Abstract: A mixture of poly(vinyl halide) and epoxidized benzyl fatty acid ester, preferably epoxidized benzyl soyate (EBS), is disclosed. The epoxidized benzyl fatty acid ester as a plasticizer replaces common high molecular weight phthalates, such as diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP), which are conventionally used for the manufacture of wire and cable insulation and jacketing. The epoxidized benzyl fatty acid ester, a bio-plasticizer, unexpectedly outperforms the higher molecular weight DIDP as demonstrated by superior retention of Strain at Break after accelerated aging at elevated temperatures.

Abstract: A compound suitable for hydroclaving is disclosed, comprising polyester, polysulfone, and an epoxy-functional styrene-acrylate oligomer. In order for successful repetitious hydroclaving to be possible, the compound must also have a polysulfone content of greater than 45 weight percent of the compound.
Abstract: A masterbatch containing one or more colors of decorative particulate additive is disclosed and is particularly suitable for use in thermoplastic elastomer plastic articles.
Abstract: Migratory assisting agents are used to improve antimicrobial efficacy of antimicrobial masterbatches, the polymer compounds these antimicrobial masterbatches are let down into, and the articles made therefrom. The migratory assisting agents function by carrying the antimicrobial agents while the migratory assisting agent transfers or “migrates” to the surface of a polymer compound or article formed from the polymer compound. As a result, antimicrobial agents are brought to the surface where there is exposure to bacterial contamination.
Abstract: A thermoplastic elastomer compound includes styrenic block copolymer and high softening point tackifier. The styrenic block copolymer has a Copolymer Tan Delta Peak Temperature and the thermoplastic elastomer compound has a Compound Tan Delta Peak Temperature. The Compound Tan Delta Peak Temperature is greater than the Copolymer Tan Delta Peak Temperature. The thermoplastic elastomer compound exhibits useful damping properties at or above room temperature while also advantageously possessing improved stability for processing and/or applications at high temperatures and upon exposure to weathering.
Abstract: A radiopaque, optically translucent thermoplastic polyurethane compound is disclosed. The use of nano-sized particles of barium sulfate optionally in combination with a minor amount of certain dispersion aids allows the barium sulfate to be sufficiently dispersed within the thermoplastic polyurethane to retain optical translucency according to a defined Haze Determination Test. Medical devices, needing both visual spectrum observation before and during in-vivo medical use and radiopacity monitoring during in-vivo medical use, benefit from this compound. Optionally, a surface enhancer can also be used.
Abstract: Reactive extrusion can be used in a continuous, solvent-less preparation of imide oligomers involving two competing reactions among three ingredients, the first reaction between a dianhydride and a diamine and the second reaction between an endcap and the same diamine. The imide oligomer can form a composite via conventional production methods or via formation of a film from imide oligomer re-melted in an extruder before being impregnated into tape or fabric.
Abstract: A crosslinkable bioplasticizer is disclosed, a mixture of an epoxy-functional bio-derived plasticizer and an aromatic dianhydride. When heated, the mixture crosslinks, which can be accelerated by the addition of a Lewis Acid metal catalyst. The crosslinked bioplasticizer can be melt compounded into a thermoplastic resin or can be formed in situ in the thermoplastic resin. The crosslinking of the bioplasticizer can reduce blooming of the bioplasticizer to the surface of a plastic article made by extrusion, molding, calendering, or thermoforming techniques.
Abstract: Poly(hexano-6-lactam) (also known as Nylon 6) compounds that are flame retardant using non-halogenated ingredients are disclosed. Polyphenylene ether acts as a synergist when used in specific amounts in combination with polyphosphonate to achieve a V-0 rating in a UL 94 test at thicknesses of about 3.18 mm.
Abstract: Poly(hexamethylene adipamide), (also referred to as Nylon 6,6) compounds that are flame retardant using non-halogenated ingredients are disclosed. Polyphenylene ether or bismaleimides act as synergists when used in specific amounts in combination with polyphosphonate to achieve a V-1 or V-0 rating in a UL 94 test at thicknesses of about 3.18 mm.
Abstract: A thermoplastic elastomer compound is disclosed having a high strain recovery rate and a high strain fixity rate to provide shape memory, preferably manageable shape memory. One type of thermoplastic elastomer compound is comprises a maleated styrenic block copolymer and polycaprolactone to achieve the shape memory. A second type of thermoplastic elastomer compound comprises styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene and a paraffin wax having less than about 0.5% oil content. Shape modes of articles made from the thermoplastic elastomer compound can be altered by at least one thermo-mechanical event to cause deformation of the compound from a first shape to a second shape with retention of the compound in the second shape for any reasonable time interval.
Abstract: Plastisol compositions having a two-resin interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) are disclosed. The compositions begin with blocked isocyanate grafted acrylic polymer, blocked isocyanate urethane prepolymer, plasticizer, optionally pigment, and optionally thixotropic agent. When subjected to a thermal cure, the isocyanate groups on the acrylic polymer and urethane prepolymer both become unblocked and both react with the crosslinking agent to form an interpenetrating acrylic-polyurethane network. The two-resin IPN offers improved storage stability, hand-feel characteristics, and processing properties for textile printing among other uses. Preferably these plastisol compositions are essentially free of polyvinyl halides and phthalates restricted for regulatory reasons.

Abstract: A completely non-halogenated flame retardant polycarbonate compound is disclosed. The compound comprises a polycarbonate, non-halogenated drip suppressant ingredients which react in the presence of heat to form a drip suppressant adduct, and a non-halogenated char former. The compound can achieve a UL 94 rating of V-0 at a thickness of at least 3.2 mm and otherwise achieves no dripping/igniting of the cotton indicator during that test.
Abstract: Low molecular weight polyphenylene ether (PPE) is made from higher molecular weight PPE without using solvents by extruding the higher molecular weight PPE with a phenolic modifier and a redistribution catalyst. The low molecular weight PPE has a Mw/Mn polydispersity greater than about 2 and a Mn ranging from about 10,000 to about 20,000.
Abstract: High temperature nylon compounds that are flame retardant using non-halogenated ingredients are disclosed. Poly phenylene ether, or alternatively the combination of polyphenylene ether and bismaleimides, act as synergists with polyphosphonate to achieve a V-0 rating in a UL 94 test at thicknesses of about 3.18 mm or, preferably, about 1.59 mm.
Abstract: Significant disadvantages of the use of polylactic acid (PLA), lack of good heat stability and flame retardance, have been overcome by the use of resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) in combination with talc. The compound achieves a threshold of 65° C. in heat deflection temperature and V-0 flame retardance at 1.6 mm thickness.
