  • Patent number: 4298785
Abstract: An arrangement for automatically tracking systems to the center of weld gaps, weld joints or weld reinforcements, in which one or more electrically scanning probes receive signals reflected by a workpiece surface as long as this surface is substantially parallel to the acting surface of the probe. The signals breakdown spontaneously when the surface clearly deviates from the parallel as in the case with the flanks of gaps, joints or reinforcements. The breakdown of the signal is applied for storing an electrical value corresponding to the instantaneous probe position, the probe position for the left flank when traveling from left to right and for the right flank when traveling from right to left. The center of the gap, of the joint or of the reinforcement is computed from the stored electronic position values in a series-connected electronic device, by means of a computer circuit.

  • Patent number: 4225306
Abstract: A method of controlling a heating furnace for steel ingots, particularly a soaking pit for steel ingots, which is charged with a basic fuel quantity for heating the ingots to rolling temperature. The surface temperature of the ingots and thermal data of the furnace are measured and heat balances are established. From the resulting furnace balance temperatures, together with the surface temperature of the ingots, an estimated value for the center temperature of the ingots is determined in an estimating device. The estimated ingot center temperature and the ingot surface temperature as actual temperatures are compared with predetermined ingot core and surface temperatures as nominal temperatures. The resulting difference is used to correct the basic fuel quantity fed to the furnace. The surface temperature of each individual ingot in a furnace may be measured.

  • Patent number: 4194903
Abstract: A method of producing steel with the lowest possible desired sulfur content by desulfurization of pig iron with magnesium coke. The magnesium coke is introduced into the pig iron smelt which is to be desulfurized. An inert gas such as nitrogen is then introduced into the smelt to agitate same until the magnesium is completely reacted. The thus treated smelt is subjected to subsequent inert gas rinsing in order to separate magnesium sulfide from the smelt and convey to into the slag formed on the smelt. A slag-free area is then produced on the surface of the smelt by introducing inert rinsing gas on the surface. Slag powder is introduced upon the exposed surface of the smelt to form a cohesive, viscous slag, which is then withdrawn. Scrap iron having suitable high or low sulfur content may be introduced into the desulfurized pig iron to adjust the desired sulfur content thereof.
