  • Patent number: 4440338
Abstract: A friction welding machine for welding first and second tubular workpieces together comprises a workhead assembly having a rotatable chuck for forcefully displacing the first workpiece into frictional engagement with the second workpiece. The workhead includes a shear mechanism having a shear tool mounted for selected displacement along the chuck's rotational axis. A shear cylinder of the shear mechanism positions the shear tool at a selected ready position within the first tubular workpiece preparatory to a welding operation, advances the shear tool upon completion of the welding operation into the second tubular workpiece thereby shearing the freshly formed internal weld flash, and retracts the shear tool to a remote position after shearing.

  • Patent number: 4435883
Abstract: A control circuit for apparatus stretching a web between intake, discharge, and intermediate pulling stations (20-1, 20-2, 20-3). The circuit includes a first signal generator (32) for providing a signal to the intake discharge station (20-1) corresponding to the desired speed of the web at that station. A multiplier (40) alters the first signal in accordance with the amount of overall stretching, or stretch ratio, desired in the apparatus. The multiplier provides a second signal to the discharge station (20-3) corresponding to the speed of the web at the discharge station necessary to obtain the overall stretching. A second signal generator (48-66) subtracts a selected amount of the difference between the first and second signals from the second signal to provide a third signal to the intermediate pulling station (20-2) that distributes the overall stretching in the apparatus between intermediate zones formed by the adjacent pulling stations.

  • Patent number: 4348718
Abstract: A timing generator for use with multi-phase controlled rectifier systems is disclosed in which a ramp signal is produced in phase synchronization with the power source and compared with the value of a command signal. The command signal is indicative of the desired SCR ignition angle. A sequencing circuit, having a finite number of output states is cyclically stepped from one state to the next by the comparator. The sequence circuit couples a source of SCR-gating pulses to the appropriate SCR in accordance with its state and with a predetermined pattern of SCR ignitions which characterize the multi-phase source. One aspect of the invention concerns the multiplexing of the comparator output whereby the command signal is offset by 60.degree. (electrical) after each comparator transition to set up conditions for the next transition.A further aspect of the invention concerns the generation of an alternate ramp, 180.degree.

  • Patent number: 4341297
Abstract: An indexable rotary cylindrical magazine has part pockets around the periphery parallel to the magazine axis. A guide supplies parts end-to-end to an entrance end of a pocket in a loading position. A reciprocable feed finger engages the downstream end of any part in a pocket at the loading position to index the magazine to the next pocket only if the part is substantially completely received in that pocket at the loading position. Stripper prongs remove the parts from the filled pockets and supply them side-by-side into a part chute. A utilization machine such as a planetary thread rolling machine has a feed mechanism to receive parts from the chute exit and feed them into the threading area. The feed mechanism has feed-in, retract and a dwell range and the parts have approximately twice the length of time to be received in a pocket at the loading position as the time duration of said dwell range.
