Patent number: 4910688Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining on-machine, components of variances over an entire frequency range, of a property of a substantially continuous moving sheet material. At least two property-sensing detectors measure and each provide a signal Y(t) proportional to a sheet material property at a different location in the cross machine direction of a moving sheet material. Preferably a spectrum analyzer, determines the power spectral density function G(f) for each detector's signal, and the coherence function COH(f) between the two detectors' signals. On the basis of these results, the total variance, the machine direction variance, the residual variance and the contributions of the machine-directional cyclic and non-cyclic variances of the property of interest are determined, preferably by a computer. These contributions are generally indicative of process and/or machine upsets.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: Domtar Inc.Inventor: Junis Amini

Patent number: 4770742Abstract: A method for increasing the efficiency of the caustizing process which comprises: (a) adding to a green liquor between 78 and 82% of the stoichiometric amount of lime necessary to react with the amount of Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 present in the green liquor to obtain a white liquor containing NaOH and lime mud. The white liquor is then clarified by extracting the lime mud present to obtain a white liquor having a total solid concentration of about 10-60 grams/liter. The supernatant liquid of the white liquor is treated with an additional amount of lime to increase the causticity to about 87%, then allowing further causticizing reaction between the lime and Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3. The remaining lime mud present is removed to obtain a white liquor which has the causticity of about 87%. One is thus able to raise the causticity of partially clarified white liquor following the normal causticizing process, the mud present being sufficient to increase causticity without substantially decreasing settling rate.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1987Date of Patent: September 13, 1988Assignee: Domtar Inc.Inventor: Alexander K. Bonsu

Patent number: 4757938Abstract: A blank, defining an I beam partition, has a center panel extending at each end edge into a foldably connected substantially L-shaped end panel. The ell extensions of the L-shaped end panels are adjacent one of the side edges of the center panel. At least one of the L-shaped end panels has about the center of its widest portion a cut portion defining an aperture. The L-shaped end panels are bent about their edge foldably connected to the center panel, to extend substantially perpendicularly away from the center panel thus defining an I beam partition to be snugly inserted in boxes. The invention is also directed to a box having the I beam partition wherein each of the L-shaped end panels is snugly positioned adjacent one of the ends of the box to reinforce the ends. The center panel extends between the L-shaped end panels, dividing the box in two portions and cooperating with the L-shaped end panels and the ends to prevent inward and outward movements of the ends of the box.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1987Date of Patent: July 19, 1988Assignee: Domtar Inc.Inventor: Arthur B. Patent number: 4756837Abstract: A wet, pressure, partial oxidation process to favor the partial oxidation of black liquor obtained from soda pulping. This is obtained by adjusting the equivalent of sodium ion content of a soda pulping black liquor within the range of about 21 to 26 weight % based on the total weight of the dissolved black liquor solids. This adjustment favorably reduces lignin fragments into short chain organic acids and thereby increases their production. In the case of potassium, the adjustment of the sodium content is carried out using an equivalent amount of a molar basis of potassium ion. A product wherein the amount of short chain organic acid salts is between 70 and 90%, the amount of aromatic lignin fragments and aromatic products thereof is between 0 and 10% and sodium carbon/bicarbonate mixture constitutes not more than 20% on the dry solids basis is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1987Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Assignee: Domtar Inc.Inventor: Alex Nadezhdin

Patent number: 4744882Abstract: A simpler and new process for the polycondensation of a sulfonated coal tar fraction comprising: sulfonating a coal tar fraction having a distillation range of 200.degree. to 240.degree. at normal pressure, with an excess of 20-30% mole of sulfuric acid, as opposed to 105% in the prior art, for 4-8 hours at a temperature of 160.degree. C..+-.10.degree. C. under reflux. The product is diluted with water to render it fluid at about 80.degree. C. and molar ratio of formaldehyde per mole of the sulfonated coal tar fraction is then added gradually at a temperature of about 85.degree. C..+-.5.degree. C., then gradually heated for about 1 to 4 hours at 100.degree. to 106.degree. C., and then further raised to 106.degree. C.-120.degree. C. for 2 to 4 hours. The product is then cooled and neutralized. With this process, new polycondensates with improved properties are produced. The polycondensation including neutralization is completed within 16 hours from the time the formaldehyde is added.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1987Date of Patent: May 17, 1988Assignee: Domtar IncInventors: Samuel Cukier, Marvin D.
