver. The bits are then output from the interleaver sequentially by column. The second encoder is configured to receive the interleaved bits from the interleaver. The second encoder produces output symbols therefrom. The two streams of output symbols are multiplexed together, with appropriate puncturing. If desired, the linear congruential recursion sequence can be generated in reverse.

  • Patent number: 6574211
Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

  • Patent number: 6356601
Abstract: Techniques for detecting zero rate frames in a received data transmission. A modulated signal is received and demodulated in accordance with a particular demodulation format to generate demodulated symbols. The demodulated symbols are partitioned into a number of received frames. For each received frame, a quality metric is computed and compared against a threshold value. The threshold value is selected based, in part, on the quality metrics of received frames. Based on the comparison result, the received frame is indicated as being either transmitted and received in error (i.e., erased or bad) or not transmitted at all (i.e., zero rate or empty). The quality metric can relate to an energy of a received frame, a distance between a received frame and a codeword corresponding to the received frame, or other metrics.
