Abstract: The invention includes compositions of stem and progenitor cells recovered from bone marrow or cord blood containing most of the viable CD34+ cells and substantially depleted of red blood cells resident in the original sample, without any xenobiotic additives to aid cell separation. The invention also includes a system and method for preparing the compositions. The system includes a bag set and a processing device, which utilizes an optical sensor, microcontroller, servo motor, accelerometer, load cell, and battery. The system and method utilize centrifugation to stratify the cells into layers and then separate and transfer the stem cells into a stem cell bag. The processing device's microcontroller receives input from the device's accelerometer, load cell and optical sensor to direct the metering valve in the bag set to open and close to permit the transfer of as many stems cells as possible with as few red cells as possible.

Abstract: Telescoping stabilization system comprising a telescoping composite strut body which comprises a lower member pivotally coupled at a lower end to a base, a medial member telescopically received within the lower member, and an upper member telescopically received within the medial member and having an upper end portion releasably coupled to a strut head and having a reinforcement member received within a complementally shaped exterior peripheral recess formed in the upper member adjacent its upper end portion wherein the reinforcement member includes an exterior surface lying substantially flush with an exterior peripheral surface of the upper member for being slideably receivable within the medial member when the telescoping composite strut body is in a collapsed position and wherein the rectangular reinforcement member precludes the strut head from splitting the upper member when the telescoping composite strut body is in an extended position and side loaded.
Abstract: Combination cart and stand device comprised of a main frame assembly, a wheel assembly operatively coupled proximate to one end of the main frame assembly, and inner and outer support members pivotally coupled to the main frame assembly at a location distal from said wheel assembly wherein the main frame assembly, the inner support member, and the outer support member nest together to form a folded cart configuration while the main frame supports a liquid dispensing container which is transported by wheels of the wheel assembly rolling along an underlying surface of the device and wherein the inner and outer support members pivot apart and the main frame assembly pivots to an inverted elevated position for forming a stand configuration for supporting the liquid dispensing container in an elevated liquid dispensing position. Other types of containers can also be employed with the combination cart and stand device.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for collecting whole blood and then separating it into components for subsequent use or storage. A self-contained bag set is used to collect the sample, which may then be placed into a device adapted to fit into a centrifuge for separation of components. Each component is then sequentially extracted according to density, with a sensor present in the device to control the operation of valves directing the collection of each component. The sensor may be reading one or more of the following characteristics: infrared, optics, density, weight, radioactive, fluorescence, color, magnetism, ultrasonic, capacitance wherein the characteristic is inherent in the blood and blood component or is an additive. Each component may then be separated into its own storage container. The preferred sensors include optics and weight.

Abstract: A shift and scan test tube rack apparatus and method comprised of an array of initially aligned racks each comprised of a row of spaced apart receptacles each having a receptacle window through which a barcode on a received barcode labeled test tube is viewable and each rack further comprised of a plurality of line of sight windows each interposed between two adjacent spaced apart receptacles, and a shifting device for individually shifting any one of the racks in the array of initially aligned racks to a shifted position that allows a plurality of the receptacle windows in the shifted rack to be viewed through the plurality of line of sight windows in the remaining aligned racks for reading barcodes on barcode labeled test tubes received in the shifted rack.
