  • Patent number: 6782768
Abstract: An improved nozzle system for a flow cytometer and accompanying methods have been invented for a high efficiency orientation and sorting process of a flat sample and dedicates items such as equine or bovine sperm cells. This improved nozzle system comprises a nozzle with a novel interior surface geometry that can both gently accelerate the cells and can include an elliptical-like, single torsional interior surface element within the nozzle, i.e., a single torsional orientation nozzle. The elliptical-like, single torsional interior surface element may have a laminar flow surface and may produce the simplest flow path for applying minimal forces which act in either an accelerative nature or orienting hydrodynamic forces, namely, the single torsional orientation forces, to orient a flat sample such as animal sperm cells into a proper direction for an analyzing and efficiently sorting process in clinical use, for research and for the animal insemination industry.

  • Patent number: 6773921
Abstract: Indicia of stability or thresholds of instability may be used to assess the proximity of hydrocarbon materials such as petroleum residua to deposition of carbon rich materials. The invention may be used to evaluate suitability of such hydrocarbon materials to various types of processing methodologies, or to determine processing parameters, either prior to processing or during processing. Prediction of proximity to deposition of carbon rich materials may result in continuous process parameters or increased output, decreased energy use or decreased amount of emissions per unit of such hydrocarbon materials compared to conventional processing technology. • Patent number: 6746873
Abstract: A flow cytometry system is disclosed for oscillating the exterior of a flow cytometer nozzle. Oscillating the exterior of a flow cytometer nozzle at selected oscillations or a sweeping range of oscillations disintegrates particles and gas entrapped within the flow cytometer nozzle. Adherents absorbed to the exterior of the flow cytometer nozzle may also be removed. An energy source (1) serves to generate a selected oscillation or range of oscillations. The energy source (1) is connected to a flexible transfer element (2) which conducts the electrical signals to an oscillation system (3). The oscillation system (3) turns the electrical energy from the energy source (1) into mechanical oscillations and is connected to a portable device (4) which disintegrates particles, dislocates gas within the flow cytometer nozzle and cleans the exterior of the flow cytometer aperture.

  • Patent number: 6722969
Abstract: A precision micro taxidermy cutting instrument is provided which includes a single hold tailless frame member to which a pivotable body member is attached. The body member can provide a blade element which is concave and through which a lifting edge which cuts and a retention edge which cuts can both combine to provide a centering feature. This centering feature can be enhanced by blade body designs which also center through the use of an offset concave element. A chisel element can separate the hide from the viscera and through the selection of appropriate angles and the like, a continuous and precise cut can be made in taxidermy operations. The frame member can include a thumb rest as well as a rotational restraining element which are diametrically opposed and which can present roughly orthogonal forces. Flared separators can be included on the blade body member to further enhance the operation of the device.

  • Patent number: 6723839
Abstract: A novel ACC synthase gene in geranium PHSacc-25. PHSacc-25 was identified by amplifying isolated mRNA using polymerase chain reaction, the resulting cDNAs were cloned into a plasmid, positive clones were isolated, and the cDNA insert was partially sequenced. A portion of the DNA sequence encoding for the enzyme ACC synthase in geranium plants (specifically from Pelargonium hortorum cv Sincerity) was identified. The cDNA sequence corresponds to a gene which may be important in the control of ethylene production.

  • Patent number: 6708852
Abstract: A mechanically pressurized aerosol dispensing system comprising a cap which houses a piston, an actuator moveably attached to the cap, forming together with the cap a dispensing head assembly, and an expandable elastic reservoir. The system is fitted over a standard container holding a liquid product, and includes a dip tube assembly to draw liquid into the dispensing head assembly, where the contents are released through the dispensing head assembly, via the aerosol nozzle and valve. A twist of the threaded cap raises a piston, thereby opening a charging chamber within the dispensing head assembly. This creates a vacuum with the resulting suction pulling the product up through the dip tube to fill the charging chamber. Twisting the cap in the opposite direction lowers the piston in a downstroke which closes the charging chamber, forcing the product into the expandable elastic reservoir where it is then discharged through the nozzle.
