  • Patent number: 5907157
Abstract: A method and apparatus for preparing a specimen adapted for electron microscopy comprises an evacuated specimen-processing chamber. A specimen having a surface to be processed is placed inside the processing chamber A beam-blocking member is placed close to the processed surface so as to block a part of an etching beam A first etching step is performed by directing the beam at the specimen via the blocking member. Then, the specimen and the blocking member are moved relative to each other. Finally, a second etching step is performed by directing the beam at the specimen via the blocking member. As a result, the specimen becomes a thin film and it can be observed with the electron microscope.

  • Patent number: 5902342
Abstract: An electric powered vehicle includes a traction motor powered from a source of switched DC power. The motor includes a tachometer for measuring the rotational velocity of the motor and for providing a tachometer signal indicative thereof. A low pass filter low pass filters the tachometer signal and produces a reference tachometer signal. A summing circuit combines the tachometer signal and the reference tachometer signal to produce a deviation signal. The deviation signal is provided to a signal processing circuit which includes a comparator and a reference value generator. • Patent number: 5900628
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of extracting information about the mass of a substance from a complex mass spectrum containing peaks arising from polyvalent ions. These polyvalent ions possess electric charges which are integral multiples of the elementary electric charge. Ions including these polyvalent ions are detected, and a mass spectrum is obtained. On the mass spectrum, ion intensity I is represented as a function of a variable x corresponding to mass-to-charge ratio. The mass spectrum, given by I(x), is transformed into a mass spectrum I(t) of a variable t, using the relation t=1/(x-H), where H is a unit mass of ions added to the polyvalent ions. Peaks appear on the mass spectrum I(t). Among these peaks, at least a given number of peaks appear at regular intervals. The spacing between these regularly spaced peaks is found.

  • Patent number: 5900778
Abstract: A high power amplifier system includes an on-line adaptive predistorter for generating predistorted complex data signals to a high power amplifier in response to receiving incoming complex data signals from a remote source. The predistorted complex data signals enable the high powered amplifier to output signals corresponding to the incoming complex data signals. The amplifier system includes an off-line adaptive predistorter which has an adaptive parametric forward filter for combining predistorted complex data signals and demodulated complex data signals, produced from the output of the high power amplifier, to produce an optimized forward amplitude filter that emulates the forward amplitude response of the amplifier, and an optimized inverse phase filter that emulates the inverse phase response of the amplifier.

  • Patent number: 5900027
Abstract: In order to make processes for finishing animal hides or pelts less labor-intensive and more environmentally compatible, a process is proposed in which, following a conventionally conducted soak, the animal hides or pelts are treated with a conventional tanning solution in which carbon dioxide has been dissolved under pressure. This makes it possible to reduce considerably the period of time usually required for the production of leather or pelts, since the treatment period is reduced markedly. Furthermore, it is possible in this way to combine conventional treatment steps and to conduct them in only one single treatment step. Instead of the 20 to 40 t of waste water per tonne of leather or pelt which are customary with conventional processes, only about 2 t of waste water per tonne of leather or pelt are now produced.

  • Patent number: 5896907
Abstract: A rolling fire door includes a door hold-open/release system that includes an electromagnet which is energized by a controller when the door is in the open position. The energized electromagnet magnetically attracts a bottom bar of the rolling door to secure the door in the open position. A key control station connected to the controller enables the electromagnet to be energized when the door is in the open position and enables the controller to deenergize the electromagnet so that the weight of the door causes the door to close. The key control station also includes a test switch which enables the controller to deenergize the electromagnet after a delay interval. The controller also deenergizes the electromagnet after a delay interval in response to activation of an alarm or in response to a thermal switch sensing a temperature in excess of a set point temperature.

  • Patent number: 5897980
Abstract: In the manufacture of a screen suitable for use as a rear projection screen, a first layer (10) of a photopolymerisable monomer or oligomer which is tacky in its monomeric or oligomeric form and non-tacky in its polymerised form, is exposed to polymerising light, such as ultra-violet light, in a pattern comprising an array of spots of such light, and consequent selective polymerisation is allowed to take place in the first layer (10). There is then applied to the exposed surface of the first layer (10) a printing medium comprising an opaque pigment layer (28) on a supporting substrate (30) so that the pigment layer (28) contacts the exposed surface of the first layer (10) and sticks to the unpolymerised and therefore still tacky regions of the first layer (10), but not to the polymerised regions. The substrate (30) carrying the pigment layer (28) is then stripped from the first layer (10), leaving pigment (28) adhering only to the unpolymerised regions.
