  • Patent number: 5001479
Abstract: A method and circuit arrangement is disclosed for converting Gray code signals into counting pulses, forming a counter status, detecting interference signals infringing the Gray code and for forming an error signal with a network defining a finite automaton according to Moore or Mealy, wherein the network forms no error signal when a Gray code infringement is followed by a second Gray code infringement. The disclosed network arrangement in one embodiment comprises a quadruple interpolator (quadrature decoder) for precision dimension measuring machines with optoelectronic scale scanning. Interruptions of the measuring procedure and errors are reduced by not generating an error signal when a Gray code infringement is followed by a second Gray code infringement.

  • Patent number: 5001664
Abstract: For dividing a dividend of a first plurality of m-ary digits by a divisor of a second plurality of m-ary digits to provide a certain number K of m-ary quotient digits, where m represents 2.sup.N, a shift register comprises a most significant part, first and second higher parts for the second plurality less one of m-ary digits and one m-ary digit, and a least significant stage and holds an instantaneous content which is used as a current content during a last part of a preceding one of two consecutive machine cycles and is first a concatenation of an m-ary zero digit and the dividend m-ary digits. A carry save adder tree calculates a set of zeroth to (m-1)-th algebraic sums of a part of the current content held in the most significant and the first and the second higher parts minus zero through (m-1) times the divisor, respectively, plus a carry from a previous machine cycle. The sums are used in deciding a partial quotient of one m-ary digit and a sum datum of the second plurality of m-ary digits.

  • Patent number: 4998518
Abstract: A swirl control system for a lean-burn engine, utilizing composite fuel blended with at least two different liquid fuels, comprises sensors for monitoring the operating state of the engine, a concentration meter for monitoring a mix proportion of one of the blended liquid fuels included in the composite fuel, and a control valve disposed in the vicinity of an intake port through which intake air is introduced via an intake air passage defined in an intake manifold of the engine into a combustion chamber of the engine. To vary a swirl mode of the swirl occurring in the combustion chamber, the swirl control valve is opened or closed by a controller on the basis of the present operating state of the engine and the mix proportion detected by the concentration meter.

  • Patent number: 4998999
Abstract: A steering column assembly includes a steering column having an upper steering column tube and a lower steering column tube which are telescopically connected at their lower and upper portions respectively, a stationary bracket fixed to a vehicle body and an energy absorption bracket fixed to the stationary bracket. The energy absorption bracket fixedly receives the upper steering column tube which extends therethrough. The energy absorption bracket gets plastically deformed in response to an impact load exceeding a predetermined value to allow the upper steering column tube to displace downward with respect to the lower steering column tube. The impact load is applied to the energy absorption bracket through the upper steering column tube in the direction along the axis of the steering column. The applied impact load is absorbed through the plastic deformation of the energy absorption bracket.

  • Patent number: 4999616
Abstract: The invention includes a device and a method for recognizing the instantaneous position of a plurality of mechanical parts, the parts being linearly and incrementally movable between a departure position and an arrival position. The device includes a plurality of radiation modifying tags respectively associated and movable with the mechanical parts. There are a plurality of pairs of radiation emitters and receivers located on the opposite sides of the parts at incremental positions, whereby the pressence of a tag between a given pair causes modification of the radiation received by an associated receiver. The device further provides for generating detect signals from the receivers, and for recognizing that corroborating detect signals from the receivers correspond to a specific set of positions of the mechanical parts.

  • Patent number: 4999292
Abstract: Bacteria that metabolize phenylacetate along a mandelate-to-cis,cis-muconate pathway are disclosed. Bacteria that express the pathway for metabolizing phenylacetate through a mandelate intermediate can be isolated reproducibly by first selecting bacteria that can utilize both L-phenylalanine and mandelate as the sole carbon source and then blocking alternate pathways for the degradation of L-phenylalanine. The activity of selected enzymes along the mandelate-to-cis,cis-muconate pathway can be blocked in these bacteria to effect the accumulation of selected intermediates.

  • Patent number: 4999560
Abstract: An electric motor running system consists of a photovoltaic array, an inverter for inverting output voltage of the photovoltaic array to AC voltage and automatically controlled so that the frequency is changed in accordance with the output voltage of the photovoltaic array, maintaining the ratio of the voltage to the frequency at a constant value, an induction motor operated by application of the AC voltage from the inverter, and a frequency increasing circuit for increasing the output frequency of the inverter instantaneously so that the motor produces the torque larger than the load starting torque when the motor is started and further decreasing the increased output frequency of the inverter to the normal running frequency after the increased output frequency is maintained for a predetermined period of time. This construction allows the motor to be smoothly started even where a load connected to the motor is a positive displacement pump which has a large static friction torque.

  • Patent number: 4998357
Abstract: The binocular telescope has in each barrel a focusing member (internal focusing) which is joined to a support guided on a guide rod. When a control knob is actuated, this support is displaced axially by means of a transmission bar. A driving pin, which engages into the focusing member, is integrally formed on the support for this purpose. A spring which interacts with the driving pin and acts upon the focusing member effects tilt-free guidance and prevents radial play, even with short guide lengths of the focusing member.

  • Patent number: 4999838
Abstract: When a peripheral control processor is put, in a data processing system, into a down state from a normal state of operation upon occurrence of a failure, a failure recovery informing arrangement comprises a failure occurrence signal producing circuit for delivering a failure occurrence signal to a diagnostic bus. Detecting the failure occurrence signal, a detecting circuit delivers a detection signal to a system bus. Responsive to the detection signal, a recovery command signal producing circuit delivers a recovery command signal back to the system bus rather than, through a specific hardware line, directly to the peripheral control processor. Instead of the specific hardware line, a processing circuit is used in processing the recovery command signal into a peripheral initializing signal and a recovery informing signal to supply them to the peripheral control processor through the diagnostic bus. The initializing signal is for turning the down state to the normal state.
