Publication number: 20020139499Abstract: A multi-reel apparatus for use in a drying section of a papermaking machine allows a web to be continuously wound without interruption. The apparatus includes a web support and a pair of vertically stacked reeling stations located along an inclined portion of the web support. Each reeling station has at least one reeling device operable to hold and rotatably drive a core onto which the web can wound to form a roll. Each reeling device is further operable to move the core into engagement with the web on the web support to initiate winding of the web onto the core, and to move the core away from the web support when the roll is fully wound. Winding is alternated between reeling devices, allowing the completed roll to be removed and a new core to be loaded at one reeling station while the other reeling station continues in full winding operation.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 29, 2001Publication date: October 3, 2002Applicant: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventors: C. Publication number: 20020129913Abstract: A board machine and method for making a multilayer cardboard web, in which a first layer of the web having a printable surface is formed in a first forming unit and carried on an extended forming wire thereof through a couching unit where the first layer is couched with one or more additional layers, the multilayer web then being carried on the extended wire to a pick-up point. An upper press felt of a double-felted press picks up the web at the pick-up point such that the printable surface faces downward and contacts the lower press felt through the nip of the press. The lower felt is smoother than the upper felt, and the lower felt contacts the lower press roll for a minimum sector angle beyond an exit of the nip to ensure that the web follows the lower felt.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2002Publication date: September 19, 2002Applicant: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Per Anders Artur Leandersson

Patent number: 6451171Abstract: A device is provided for dewatering a fabric in which the fabric is used in a papermaking process that exposes it to water before it is directed to the fabric dewatering device. The fabric dewatering device includes leading and trailing guide rolls about which the fabric is partially wrapped to form a loop portion. The loop portion is suspended between the leading and trailing guide rolls and includes a trough portion with a relatively small diameter that is positioned below the axes of the guide rolls. Running the fabric through the trough portion at high speeds exposes the water trapped therein to high centrifugal forces. The centrifugal forces expel the water from the fabric. The geometry and positioning of the trough portion is maintained either through a difference in fabric speed maintained by the leading and trailing nips or by the use of a rider roll positioned within the loop.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2002Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Dennis Edward Jewitt

Publication number: 20020117284Abstract: A vibration-minimizing suspension mechanism for a press roll is provided. The press roll and an opposing roll each having a rotational axis and cooperate to form a press nip adapted to impart a linear load on a fiber web passing therethrough. The linear load is oriented through the rotational axes of the press roll and the opposing roll. As such, the suspension mechanism comprises a suspension arm having opposed ends and a medially-disposed pivot, wherein the press roll is rotatably engaged at the rotational axis thereof with one of the opposed ends of the suspension arm. The suspension arm is further pivotably and adjustably mounted at the pivot so as to allow the pivot to be adjusted in substantially parallel relation to the linear load.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2001Publication date: August 29, 2002Applicant: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Tord Gustavsson

Patent number: 6409884Abstract: A press device having an extended press nip for pressing a running paper or paperboard web, comprising a carrier supporting a press shoe via a plurality of loading cylinders, out of which at least a few comprise a first cylinder member having a first end attached to or integrated in the press shoe, and a second cylinder member having a second end attached to or integrated in the carrier. The first and the second cylinder members are slidably coupled to each other by a coupling member, wherein the coupling member and the first cylinder member are displaceable in relation to each other with a first length of stroke, while the coupling member and the second cylinder member are displaceable in relation to each other with a second length of stroke. The coupling member is designed so that the first length of stroke runs closer to the carrier than the second length of stroke.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2001Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Erik Brox

Patent number: 6402890Abstract: A shoe press unit comprises a support beam, a shoe element movably supported on the beam, a pressing unit arranged between the beam and the shoe element for urging the shoe element away from the beam and toward a counter element, and a flexible belt that is arranged to slide over the pressing surface of the shoe element. An oil evacuation arrangement is affixed to the shoe element proximate an upstream edge region thereof. The oil evacuation arrangement has an inlet opening located such that excess oil expelled from between the belt and the shoe element passes through the inlet opening. An evacuation duct is connected with the container for evacuating oil therefrom, and the duct is movably connected to an outlet pipe within the shoe press unit. In one embodiment, the duct is connected via a flexible bellows to a pipe fixed to the outlet pipe.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventors: Lars Gustavsson, Mattias Alsing, Sven-Ove Andersson

Publication number: 20020062936Abstract: A paper machine for manufacturing textured soft paper comprises a press section with a press nip, through which an impermeable belt and a felt run with the fibrous web between them, a drying cylinder and a transfer roll forming a nip for transfer of the web to the drying cylinder. According to the invention the belt is a texturing belt having a back layer and a web-contacting layer having depressions with surface portions situated between them to form a relief pattern in the web upon passage through the press nip, the texturing belt running from the press to the drying cylinder in order to carry the textured web to the transfer nip. The felt runs away from the texturing belt before a water film formed in the press nip on the texturing belt breaks up. A device is provided before the transfer nip to apply adhesive on the drying cylinder.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2001Publication date: May 30, 2002Applicant: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventors: Ingvar B.E. Publication number: 20020060036Abstract: A dry end of a tissue machine is made shorter by close-coupling a reel-up to the drying section and supporting the web from the drying section to the reel-up by a foil or a belt such that web stability is maintained, thus allowing high-speed operation. The foil's downstream edge can form a nip with the paper roll and nip load can be controlled by controlling pivotal movement of the foil. The reel-up can include a calendering belt for calendering the web as it passes through a nip between the belt and a reel drum supported on the belt, and a rotatable reel spool on which a paper roll is wound in nipping engagement with the reel drum. Alternatively, the reel drum can be eliminated and the paper roll can be supported on the belt. A composite shaftless core for winding is also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2001Publication date: May 23, 2002Applicant: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Anders Tommy Linden

Patent number: 6379503Abstract: Machine equipment in a paper or board machine comprising at least one wear ledge for contact with a clothing, and a support body for the wear ledge and a device for mounting the wear ledge to its support body. In accordance with the invention, the mounting device has a locking bar arranged in a groove in the wear ledge, and a cavity is formed in the support body and contains a press bar. The support body defines a plurality of holes extending from the cavity and open toward the groove in the wear ledge. Connecting elements extend through the holes and are rigidly connected to the clamping bar and the press bar, and spring members in the cavity act between the press bar and an opposite support surface of the cavity to retain the wear ledge against the support body in a stable operating position. An expandable hose is arranged in the cavity so as, when activated, to press against the press bar so that the spring members are compressed and the wear ledge becomes free for pulling out along the locking bar.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2001Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Karlstad ABInventor: Per Anders Jansson
