  • Patent number: 5891653
Abstract: The present invention describes the application of specifically derived stress proteins in the modulation of certain specific immune responses in the human and animal body. This application under certain conditions may require the in vitro (out of body) treatment of certain tissues (including cells of all lineages) derived from the intended recipient body or specific donor body, in the case of organ or cell transplantation. The intracellular activity and the subsequent protection against mortality in a cell or tissue has been described in another U.S. patent, U.S. Pat. No. 5,348,945 entitled "Method of treatment with HSP70". The present invention differs from the aforementioned patent in that it does not describe a method for non-specific or specific protection against mortality. The invention may be employed to suppress allograft rejection and the rejection of xenografts, transplanted into human and/or animals.

  • Patent number: 5891241
Abstract: Hydrogenated amorphous carbon mainly composed of sp.sup.3 structure is prepared by adding hydrogen to carbon or decomposing hydrogenated carbon gas, and then rapidly cooling the mixed or decomposed gas on a substrate. The hydrogenated amorphous carbon is irradiated with X rays to excite electrons on the 1s shells of carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are rendered to a state excited with 2.sup.+ ion due to Auger effect caused by the exciation, so as to form atomic vacancies and interlattice atomic couples. The hydrogenated amorphous carbon is then annealed, and carbon atoms are rearranged to rotated triangular pattern. Thus, diamond good of crystallinity useful as a high-temperature semiconductor device, ultraviolet laser diode or protective film can be synthesized at a relatively low temperature and a low pressure. The process is applicable for the growth of a diamond single crystal thin film on a single crystal substrate such as amorphous carbon, silicon, or a Group III-V or II-VI compound semiconductor.

  • Patent number: 5888515
Abstract: A poison ivy (and related dermatitis) treatment composition and method in which a novel composition containing a combination of active ingredients gives new and unexpected results over compositions of the prior art. The inventive composition includes three essential ingredients: extract (fresh sap) of jewelweed (Impatiens species); fresh sap of plantain leaf; and an aqueous colloidal dispersion of subdivided whole oat grains. It is believed that the amphiphilic nature of the aqueous colloidal oat dispersion both preserves the activity of the plantain and jewelweed enzymes, as a result of its oat oil fraction, and also enhances topical delivery to the epidermis due to its aqueous fraction and the stabilizing effect of the oat bran as bulking agent.

  • Patent number: 5885969
Abstract: An enzyme-treated hesperidin, comprising alpha-glucosyl hesperidin, hesperidin and beta-monoglucosyl hesperetin, wherein the content of hesperidin is 0.1 part or less by weight; and that of beta-monoglucosyl hesperetin, 0.1 to 0.5 part by weight, on the basis of 1 part by weight of alpha-glucosyl hesperidin. The present invention also provides a process to produce enzyme-treated hesperidin, which comprises subjecting a solution containing alpha-glucosyl hesperidin and intact hesperidin to alpha-L-rhamnosidase to convert the intact hesperidin into beta-monoglucosyl hesperetin. The enzyme-treated hesperidin, which is excellent in water solubility and is free from crystal precipitation (clouding) even if stored for a prolonged period of time, can be produced from a material containing alpha-glucosylhesperidin and hesperidin by conducting the above simple treatment of material. The present invention further provides a method of using the enzyme-treated hesperidin.
