  • Patent number: 4828246
Abstract: The invention relates to a back-edge stop in the form of a cross-member for sheet stackers of sheet-fed presses having a vertically positionable intermediate stacker which forms a relatively large stack, the cross-member being pivotally connected to the sheet brake by way of a link parallelogram support. A sheet brake has disposed on it fixed sheet stops and at least one further fixed sheet stop having a recess in which a brush is pivotally mounted, the bristles of the brush being inclined forwardly and downwardly and extending into the major surface of the stack a distance substantially equivalent to the difference in sheet size. As the intermediate stacker rises and falls, the brush is pivoted, by way of an inclined cam surface on the cross-member, this surface being connected non-positively to engage an actuating edge of the brush to make a controlled pivoting movement around a horizontal axis extending transversely to the direction of sheet movement.

  • Patent number: 4767694
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of preparing a varnish blanket. Instead of a proof being used for pre-location of required varnish-free zones on a blanket for blanked-out in-line varnishing in rotary presses, the zones required not to be varnished are transferred by means of a reference copy, and after physico-chemical pretreatment adapted to the surface properties of the blanket, to a blanket stuck to a support plate. In addition to polyvinyl alcohol copying layers or coatings sensitized by bichromate, wipe-on copying layers sensitized by diazo salts are suitable, a positive or negative original being copied by direct contact in known manner onto a blanket thus pretreated. The zones required not to be varnished can therefore be preformed by cutting out the top layer of the blanket.

  • Patent number: 4766811
Abstract: To apply a cover plate on a printing cylinder, particularly to prevent corrosion of the cylinder surface, a double-side coated adhesive foil (2) is applied to a cover plate (1, 36, 65) which is wrapped about the cylinder, so that the cover plate will be adhered to the cylinder by the double-side coated adhesive foil. To install the cover plate, the cover plate (1) with the adhesive foil applied on one side, and, upon removal of a protective strip (S), is first placed in a clamping groove (34, 47, 65) of the cylinder, temporarily secured therein to provide for the adhesive to retain maximum adhesion strength, then wrapped about the cylinder, for example by a resilient pressure roller (40) while stripping off the protective strip (S) from between the cover plate and the cylinder; the end portion of the cover plate, which is left free from adhesive foil, is then wrapped about the trailing edge (52) of the groove, angled against the groove wall, and there adhered by a liquid or contact adhesive.

  • Patent number: 4765240
Abstract: A safety guard rail (7) can be moved between a position adjacent a nip between two rotating cylinders (3, 4) and a remote position. The safety guard rail has flanges (8, 9) attached thereto, projecting essentially parallel to cover plates (5, 6) already present in the printing machine. The cover plates are formed with guide slits (12, 13) extending downwardly at an inclination, in which guide elements (10, 11) engage, secured to the projecting flanges which hold the safety guard rail (7). Limit switches are coupled to be engaged by the flanges and/or the guide elements to provide ON and OFF signals, in dependence on the position of the safety guard rail with respect to the nip, to inhibit printing machine operation when the guard rail is in a remote position, for example for changing of rubber blankets on the cylinders, and permitting printing machine operation only when the safety guard rail (7) is adjacent the nip to be able to carry out its safety guarding function.

  • Patent number: 4754701
Abstract: To permit separating a flexograph ink trough, and flexograph ductor or trough roller into axial zones for respectively differently colored inks, a separating plate is located beneath the doctor blade which has a sealing element (7) attached thereto, resiliently engaging the underside of two doctor blades (2, 3), facing the ductor or trough roller (1) from different directions to permit operation of the ductor or trough roller (1) in either direction of rotation. A low-friction surface is applied to the edge which faces the ductor or trough roller, the sealing element spanning the space between the doctor blades and being matched to the circumference of the ductor or trough roller. The doctor blades extend axially beyond the sealing elements. The separating plates and sealing elements can be mounted on units which are axially positionable along an ink trough, and hence the ductor or trough roller, at selected positions, as required by the axial extent of differently colored inking zones.

