  • Patent number: 4404262
Abstract: A composite metallic and refractory article and a method for manufacturing the article is described in which a metallic layer is partially adsorbed within a refractory layer, such as a ceramic layer. The density of the refractory layer increases as it extends away from the metallic layer. The composite is formed by forcing a molten metal under pressure into the pore structure of the refractory layer. Conveniently, a desired internal shape of the finished product is achieved by using a male mold portion to supply the required pressure and to simultaneously form the article having a desired internal cavity. The application of pressure continues long enough to allow the molten metal to become sufficiently adsorbed within the porous refractory layer. When the composite solidifies, the male mold portion is withdrawn from the finished article. In one embodiment the article formed is a piston having a heat resistant ceramic cap combined with an aluminum body.

  • Patent number: 4400988
Abstract: A tractor vehicle transmission is provided with a two piston brake where each piston operates in opposite directions. A gear is located adjacent the brake which is located in proximity to a wall of the transmission. Thus upon actuation the brake wall contact the gear causing retardation of the gear, its attendant shaft, and the transmission as a whole allowing simpler shifting of the transmission. The piston force against the brake is opposed by a second piston having a spacer means that contacts the transmission wall upon actuation.

  • Patent number: 4396087
Abstract: A self propelled combine having forward main drive wheels and rear steerable wheels. A hydrostatic drive including a variable displacement motor is arranged to drive the main drive wheels. An electronic-hydraulic control system is automatically operable to drive the rear steerable wheels in response to sensing preselected pressure and combine attitude values while automatically varying the displacement of the hydrostatic drive motor to minimize combine speed changes and to provide torque as required under varying loads imposed by hilly terrain or increasing amounts of grain collected in the grain tank of the combine.

Abstract: A wheel that has an alternating tooth structure for improved entry into the soil and movement therethrough for efficient soil lifting and flow, self cleaning and balanced operation. The wheel includes a central hub, four equally spaced spokes extending radially therefrom to a circular flange from which radially extending rearwardly curved, from the direction of travel, teeth extend to work the soil. A tooth of the teeth has a rearward surface that is tapered from one lateral surface to the other and rearwardly to move the soil to one side of the wheel and the adjacent tooth has a rearward surface that is similarly but, oppositely tapered but also rearwardly, to move the soil to the other side of the wheel with the teeth alternating in this sequence around the circumference of the flange.

  • Patent number: 4388987
Abstract: A transmission system particularly usable for transmitting power from an internal combustion engine to the driving wheels of a vehicle such as a tractor includes a multiple ratio mechanical range transmission coupled to an infinitely variable ratio hydromechanical transmission via a manually operable master clutch. A high slip fluid coupling is used to couple the hydromechanical transmission to the engine, and an electronically controlled lockup clutch locks the impeller of the fluid coupling to the output turbine when the speed of the engine exceeds a first predetermined speed, and maintains the coupling locked until the speed of the engine drops below a second substantially lower predetermined speed.

Abstract: Abrasive liquid jet cutting is provided by disposing abrasive particles in positionally supported form, as on a carrier, such as sandpaper, between the liquid jet nozzle and the workpiece. The particles are intercepted by the liquid jet and driven into the workpiece which may be ferrous or nonferrous metal. The particles may be bonded to a paper-like backing, incorporated in a binder, such as a viscous paste, or formed into a rod-like structure. Variable feed of the workpiece or the abrasive carrier can be used to provide optimized or selective abrasive cutting.
