  • Patent number: 4620481
Abstract: In an inking unit, the ink is taken in metered quantities from an ink reservoir and distributed by inking rollers to form an ink film adapted to be applied by ink applicator rollers to a printing plate. To avoid mottling, an ink applicator roller is moved axially in the phase of a machine cycle during which the ink applicator roller is not in engagement with the printing plate. During the ink application, on the other hand, the ink applicator roller performs either no axial movement or only a slight axial movement. This avoids an undesirable increase of the size of the screen dots and improves the print quality.

  • Patent number: 4611538
Abstract: An inking unit for a printing machine including a duct consisting of a plurality of adjacent duct segments mounted individually on the duct roller of the machine wherein each duct segment forms a carrier for at least some of the ink metering elements. The mounting of the duct segments on the duct roller is such that it substantially eliminates the hydrodynamic pressure forces occurring at the duct roller and the ink metering elements during operation. As a result, the duct roller deflection and the influence thereof on the metering gap are greatly reduced so that readjustment of the ink metering elements with respect to one another during operation can be dispensed with.

  • Patent number: 4605213
Abstract: The folded items (9) arriving from a folding apparatus (1) are grasped on the leading folded spine (10) by forward grippers (12) on an opening cylinder (8). Then the overhang (11) of each item is grasped by rearward grippers (13). Because of centrifugal force and optionally by means of an electrostatic charging device (7), the lower part of the folded item (9), after being released from the conveyor belts (5, 6), is repelled. As a result, rods (14) secured on a chain system (15) can be introduced, during their upward movement that is at a tangent to the opening cylinder (8), it between the two halves of one printed item, after which the transporting of the folded items (9) to further chain systems (such as 17) can be effected. Subsequently, folded items (9) can be collected one on top of the other and/or accelerated or delayed in accordance with how the transfer location is embodied.

  • Patent number: 4602774
Abstract: To pick up folded paper sheets, being folded, for example, by a standard folding apparatus (1, 2, 4-6), an endless transport belt or chain (71; 7, 7, 7', 18) retains thereon carrier elements (9) made of highly elastic flat spring steel, being guided by the endless transport means in a path which places the flat spring steel strips edgewise between the folding products at the folding zone, then transport the folded products along the path and then decelerates the folded products while spreading them apart. The latter combined effect is obtained by guiding the transport means over a deflection wheel (11, 16) at the region of attachment of the carrier elements to the transport chain or belt, while retaining the flat strip free end portions, forming hangers, at or close to the center of rotation of the deflection wheel, so that, effectively, the folded paper products will be spread while, at the same time, will be slowed, or have a linear speed of, or close to 0.

  • Patent number: 4601387
Abstract: To provide a belt transport path in which the belts cyclically decelerate and accelerate, to feed paper subject matter, for example from a "first longitudinal folding apparatus" to a "second longitudinal folding apparatus" at reduced speed, two eccenter pulleys are located in respectively different planes, for example parallel to each other, rotating on a common shaft, and having the same eccentricity (x). A first run of the belt is guided from the paper transport path to loop, in part, about a first eccenter pulley, then guiding a second run of the belt from the first eccenter pulley into the plane of the second eccenter pulley, and a second guide pulley guides a third run of the belt from the second eccenter pulley back to the transport path. Two belt system may be used, located in mirror-image relationship, or a single belt can be guided adjacent the run which contacts the transported subject matter (E) from an eccenter located outside the plane of the printed subject matter.

  • Patent number: 4598640
Abstract: In a web-fed offset rotary press printing unit comprising four cylinders (2-5), in order to move the two inner cylinders, for instance blanket cylinders (3, 4), apart from one another without having to move the outer cylinders (2, 5), the cylinder trunnions (6, 7) of the inner cylinders (3, 4) are positioned on double eccentric bushes (8, 9; 10, 11). By means of tie rods (16-19), all the pairs of eccentric bushes (8, 9; 10, 11) are pivoted in common about the same angle, resulting in a linear movement in opposite directions (P or P') by the inner cylinders (3, 4) with respect to the straight line (G) on which the four cylinders are disposed.

  • Patent number: 4598641
Abstract: To reliably hold a sheet in a rotary sheet-fed offset printing machine, a plurality of pin or needle-like projections (11), preferably held on a holding strip (12), are located transversely just behind or beneath the grippers. The sheet is pressed against the pins by the rubber blanket of the blanket cylinder, to impale the sheet on the pins; or, if the projections are located beneath the grippers, the grippers indirectly apply pressure on the sheet to impale the sheet on the projections. In another embodiment (FIG. 6), a pressure block (13) with a resilient engagement surface (14) presses the grippers on the sheet for also impaling the sheet on the pins or needles. The projections may also be formed as knife edges (FIG. 4). Alternatively, the printing line can be shifted forwardly (FIG. 5), so that the rubber blanket will engage the ends of the grippers.

  • Patent number: 4596183
Abstract: A force or movement sensor is disposed on or proximate to an impression cylinder of a sheet-fed printing machine in order to sense the printing pressure. The sensor is sampled in synchronism with the rotation of the impression cylinder and the feeding of the sheets in order to detect a first pressure signal when pressure is applied to the fed sheets, and to detect a second pressure signal when the impression cylinder is relieved of the printing pressure. The differential value of the first and second pressure signals is displayed as an output or is evaluated by a pressure control system. As a result, static and quasi-static disturbances are suppressed. The mesurement is not affected by wear of the cylinder bearings or journals, variations in machine speed, and zero-point shift in the sensor and its associated electronics. These disturbances are further suppressed by averaging or accumulating samples over sample intervals and over a number of revolutions of the impression cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4596468
Abstract: An apparatus and method for automatically checking and correcting register adjustment of a multi-color sheet-fed printing press wherein register marks are read by an ink densitometer on a remote control desk. The densitometer head is mounted on an X,Y positioning mechanism under the control of a register control computer so that the densitometer head scans cross-shaped register marks to determine both axial and peripheral register error. Preferably both right-hand and left-hand marks are used in order to pecisely determine skew or diagonal error, and the densitometer head rapidly traverses from one mark to the other mark. Preferably each register mark is made up of offset component marks of the primary colors and the positions of the marks are matched with their respective colors by the time sequence of scan path points of intersection. One color is chosen as a reference from which desired positions are calculated for the other component marks.
