  • Patent number: 9631415
Abstract: The fenestration structures include external frame segments facing the interior and exterior surfaces of a building wall, and an internal frame segment “sandwiched” between the external frame segments. The external frame segments are made from a relatively hard, dense and/or resilient material, such as hard wood, while the internal frame segment is made from paulownia which is a moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable thermal barrier material. The external frame segments therefore provide durable and attractive exterior and interior surfaces of the fenestration frame, while the internal paulownia segment provides superior resistance to thermal transfer across the frame, while also remaining dimensionally stable across a variety of moisture and temperature levels. Internal paulownia segments may be positioned around the entire periphery of the fenestration frame to create a comprehensive thermal barrier.

  • Patent number: 9556668
Abstract: A window includes a weather seal system that employs two seals. The first seal is located towards an exterior surface of the window and forms an air-permeable water barrier between an active sash and a sill. The second seal is located towards an interior surface of the window and forms a substantially air-impermeable and water-impermeable barrier between the active sash and the sill.

  • Patent number: 9556665
Abstract: According to some embodiments, a multi-panel door system includes a fixed panel and an active panel. Both panels are secured to the astragal of the door frame by securement members driven into and through hinges connected to the active panel, through the astragal, and into the fixed panel. The securement members are driven through a middle portion of the astragal stem in order to align the fixed and active panels in a recessed position with respect to the door frame. The fixed panel and the active panel are coplanar. Hinge support plates are placed between the hinges and the astragal and communicate forces transmitted through the securement members into deeper portions of the astragal.

  • Patent number: 9482046
Abstract: A window covering for a fenestration product having a viewing area includes a plurality of slats extending substantially horizontally, a ladder extending substantially vertically and supporting the slats, and a blind mechanism. The blind mechanism includes a lift mechanism and a tilt ring. The lift mechanism is operably connected to the slats to raise and lower the slats. The tilt ring is operably connected to the ladder and to the lift mechanism such that the tilt ring rotates with the lift mechanism through at least a portion of a revolution of the lift mechanism to tilt the slats when the lift mechanism rotates.

  • Patent number: 9470029
Abstract: A casement window includes a lower hinge that has an oil-impregnated roller to facilitate easy opening and closing of the window, particularly with larger, heavier casement windows. In some instances, the lower hinge includes a housing having a roller portion and a guide portion. A roller can be disposed within the roller portion and a guide can be snap fitted into the guide portion. In some cases, a removable shipping spacer fits under the lower hinge and helps to support the weight of the sash during transport and storage.

  • Patent number: 9399885
Abstract: A fenestration unit includes an outer frame portion, an inner frame portion and a supplemental fixation system that secures the outer frame portion to the inner frame portion. The supplemental fixation system increases a base force required to flex and release a complementary fit between a coupling feature of the outer frame portion and a retaining feature of the inner frame portion to a final force required to decouple the first and second frame portions.

  • Patent number: 9316041
Abstract: A building entryway assembly has the appearance of a fixed sidelight and the functionality of a hinged sidelight. The building entryway assembly includes a hinged main entryway door and at least one hinged sidelight having a lock side that meets the lock side of the main door, such that the sidelight can be selectively opened in addition to the main door when needed to expand the entryway access area. An astragal is fixed to an outer surface of the sidelight at its lock side, and the door threshold includes an astragal boot which aligns with the sidelight astragal when the sidelight is in its closed position. When so aligned, the astragal and astragal boot have the appearance of a fixed astragal extending from the threshold to the header, such that the sidelight appears to be a standard fixed unit with its hinged functionality disguised.
