  • Patent number: 5279191
Abstract: A fully dense ceramic-metal body including about 40-68 v/o .alpha.-alumina; about 10-30 v/o of a granular, hard refractory carbide, nitride, or boride; about 20-40 v/o silicon carbide platelets or elongated grains; and about 2-10 v/o of a dispersed metal phase combining Ni and Al mostly segregated at triple points of the microstructure. The preferred metal phase contains a substantial amount of the Ni.sub.3 Al ordered crystal structure. In the preferred body, the reinforcing SiC phase is partially incorporated into the alumina grain, and bridges the grain boundaries. The body including a segregated metal phase is produced by densifying a mixture of the hard phase components and the metal component, with the metal component being present in the mixture as Ni powder and Al powder. The body may be used as a cutting tool for machining nickel superalloys or cast iron at speeds up to about 1000 sfm, feed rates up to about 0.012 in/rev, and depth of cut up to about 0.10 inches.

  • Patent number: 5251964
Abstract: The forward surface of a bit mount against which the shoulder of a cutting bit can rotatably bear has carbide inserts brazed therein to reduce wear of the forward surface. In the manufacture thereof, there are insert holes in the forward surface into which the carbide inserts are inserted. There are smaller holes next to the insert holes, and overlapping therewith, into which braze slugs are inserted. There is an interference fit between the carbide inserts and the braze slugs, which aids in retaining the carbide inserts in the insert holes during the brazing operation.

  • Patent number: 5238341
Abstract: A connection system for connecting an interchangeable tool head to the spindle of a numerically controlled machine includes radially displaceable wedge members which when actuated radially to an outer clamping position provide for a clamping connection between the spindle and the tool head. When actuated to an inner release position the system allows for withdrawal of the tool head from the spindle. The wedge members are displaced by a central actuating rod connected to the wedge members via cam means such that the wedge members are positively driven by the cam means in both radial directions of movement.

  • Patent number: 5230591
Abstract: A polygonal lay down indexable cutting insert for a centrally located island and light feed and light depth of cut applications. The insert has a variable land surface angle which is 14.degree. at each corner of the insert and merges into a 12.degree. as measured along the flanks of the insert. A second descending angle is 27.degree. along the flanks. The corners are radiused along the variable land surface and the descending angle surfaces to impart better strength and cutting for the insert. Moreover, the first variable descending angle is greater than the first variable descending angle along the flanks of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5216845
Abstract: A method for machining a high temperature nickel based alloy workpiece or other difficult-to-work material. The method involves machining the workpiece at an effective cutting speed of up to about 1500 sfm per minute, moving a ceramic-metal cutting tool across the face of the workpiece at a rate of up to about 0.04 in/rev, and cutting the workpiece with the ceramic-metal cutting tool to effect a depth of cut of up to about 0.15 inches per pass. The ceramic-metal cutting tool has a density of at least about 95% of theoretical, and includes about 80-98%, preferably 88-96%, by volume of granular hard phases and about 2-20%, preferably 4-12%, by volume of a metal phase. The granular hard phases are (a) a major hard phase portion of alumina and (b) a minor hard phase portion of hard refractory metal carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, and borides.

  • Patent number: 5203856
Abstract: A tool mechanism for machining a hole side surface, and for chamfering the ends of the hole, includes a boring cutter and two chamfer cutters oriented so that during an axial infeed of the cutter assembly the hole side surface is machined and a chamfer is formed at one end of the hole. The cutter assembly can be shifted transversely to position a chamfer cutter for machining a second chamfer on the other end of the hole. The cutter assembly is carried on a cutter support member that is swingably mounted on a tool body secured to the spindle of the cutting machine. An actuator device is movable along the tool body axis to adjust the position of the cutter support member.

  • Patent number: 5197556
Abstract: A U-shaped sheet metal brazing shim for disposition within a groove in a drill bit body to encircle the edge area of a plate-type cutting insert. Brazing alloy is provided to form bonds between the shim and opposed surfaces on the cutting insert and drill bit body. Closely spaced holes extend across essentially the entire surface of the metal sheet to provide thermal stress relief within the brazed joint. Border areas of the sheet are left unperforated so that edges of the sheet are relatively smooth and free of sharp projections that could cut into a person's hand while the shim is being handled or repositioned.

  • Patent number: 5193954
Abstract: A mechanism for clamping a cutting tool holder in a socket formed in an end face of a clamping unit in a cutting machine. An axially movable drawbar has a multiple number of flat surfaces obliquely angled to the drawbar axis for exerting cam forces on individual wedge elements that are slidably guided for outward movement into wedge lock engagements with an inturned flange on the tool holder. The wedge elements exert axial forces on the tool holder internal flange for simultaneously achieving a relatively tight fit of the tool holder in the associated socket and a seating of the tool holder against an end face of the clamping unit. The mechanism can be used in rotary or non-rotary machines.

  • Patent number: 5176477
Abstract: A drill is provided having a generally cylindrically shaped body. The body has a rear end structured to releasably connect with a torque transmitting machine in a conventional manner. The body has a forward end which is provided with diametrically opposed seats. Each seat releasably retains a cutting insert. Each cutting insert has a cutting edge projecting forwardly from the forward end of the body. Further, the cutting inserts are oriented so that one cutting edge is at a ten degree positive lead angle and the other cutting edge is at a five degree negative lead angle, the angles being measured normal to the center line of the drill. In operation, the drill is used to provide a bore hole in a workpiece, the bore hole having a predetermined perimeter. As the rotating drill contacts the workpiece, the cutting edges contact the workpiece in a predetermined, progressive manner which thereby creates a plurality of spaced apart circular notches of differing depth in the workpiece.