  • Patent number: 4748909
Abstract: To simplify a transverse stretching apparatus and provide rollers which do not require a change in the respective axes of rotation, two rollers are located adjacent, parallel, and spaced from each other, in which each of the rollers have outer cylindrical sections of respectively different diameters, with an intermediate essentially conical section, merging smoothly with the outer cylindrical section. The rollers are so located that the smaller diameter circumferential section of one of the rollers (4) is opposite the larger circumferential section of the other roller (5), and, when in essentially axial alignment, define a neutral position in which the sums of the diameters of the rollers at any axial plane passing transversely through the axes of rotation, will be the same. Upon relatively axially shifting the rollers with respect to each other (compare FIGS.

  • Patent number: 4748911
Abstract: To compensate for expansion and width of printed substrates, for example paper webs, when subjected to damping liquid, printing plates are located on the printing cylinder in axially shiftable adjusted position, so that register can be maintained. The register adjustment arrangement includes coupling elements (10, 13; 11, 14) engageable with an adjustment device (7, 12, 18) and engagement plates or pins (5, 6; 21, 22), the coupling device conjointly being moved by an externally engageable adjustment knob or nut by threaded engagement between the knob and nut, in which the thread coupling between an engagement plate or pin at an outermost plate is at a pitch which is higher than the thread engagement with the engagement pins or plates of a more inwardly placed printing plate. Upon rotation of the adjustment knob or nut, thus, the outermost plate will be moved axially farther than the inwardly moved plate, although both plates moving together.

  • Patent number: 4742769
Abstract: Roll-off shocks of cylinders, typically rubber blanket cylinders with respect to each other, are ameliorated or avoided by inserting a filler element into the groove which is located in the median third of the cylinder, but does not extend over the entire length thereof. The filler element is supported on the bottom of the groove, preferably over a damping or resilient element, and has a dimension which is equal to the outer circumference (44) of the bearer ring or the theoretical pitch circle (45) of a drive gear of the cylinder, with tolerance of not more than about .+-.0.05 mm. In order to insert the filler elements into the respcective grooves, the cover layers or, if necessary, also the substrate supports of rubber blankets, are removed in the region of the axial length of the filler element. Preferably, the filler elements are made of metal.

  • Patent number: 4739702
Abstract: Some conventional printing cylinders include therein a damping system having springs which receive oscillation forces transmitted from the cylinder wall, for example by cross bars, disks, or the like, to dampen oscillations occurring upon roll-off of an axial clamping groove formed in the cylinder against an engagement cylinder. To reduce not only bending and torsional oscillations, but also the effect of the impact shock when the groove rolls off against the engagement cylinder, impact positions are defined within the cylinder against which either the damping springs or elements coupled to the damping springs can engage the cylinder upon deflection thereof due to the impact shock so that the resulting elastic shock or impact is likewise transferred to the damping springs of the damping system. The damping system includes oscillation transferring rods, bars, or the like which may be embedded or at least in part contacted by elastic materials, such as foam or the like.

  • Patent number: 4738200
Abstract: To prevent entirely, or at least largely, loss of contact of a pair of blanket cylinders as they roll off against each other upon passing the respective clamping grooves of the rubber blanket cylinders, the rubber blanket cylinders adjacent the edges of the clamping groove (13,14) are formed with transition zones (15,17; 16,18) which rise above a circle formed by the cylinders, in cross section. The rise (Y) is in accordance with a non-circular mathematical function, and, for a cylinder of, for example, about 20 cm diameter, can be in the order of 0.1 mm. At operating speeds of current rotary offset printing machines, the rubber blankets will hardly lose contact from each other and thus stripping formation, due to oscillations of the blanket cylinders as they roll off against each other, is effectively eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4722619
Abstract: A mounting assembly for bearing races is provided which enables split races for roller bearings to be fixed on a bearing member in a space-saving system wherein the bearing member includes at least one race groove parallel to two expanding grooves such that narrow webs are left on either side of the race groove. On assembly, for example, of the inner ring of a roller bearing in the race groove, these webs are flanged or crimped against the bearing end faces such that two ends of the axially split bearing race are securely held by appropriate profiling or beveling of the end faces of the race. Assembly may be carried out by inserting a crimping wheel into the expanding grooves and crimping the webs by means of a conically deforming surface. The mounting can be advantageously applied, for example, in connection with an eccentrically drilled bearing bushing for the plain bearings of blanket cylinders in offset printing machines.
