  • Patent number: 4383524
Abstract: A traction aid for lowering the shoulders during lateral cervical spine radiographic procedures. The device employs a pair of wrist cuffs joined by an adjustable loop which extends around the underside of the feet of a supine patient. Straightening the knees and extending the feet tensions the patient's arms and depresses his shoulders allowing improved exposure of the sixth and seventh vertebrae to lateral X-ray procedures. In an alternate embodiment a pair of shoulder straps encircle the patient's shoulders and are joined by the leg straps to depress the shoulders by direct pressure on the shoulders. The mechanical interaction between the straps and the straightening of the legs and feet produces the required depression. The method of this invention involves the use of such a traction device and the patient's voluntary or the doctor's manual straightening of the legs with minimum exposure to the radiation field.

  • Patent number: 4378883
Abstract: An improved bicycle transport container comprising a pair of hinged sides including an interior configured to hold a bicycle with minimum of unused interior which is space. The hinged sides contain matching openings therethrough which coincide with the position of the frame opening in a conventional bicycle whereby the container when closed and either containing a bicycle or not may be easily transported by hand or over the shoulder using the opening as the point of grip or support. The container is preferably formed of two unitary sides of vacuum formed plastic resin sheet material and may be lined with padding material to cushion the container. Optionally, the container may include additional openings or fasteners on one or both sides of the container to engage support hangers for storage of the container and bicycle or for transportation as on a rear bumper carrier of a vehicle. The entire container may be of a unitary member employing an integral hinge between the sides.

  • Patent number: 4374515
Abstract: A combustion air system for fireplaces capable of introducing outside air to the firebox of a fireplace in a position for efficient distribution within the firebox. The system includes both manual and thermostatic operation for controlling the quantity of combustion air reaching the firebox. The system employs the existing ash trap as the source of combustion air thereby allowing the installation of this improved combustion air system without structural modification of the firebox and without interference with the normal use of the ash trap. The system includes a domed chamber which is substituted for the ash trap door and a draft controlling damper for controlling the quantity of combustion air. The damper is controlled by a manual push rod extending from the exterior of the fireplace to the firebox and engages the same damper.

  • Patent number: 4363476
Abstract: A hand tool adapter for bench operation comprising a frame including a cradle adapted to receive one handle of a two-handle hand operated tool. The adapter includes apparatus for securing the handle in place in relatively fixed relationship with the base. An actuator arm is coupled via a linkage to the base and includes a receiver for the other handle of the hand operated tool. The base positions the jaws or working portion of the hand tool to the front of the base available for clearer visibility by the operator. The linkage provides mechanical advantage for the operator to minimize and tend to standardize the force required for actuation of the hand tool. The handle of the apparatus is dimensioned and positioned to provide a clearly defined range of movement from unoperated to operated positions. An adjustable stop limits travel of the operating handle.
