Patent number: 9433469Abstract: The present disclosure concerns packaging adapted to accommodate a series of implant components, e.g. femoral components for artificial knee joints, which vary in size but have a common thickness dimension. The packaging is designed to provide a clearance between its internal parts which approximates this common thickness dimension but is also able to accommodate variations in the other dimensions of the implant components. In a convenient approach, a base portion is provided which has a vertical projection with a top surface adapted to support a portion of the inner surface of the major arch of the components of said series. It is mated with a second structural member which has an arcurate surface whose contour approximates a portion of the outside surface of the major arch of the components in this series. Means are provided for holding it in a fixed special relationship with said base portion.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2013Date of Patent: September 6, 2016Assignee: Bemis Company, Inc.Inventor: Tad R. Patent number: 9242431Abstract: The present disclosure is concerned with forming and non-forming webs with improved puncture resistance suitable for use in semi-automatic horizontal form fill and seal (HFFS) packaging machines and a process for packaging hard food items with sharp angular surfaces using such webs in such machines. The webs have a double wall partially laminated structure. The structure is conveniently formed by adhesively laminating two component films in a face to face configuration using a pattern of adhesive which leaves a substantial portion of the two facing surfaces unlaminated. The lamination just needs to be sufficient that the two component films will hot form together when they are vacuum drawn into a die to form a cavity for packaging the food items. The webs comprise at least a first thermoplastic component film having substantial stored shrink forces and a second thermoplastic component film having no substantial stored shrink forces.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2013Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Bemis Company, Inc.Inventors: Tara K. Cruz, Tyler J. Theobald

Publication number: 20130048636Abstract: Containers are disclosed, as well as multilayer films used in such containers, which advantageously maintain a high seal strength even after being subjected to retort conditions for sterilization. These retortable containers and multilayer films are also beneficially self-venting upon exposure to microwave heating, when the internal container pressure exceeds a threshold value. The self-venting nature of these containers arises from particular sealing characteristics, in which the seal width differs in defined, self-venting seal regions, relative to non-venting seal regions of a given peripheral seal. Particular structural features and geometries of the self-venting seal regions can be used to improve the location of venting and control of the vented gases.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2011Publication date: February 28, 2013Applicant: BEMIS COMPANY, INC.Inventor: BENJAMIN PAUL MACK

Patent number: 6325541Abstract: A resealable closure for a bag is described wherein the bag has upper and lower ends and including a front wall member, a back wall member, and opposite side wall members. The lower end of the bag is sealed in conventional fashion. The upper ends of the wall members are folded downwardly adjacent the front wall member to form a flap which extends across the upper end of the bag with the upper flap being permanently sealed, by an adhesive, to the front wall member except for a flap portion adjacent one of the side wall members. The resealable closure is positioned between the flap portion and the front wall of the bag and permits the flap portion to be opened to form a pour opening in the upper comer of the bag. The flap portion may be resealed by the resealable closure. The closure is designed so that the contents of the bag will not come into contact with any sticky or tacky surface as the material is being poured from the bag.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Bemis Company, Inc.Inventors: Ronald G.
