  • Patent number: 4842570
Abstract: For maintaining a desired level of belt tension upon a change in the spacing of belt rollers on which the belt is trained, which results from heating of the housing that supports at least one of the rollers of the belt, the tensioning roller for the belt is supported on a pivot plate or rocker arm. The plate has a pivot and the tensioning roller is mounted on the plate eccentric of the pivot of the plate. A connecting rod extends between the pivoting plate and a connection point. The connecting rod has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the housing on which the belt roller is supported, whereby as the heat caused expansion of the housing moves the belt rollers apart, the connecting rod pivots the plate for the tensioning roller in a direction and to an extent to maintain a desired, e.g. substantially constant tension level on the belt. Or, the connecting rod and tensioning roller may be positioned for altering the level of tension during heat-caused expansion, e.g.

  • Patent number: 4825750
Abstract: A vacuum breaking-force booster has a sequential control valve without a response path. First and second pressure chambers are separated by a diaphragm with a diaphragm disk in it and the diaphragm disk is connected with a shaft that supports a radially inward valve seat which presses against a spring biased sealing disk. Communication between the first and second chambers is past the inner valve seat. A shiftable sleeve extends through the lid of the first of the chambers and includes a collar which engages the inside of the lid for determining the maximum extend the sleeve can move out of the lid. A pressure piston extends through the sleeve. A bridge connects the sleeve with the pressure piston for moving together. An elastomeric bellows attaches the sealing disk to the sleeves and the pressure piston; the outer valve seat is defined on the sleeve for engaging the sealing disk. A spring normally urges the sealing disk toward both of the valve seats.

  • Patent number: 4820060
Abstract: A high precision, two-row ball bearing wherein the inner races of the two rows are worked into the shaft and there are respective outer rings around the rows of balls. A spacer bushing is axially disposed between the outer rings. The spacer bushing is of a single piece with an axial slot extending along its length. The slot has a width approximately equal to the diameter of the shaft. The center of the diameter of the bore of the spacer bushing is offset from the center point of the diameter of the external periphery of the spacer bushing, whereby the spacer bushing is radially thinnest opposite the axial slot and thickens toward the slot for balancing the mass of the spacer bushing with the material removed from the slot. A housing bushing surrounds the spacer bushing and the outer rings.

  • Patent number: 4816691
Abstract: A measurement apparatus for measuring and evaluating the latent photoluminescence present in a radio photoluminescent (RPL) glass which has been irradiated by gamma or x-ray radiation. The latent photoluminescence is measured by irradiating the glass by ultraviolet light and by measuring the resulting photoluminescence that emanates from the glass. In addition to the conventional measurement components which include one measurment branch for measuring the photoluminescence emitted from the glass and a second measurement branch for measuring the magnitude of the light emitted from the ultraviolet source there is provided an auxiliary common light source, the light of which is coupled, via a an optical beam splitter, to the first and second measurement branches. By using a single, common auxiliary light source, measurement inaccuracies that otherwise result from dark currents and parameter drifting in the first and second measurement systems are factored out.

  • Patent number: 4812058
Abstract: A tapered roller bearing has an outer ring and an inner ring, a row of rollers between the rings and a cage or separator. The inner ring has spaced apart flanges or lips between which the rollers move. The cage includes an annular ring at the radially smaller side which has undulations circumferentially around that ring. The indulations have axially inwardly directed crests that rest against and are pretensioned to urge the rollers toward the other inner ring flange. The webs of the cage between neighboring rollers have radial projections which engage the flange at the radially smaller side of the bearing. The distance between the plane which passes through the axial end surfaces of those radial projections and the plane which is defined by the tips of the undulation crests against the ends of the rollers is slightly greater than the difference between the distance apart of the flanges and the length of the rollers between the flanges.

  • Patent number: 4803834
Abstract: The jacket enclosing a motor driven textile spindle of the type wherein the spindle is driven by a separate motor which is mounted on a common base with the spindle is modified to include air inlet and air exit openings. The motor is located in proximity to the spindle and is coupled to it by a toothed belt or the like. As the spindle is rotated by the motor air is drawn in through the inlet opening of the spindle and exits through the exit openings in the form of a strong stream of air which blows on and cools the motor. In this manner the spindle doubles as a fan for the motor and the necessity of providing a separate fan for the motor is avoided, resulting in savings in space and energy for driving a fan.

  • Patent number: 4797014
Abstract: A high-spped anti-friction bearing particularly useful for airplane power plants, the bearing having an outer ring and an inner ring. The inner ring is axially split at the rolling elements into two axial sections. The axial sections are each generally L-shaped in cross section, with one arm of each L backed against the other. To enable the bearing rings to be relatively thin walled in the radial direction and to prevent undesirable deformation thereof during the manufacture or installation, each of the rings is provided on at least one axial side and preferably on both axial sides with projecting axial extensions. Each extension preferably tapers narrower in its radial thickness axially outward. Each extension includes a cylindrical portion and a frustoconically shaped portion, usually with the cylindrical portion axially more inward and the frustoconical portion axially more outward.

  • Patent number: 4771598
Abstract: In an arrangement for texturing threads used in producing yarn, the threads are preheated by passing through channels of a contact heater before passing through the known yarn texturing, e.g. false twisting units. To increase thread and yarn production with a particular contact heater, two threads are passed through a respective heating channel in the heater, rather than one thread. To accomplish this, one thread has a right hand, regular or Z-twist or turn and the other has a left hand, reverse or S-twist or turn, and their crimp causes them to avoid each other at opposite sides of the channel, and not to undesirably contact. A respective texturing unit is supplied for each of the threads that has been heated.

  • Patent number: 4772138
Abstract: A sealed antifriction bearing with an inner and outer ring and rolling elements between them includes sealing rings at both axial ends of the annular space between the rings. A sealing ring is fixed to the outer ring and rotates with it. At the inner ring, the sealing ring has a resilient sealing lip with a sealing edge adjacent the inner ring. Projections from the sealing lip project toward the inner ring and are wedge shaped and oriented such that relative rotation of the outer and inner rings causes the projections to convey lubricating oil axially into the annular space between the bearing rings. The sealing lip has a less inclined surface axially inward of the sealing edge and a more sharply inclined surface outward of the sealing edge. The projections are on the sealing lip surface axially inward of the sealing edge.

  • Patent number: 4767224
Abstract: A window cage for a cylindrical roller bearing includes a U-shaped cross section, annular cage having opposite cage rings which engage the ends of the rollers and webs joining the cage rings and extending between the rollers. The opposite sides of each web converge in the radial direction inwardly of the pocket recesses for the rollers. Therefore, spaced apart, opposing sides of two adjacent webs converge in the radial direction outwardly of the pocket recesses to engage a roller in the recess from behind. Radially outward beyond the converging surfaces, the web sides have generally parallel surfaces which are spaced apart slightly less than the diameter of the roller. Recesses are defined in the cage rings at the bottoms of the pocket recesses.
