Abstract: A network access node identifies a component carrier within an unlicensed radio spectrum, determines whether or not to configure the component carrier for use as a secondary component carrier, and based on the determining configures the component carrier for use as a secondary component carrier companion to a primary component carrier within a licensed radio spectrum, In various non-limiting embodiments the network node senses the component carrier within the unlicensed radio spectrum, and as more data is needed to make the determination employs a mobile device to also sense and further to measure the component carrier within the unlicensed radio spectrum. Specific procedures are detailed for both the network node and the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8612593
Abstract: A user equipment UE stores a first list of private cells to which the apparatus is authorized to access (e.g., a CSG whitelist). While under control of a serving first cell, the UE determines from a transmission received from a neighbor second cell a physical cell identity PCI of the neighbor cell, then compares the determined PCI to a stored second list to determine whether the UE is authorized to access the neighbor cell. In one embodiment the second list maps PCIs to CSG IDs; if the determined PCI matches one in the second list the CSG ID is selected and it that matches one in the first list the UE is authorized access. In another embodiment the second list is only the PCI of those CSG cells on the UE's first list that are within the area served by the serving cell, so if the determined PCI matches one in the second list the UE is authorized access.

  • Patent number: 8606194
Abstract: Embodiments provide a receiver and a method for receiving data transmitted via a combination of a first signal modulated at a first carrier frequency, and a second signal modulated at a second carrier frequency, different to the first carrier frequency. In one embodiment the receiver includes a local oscillator and is configured to adaptively configure the local oscillator to operate at a first local oscillator frequency and a second local oscillator frequency, different to the first frequency, in dependence on a signal strength of the first signal relative to a signal strength of the second signal.

  • Patent number: 8606216
Abstract: A wireless device has two or more radio systems and SIM channels. At least a part of the first radio system can be shut down to reduce the power consumed by the device. This occurs if the first radio system is unable to obtain suitable service for the first SIM channel and the second radio system is at least one of: (i) providing at least some service on the second SIM channel for the device, and (ii) capable of searching for service for the first radio system.

  • Patent number: 8605668
Abstract: A user equipment UE obtains channel configurations from each of a serving cell and n neighbor cells which have been determined to be suitable for data communications with the UE, from which the UE creates a combined channel configuration and utilizes it for multipoint communications with those cells. In specific embodiments: the respective channel configurations are obtained from the respective cells' system information; the n neighbor cells are determined to be suitable by the UE comparing each cell's received signal strength/quality against a threshold. The UE may get a neighbor cell list NCL and the threshold and consider each cell on the NCL as one of the n neighbor cells if its signal strength/quality exceed the threshold, then the UE may acquire system information for only those n neighbor cells instead of all cells on the NCL. The UE then reports in uplink signaling that the n neighbor cells are suitable.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided to facilitate the establishment of device-to-device communications, such as non-cellular communications or cellular communications in a licensed exempt band. A method and apparatus receive cellular signals including one or more beacon transmission parameters, such as a beacon transmission interval and an identifier, and a beacon transmission status flag. The method and apparatus may also determine that the beacon transmission status flag is set to authorize beacon transmissions and then cause non-cellular beacon signals to be repeatedly transmitted in accordance with the one or more beacon transmission parameters. The method and apparatus may also cause a device-to-device connection to be established following transmission of the beacon signals. The device-to-device connection may be either a non-cellular device-to-device connection or a cellular device-to-device connection.

  • Publication number: 20130314134
Abstract: Signal synchronisers synchronise input signals with a clock signal. The input of each synchroniser is connected to a first input and the output of each synchroniser is connected to a second input of a respective first gate arrangement. The first gate arrangements provide an output signal only if there is an input signal on the first input and none on the second input or vice versa. The outputs of each of the first gate arrangements is connected to respective inputs of a second gate arrangement, which provides an output signal if there is a signal on any of its inputs. The output of the second gate arrangement is connected to a third gate arrangement which operates such that the clock signal to the synchronisers is only enabled when there is a change to the state of a signal received at the input of at least one of the synchronisers.

  • Patent number: 8593990
Abstract: A network sends downlink a neighbor frequency list for redirection (with at least one neighbor frequency) for measurement, for example event-triggered measurement. For each frequency in the list which a user equipment UE finds to satisfy one or more criteria, for example event-triggering criteria, the idle-state or semi-idle-state UE then takes a measurement of the neighbor frequency and checks whether the measurement satisfies reporting criteria. The UE sends to its serving cell an indication of the neighbor frequency or frequencies whose measurement meets the reporting criteria, without reporting the measurement, such as in a RRC Connection Request message. The serving cell then redirects the UE to establish a connection on a target frequency selected from the indicated neighbor frequencies, and this redirect may be in a RRC Connection Reject message.

  • Patent number: 8594646
Abstract: A wireless device is wirelessly connected to a wireless network which is controlled by network control apparatus. The wireless device operates in a first activity state in which data can be transmitted to and received from the wireless network over one or more dedicated logical channels. The wireless device transitions to operate in a second activity state having lower power consumption than the first activity state if it is determined by the wireless device that data has not been transmitted by and has not been received at the wireless device for a predetermined period of time. The predetermined period of time is known to both the wireless device and the network control apparatus. The transition takes place synchronously without requiring control signals to be passed between the wireless device and the network control apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20130308557
Abstract: Embodiments include a method for physical layer transmission in a network equipment including receiving, from a higher layer, messages to be transmitted during a subframe on one or more control channels. The number of elements required (i.e. aggregation level) for each control channel is determined. A plurality of physical resource blocks (PRBs) for transmitting the control channels and partitioning the PRBs into clusters is allocated. The interleaving depth (IDP) for each cluster is determined. Each element is mapped to a cluster according to the IDP for that cluster. A transmission signal including the clusters is generated.

  • Publication number: 20130308479
Abstract: An arrangement is described for adapting outer loop precoder phase combiner in a radio communication system having coordinated multipoint transmission. In the arrangement ACK/NACK-message received as a response to a transmitted data packet is used for adapting the phase. When a NACK-message is received the phase may be adapted or it may be further determined if the error was due to error in channel code or due to destructive inter-point signal combining. If the error was due to destructive combining the phase is adjusted.

  • Publication number: 20130301765
Abstract: A communications method uses simultaneously at least two receivers to reduce a need for data retransmissions. When using multiple receivers it is enough that at least one of the receivers outputs a correct bit set which are preferably checked by Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC). The method comprises the following to be performed in a radio modem: a) receiving the same sample of a signal in a first receiver and in a second receiver; and in response to the same sample b) obtaining a first bit set from the first receiver and a second bit set from the second receiver; and c) determining whether the first bit set or the second bit set is a correct bit set. A retransmission request is sent only when the first and second bit sets are erroneous. This reduces latencies in the transmission. One can change receivers depending on the radio frequency (RF) circumstances.
