  • Patent number: 5064423
Abstract: An auxiliary combustion air supply arrangement for an internal combustion engine having a combustion air supercharger driven by an exhaust gas turbine. During time periods characterized by lack of sufficient exhaust gas energy, in order to increase the supply of air to the intake manifold of the engine, auxiliary combustion air is obtained directly from a compressed air tank and is supplied to the intake manifold via an appropriate control mechanism. A delay element as part of the fuel injection system is provided, whereby the control mechanism as well as the delay element are actuated by operation of a gas pedal, as a result of which the supply of auxiliary combustion air precedes the fuel injection, with injection of the full fuel injection quantity not being initiated until later.

  • Patent number: 5044157
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing carbon that has been collected in an exhaust gas filter of an internal combustion engine utilizing electrical energy that is introduced via an appropriate electrode arrangement. In order to obtain a more homogeneous current flow and hence a greater (more rapid) burning of carbon without great expenditure, the thermal heating-up of the carbon is effected in exhaust gas conveying chambers and in the filter with the aid of an electrostatic alternating field that is induced between the electrodes and produces radially directed, axially equalized discharge currents, so-called shift currents.

  • Patent number: 5010853
Abstract: A cylinder head sealing element for reciprocating piston engines, especially internal combustion engines, and advantageously engines having cylinder liners, is provided. To solve the increasingly more difficult problem of sealing the cylinder head where the power density of internal combustion engines is increased, a ring-like sealing element is provided, the end faces of which plastically deform when the cylinder head screws are tightened. The inner deformations of the cylinder head resulting from pressure forces in the cylinder are compensated for by elastic yielding of the sealing ring of the combustion chamber. The dimensions of the rib of a collar of a cylinder liner, of the groove of the cylinder head, and of the end faces of the sealing ring are coordinated with one another in such a way that the plastic deformation of the sealing ring is not of such a magnitude that the cylinder liner can deform.

  • Patent number: 5009001
Abstract: A method of increasing the fatigue strength of crankshafts for reciprocating engines, especially internal combustion engines, is provided. When converting naturally aspirating production engines to supercharging to increase the power, the fatigue strength of the crankshaft quickly reaches a limit. Since for reasons of economy it is desirable not to alter the geometry of the crackshaft and to avoid expensive fine burnishing to increase the quality of the surface, and hence the fatigue strength associated therewith, the transition radius from the crankshaft pin to the crank web is inductively surface hardened, and at the same time the finish quality of the surface is reduced. The increased costs for the hardening are balanced by the reduced surface machining that is required.

  • Patent number: 5000146
Abstract: A decompression brake for commercial vehicles, including a hydraulic mechanism that during the compression stroke, in the zone of the ignition-upper dead center position, holds the exhaust valve of the Diesel engine slightly open. The hydraulic mechanism is formed by: an actuating cylinder that controls the exhaust valve and includes an actuating piston, a control line, and a transmitter cylinder that has a transmitting piston. To provide a simpler construction of the hydraulic system, the injection pump that is inherent to the engine is itself used as a controlled transmitter cylinder and piston.

  • Patent number: 4981119
Abstract: A method of increasing the exhaust braking power of a four-stroke, reciprocating piston internal combustion engine, whereby in the braking operation, in a first and third stroke air is drawn in via an intake valve, and in a second and fourth stroke the air is compressed and, by partially opening an exhaust valve, is discharged against a damper that is disposed in an exhaust pipe or manifold. In order to increase the final compression pressure, i.e. to increase the energy that is to be applied for the compression, the exhaust valve is briefly opened at both the beginning and the end of the compression stroke.

  • Patent number: 4976664
Abstract: A drive device for vehicles comprises: a drive prime mover, a power splitting hydrostatic mechanical transmission coupled with the prime mover and having a planetary differential transmission with at least four shafts and two groups of planet wheels, two sun wheels, a web and an annulus, two main shafts forming an input and output and connected with different shafts of the planetary differential transmission, a clutch two variable displacement hydrostatic machines which are respectively connected in at least one operational range with a respective shaft of the planetary differential transmission and are adapted to alternately operate as a pump and as a motor, a first hydrostatic machine which, when the second hydrostatic machine is stationary, being able to be switched over from the input main shaft to the sun wheel, not on the drive side, on transition from one to the other operational range by means of said clutch means and during traction operation is switched over from the motor to the pump function.
