Abstract: A portable computer adapted for electrical connection to a docking station having multiple power modes of operation is described. The portable computer has one or more CPU chips which have at least two power modes of operation, a low power mode and a high power mode. When the portable computer is operated as a stand-alone computer, it operates in the low power mode. When the portable computer is operated while electrically connected to the docking station, it operates in a high power mode. The docking station has greater cooling capacity than the portable computer alone to provide enhanced cooling of the high power mode of operation.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a modular heat dissipating device that consists of a plurality of sheet and beam members which are connected together by heat pipes. The sheet or support fin member is constructed by folding a piece of heat conducting material which is then mounted on a beam member. There are individual compliant interfaces built into the fin members such that a good thermal contact can be ensured with the heat generating semiconductor devices. The modular heat dissipating devices can be stacked up to gain higher cooling capacity or spread around to cover multiple chips on a printed-wiring board.

Abstract: The present invention related to an improved structure of an optically transparent element that can be used in optical scanners, supermarket scanners, lenses for eyeglasses, etc. The application of oxynitride PECVD films provide good hardness and optical transparency. Such films displaying these physical properties are extremely useful as a scratch resistant coatings in lenses and systems in which an article contacts a transparent surface, such as in scanners and in environments in which intermittent, environmental contact occurs such as in displays for computers and suchlike and in liquid crystal displays, touch displays and compact disks.

Abstract: Method and device for setting basic means of access for operation of electronically operated devices (12), with the aid of a possibly transferable personal authentication system (16), essentially based on three components used in the course of the method in accordance with the invention; namely additional device hardware functions permitting means of access, namely in particular for custom configuration and shutdown of the devices; a hardware-oriented interface to a reader device (18) for the authentication system (16) such as a SmartCard reader permitting access to the functions by a SmartCard (16); and the authentication system (16) itself, capable of directly accessing the configuration and/or shutdown/startup/restart functions of the device hardware by way of the defined interface. Legitimization for configuration/shutdown and startup/restart of the devices is provided by matching of keys stored on the SmartCard (16) and in a ROM (14) in the device (12).

Abstract: A double tang articulating hub assembly used in combination with a collapsible self-supporting structure. The double tang articulating hub assembly is used as a connector among tubular rod elements which together provide a generally tubular frame matrix used to erect a collapsible self-supporting prefabricated deployable structure where a clear span interior without supporting columns is required. The hub employs a plurality of one piece “forked plugs” each containing a cylindrical plug with two tangs and an integral post connecting the tangs allowing the forked plug to rotate.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a patterned thin film on a surface of a substrate having thereon a patterned underlayer of a self-assembled monolayer. The method comprises depositing a thin film material on the self-assembled monolayer to produce a patterned thin film on the surface of the substrate. The present invention further provides processes for preparing the self-assembled monolayer. The present invention still further provides solution-based deposition processes, such as spin-coating and immersion-coating, to deposit a thin film material on the self-assembled monolayer to produce a patterned thin film on the surface of the substrate.

Abstract: Electrically conducting adhesives having a broader selectable range of properties are provided by having random sizes of micrometer diameter range particles coated with a low melting temperature metal. The coated particles are suspended in a vehicle of a mixture of thermosetting resins together with a flux resin selected for viscosity and low shrinkage, for screen printability, for electrical and for mechanical properties over a broad range of specification conditions. The vehicle or resin system includes thermosetting cyclo-aliphatic epoxy, thermosetting phenoxy polymer and thermosetting mono-functional limonene oxide. The low temperature melting coating system for the particles includes In, Sn, and alloys such as In—Sn, Sn—Pb, Bi—Sn—In and InAg. The micrometer diameter range particles includes Cu, Ni, Co, Ag, Pd, Pt, polymer and ceramic.
