  • Patent number: 6669818
Abstract: A dry end of a tissue machine is made shorter by close-coupling a reel-up to the drying section and supporting the web from the drying section to the reel-up by a foil or a belt such that web stability is maintained, thus allowing high-speed operation. The foil's downstream edge can form a nip with the paper roll and nip load can be controlled by controlling pivotal movement of the foil. The reel-up can include a calendering belt for calendering the web as it passes through a nip between the belt and a reel drum supported on the belt, and a rotatable reel spool on which a paper roll is wound in nipping engagement with the reel drum. Alternatively, the reel drum can be eliminated and the paper roll can be supported on the belt. A composite shaftless core for winding is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20030226279
Abstract: A dry end section for a paper-making machine for producing a high-bulk tissue is provided. Such a machine comprises a through-air dryer adapted to finally dry a paper web and a through-air drying fabric configured to transport the web through the through-air dryer. A separating device is included for facilitating separation of the web from the through-air drying fabric. A reel is also provided and is configured to receive the web thereon. The web is received directly on the separating device or on a fabric wrapped about the separating device. In some instances, the web may be compressed between the separating device and an adjacent roll or by a web-compressing device disposed along the fabric transporting the web. The web is then transported to the reel directly from the fabric or other support mechanism extending between the separating device and the reel, without free draw of the web. Associated methods are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20030183353
Abstract: An apparatus for transferring a tail of a fibrous web through a press section of a machine for making the fibrous web is disclosed. The apparatus includes a threading device positioned between first and second press section transfer devices that is pivotable between an inoperable position and an operable position. The threading device includes a stationary upper surface defined by a plurality of tubes. The tubes discharge air over the upper surface of the threading device to form an air cushion having an underpressure between the tail of the fibrous web and the threading device. The tail of the web is urged by the air cushion to the second transfer device and is threaded thereinto.

  • Publication number: 20030178406
Abstract: A thermal roll for efficiently transferring heat to or from a web is provided. The thermal roll includes a rotatable outer shell having a cylindrical outer mantle and a stationary inner shell within the rotatable outer shell. An annular space is defined between an inner surface of the rotatable outer shell and an outer surface of the stationary inner shell. The annular space of a relatively low volume is filled with a heat exchange fluid, such as oil or water, that exchanges heat with a fibrous web through the mantle of the rotatable outer shell. The low volume of the annular space enables high heat transfer rates to the web and quick and efficient changes to the temperature of the heat exchange fluid. The thermal roll is adaptable for use as various types of rolls, such as calender rolls, press rolls, drying cylinders, and Yankee cylinders.

  • Patent number: 6540873
Abstract: A board machine and method for making a multilayer cardboard web, in which a first layer of the web having a printable surface is formed in a first forming unit and carried on an extended forming wire thereof through a couching unit where the first layer is couched with one or more additional layers, the multilayer web then being carried on the extended wire to a pick-up point. An upper press felt of a double-felted press picks up the web at the pick-up point such that the printable surface faces downward and contacts the lower press felt through the nip of the press. The lower felt is smoother than the upper felt, and the lower felt contacts the lower press roll for a minimum sector angle beyond an exit of the nip to ensure that the web follows the lower felt.

  • Patent number: 6505549
Abstract: In a roll nip (5) formed between a shoe press roll (1) having a concave, plane or slightly convex press shoe (11), a flexible jacket (15) and a hot counter roll (3), the jacket (15) may be damaged by the heat from the counter roll (3) upon a web break. To avoid this, the roll nip (5) is opened by removing one of the press shoe (11) and the hot counter roll (3) from the other, so that the jacket (15) resumes a generally cylindrical shape having an arched portion located across the shoe (11). Then, a force is applied inside the roll jacket (15), directed away from the roll nip (5), to tension the roll jacket (15) over the leading edge and the trailing edge of the press shoe (11), so as to reduce the height of arch of the arched portion over the shoe (11) sufficiently to ensure removal of the jacket (15) from contact with the hot counter roll (3). Preferably, the force against the inside of the jacket is applied by means of a tensioning shoe (61).
