    Abstract: An apparatus and method contemplate the use of a downhole tool, at least one magnet, and a magnetic energy converter for generating electricity in a receiver positioned in a subsurface formation. The downhole tool is connected to a drilling or a logging assembly disposed in a wellbore. The magnet, which is attached to the downhole tool, generates a magnetic field extending into the formation. The magnetic energy converter, which is contained in the receiver located in the formation, is exposed to variations of the flux of the magnetic field generated by the magnet. These magnetic flux variations through the magnetic energy converter generate electricity in the receiver. The invention may be expressed in various embodiments that contemplate the use of pluralities of magnets arranged in different configurations.

    Abstract: A drilling motor includes a non-elastomeric stator and rotor which are dimensioned for negative or zero interference. The amount of negative interference between the rotor and the stator is determined by the largest solid particle expected to pass through the motor. The negative interference or gap between the rotor and the stator is preferably at least two times the greatest particle size. According to the invention, stators are made by machining or casting stainless steel and are fabricated in sections having lengths of 20 to 40 centimeters. The sections are indexed so that each section may be properly aligned with another. The sections are aligned and welded together to form a motor stator of conventional length.

    Abstract: A downhole tool and method are provided for collecting data from a subsurface formation during drilling operations. The tool includes a tubular mandrel adapted for axial connection in a drill string positioned in a wellbore penetrating the subsurface formation and a stabilizer element or sleeve positioned about the tubular mandrel for relative rotation between the stabilizer element and the tubular mandrel. A plurality of elongated ribs are connected to the stabilizer element. A means is connected to the stabilizer element for frictional engagement with a wall of the wellbore so as to prevent the stabilizer element from rotating relative to the wellbore wall. An actuator system is carried at least partially by the stabilizer element, and a probe is carried by one of the elongated ribs and adapted for movement by the actuator system between a retracted position within the one rib and an extended position engaging the wellbore wall such that the probe collects data from the formation.

    Abstract: A system is disclosed for generating and transmitting data signals to the surface of the earth while drilling a borehole, the system operating by generating pressure pulses in the drilling fluid filling the drill string. The system is designed to maximize signal strength while minimizing the probability of jamming by drilling fluid particulates. The system uses a rotary valve modulator consisting of a stator with flow orifices through which drilling fluid flows, and a rotor which rotates with respect to the stator thereby opening and restricting flow through the orifices and thereby generating pressure pulses. The flow orifices with the stator in a “closed” position are configured to reduce jamming, and to simultaneously minimize flow area in order to maximize signal strength. This is accomplished by imparting a shear to the fluid flow through the modulator, and minimizing the aspect ratio and maximizing the minimum principal dimension of the closed flow area.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method for improving the quality of a formation fluid sample by taking the sample at a time when the formation fluid composition contains the most favorable portion of hydrocarbons. This task is accomplished by determining in real-time, the composition of the fluid flowing into a downhole tool from the formation. This method determines the optical density of the fluid as the fluid flows through the tool. An optical spectrum is generated from the density measurement. The optical spectrum is compared to a composite spectrum generated from a database of known fluid samples. As a result of the comparisons, there is a determination of the derivations between corresponding features of the two spectra. Adjustments are made to the components of the composite spectrum until the deviations between the two spectra are at an acceptable minimum. Determinations of the fluid composition are made from the composition of the composite spectrum at the minimum deviation.

    Abstract: In this invention, drill pipe or tubing is attached to a sampling tool that is suspended in a borehole. A wireline cable also connects the tool to surface equipment and establishes electrical communication between the tool and the surface equipment. A valve located in the docking head assembly controls fluid flow between the borehole and the drill pipe through a port located within the drill pipe assembly which is opened and closed as required. During operations, the tool takes fluid samples from the formation and analyzes them for contamination levels. Unacceptable fluid is pumped or flowed through the tool via a flowline and into the drill pipe where it is stored until it is disposed of at the surface. Once the flowing fluid reaches acceptable levels of contamination, this fluid is pumped or flowed into a sample chamber(s) in the tool.

Preferably, the location of the data sensor in the subsurface formation is identified prior to the installation of the antenna, so that the opening in the casing can be created proximate the data sensor.

    Abstract: A flow-control apparatus enables the taking of representative formation samples at sampling rates less than 10 cc/sec in typical high pressure wells, e.g., to 20,000 psi. Throttle valves are used to control pressure drawdown in the flowline and to continue that pressure control until captured in a sample chamber. Very low flow rates at high pressures are made possible by using a motor-driven, variable orifice, needle valve (throttle valve) and a downhole feedback loop on the piston position. The flow control device uses metered fluid, which is internally contained oil, which overcomes the difficulty of trying to meter "dirty" (particle laden) well fluids or dual phase gas-liquid fluids. A single probe module (or a dual packer) is coupled with a multi-sample module and the flow control module. This combination can then be used to draw a sample from the formation at a very low flowrate and, hence, a very low pressure differential which keeps the sample pressure above the bubble point (or dew point).

    Abstract: When drilling a borehole for an oil well it is desirable to know when fluid is passing through the walls of the borehole between the borehole itself and the formation through which the borehole is passing. It has now been discovered that useful information about the influx or efflux of fluid can be gained by observing the pressure within the borehole in the region of the drilling bit, this observation being carried out not when the drill is actually operating but when it is still (and the pipe string to which it is mounted is also still) and the drilling fluid is not being pumped; the basis for this is that the drilling fluid is thixotropic, and when not disturbed will form a gel which is capable of quite accurately transmitting the force created by moving fluids at the interface between the borehole and the earth formation being drilled through--that is inflowing or outflowing fluids--displacing the drilling fluid along the borehole, and with an efficiency far greater than previously recognized.
