Patent number: 8156732Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for regenerating an exhaust gas treatment device. A controller module directs an injector to provide reductant to an exhaust gas treatment device over a plurality of rich intervals during a regeneration cycle. In addition, the controller module directs the injector to reduce the reductant provided to the exhaust gas treatment device over a lean interval between the rich intervals to create a lean environment within the exhaust gas treatment device. In one embodiment, the controller module modifies the reductant provided during each rich interval, the number of rich intervals, the length of the rich intervals, and the length of the lean intervals in response to an exhaust gas state.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2006Date of Patent: April 17, 2012Assignee: Fleetguard, Inc.Inventors: Michael Cunningham, Bradlee Stroia

Patent number: 7900441Abstract: The invention provides a NOx adsorber aftertreatment system for internal combustion engines which utilizes at least one precat operatively coupled to at least one NOx adsorber to aid in the regeneration of the NOx adsorber. Fuel is injected into a precat located upstream of a NOx absorber producing heat, H2O, and reductants such as CO, HC, and volatile hydrocarbons, which are input into the NOx absorber. The combination of heat, water, and reductants help to efficiently regenerate the NOx Adsorber which in turn releases exhausts products such as CO2 and N2. Regeneration of a NOx adsorber can be performed during periods of reduced exhaust gas flow lowering the fuel penalty associated with NOx adsorber regeneration. The pre-cat, NOx adsorber regenerating aftertreatment system of the present invention may be used with any suitable control system.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2004Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Assignee: Fleetguard, Inc.Inventors: Rahul Mital, Bradlee J. Patent number: 7500358Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for enhancing protection of a soot filter. The method enhances soot filter protection by interpreting a baseline regeneration scheme, estimating whether a set of current soot filter conditions indicate that a regeneration is occurring, and setting an engine operating indicator if an internal combustion engine is operating such that a threshold amount of soot is being generated. The method may continue with incrementing a first counter based on the baseline regeneration scheme and the engine operating indicator, and activating a regeneration request indicator when the first counter reaches a first threshold. The method may further include incrementing a second counter when the regeneration request indicator is active, where the incrementing value for the second counter is based on whether a regeneration is occurring. The method may further include deactivating the regeneration request indicator when the second counter reaches a second threshold.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2006Date of Patent: March 10, 2009Assignee: Fleetguard, IncInventors: Nishant Singh, Daniel D.
