  • Patent number: 4395149
Abstract: A ribbon drive mechanism for a typewriter or similar machine in which the supply spool and a first ribbon guide are fixed with respect to the machine frame, and the take-up spool and a second ribbon guide are vertically moveable with respect to the machine frame. The ribbon is fed past the print point when the take-up spool and the second ribbon guide adjacent thereto are in their raised position. • Patent number: 4391838
Abstract: There is provided a continuous process for fluidizing shortening compositions including a major amount of a normally liquid base oil and a minor amount of a normally solid lipid, the latter exhibiting polymorphic behavior. The composition is flowed through a length of tube and submitted to temperature oscillations alternating between a high temperature which is above the melting point of certain of the crystalline forms of the triglyceride but below that of the desired form (beta), and a low temperature which is below but close to the melting point of the lowest melting crystalline form (alpha).

  • Patent number: 4384633
Abstract: An improved acoustic transport member for use in a keyboard having key operated strikers individually actuatable for inducing acoustic energy in the form of sound waves which propagate through the member from selected inducing positions therealong. A first portion of the member is fabricated in the form of a series of tabs to provide discrete impact positions for generating sound waves in response to impact actuation of related strikers. A second portion integrally connected with the first portion links all of the tabs and functions as a sound corridor for receiving and transporting all sound waves generated as a result of the selected striker impacting its related tab. An aperture is provided through the tabs. A peripheral rim of the aperture provides sound reflecting boundaries that define sound passages on the tabs for directing the sound waves in different directions in communicating the sound waves from the tabs into the corridor.

  • Patent number: 4383075
Abstract: An aqueous dispersed thermosetting coating composition comprises a high Tg acrylic latex polymer containing reactive hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups, or similar reactive groups, for cross-linking the acrylic polymer, and a polyvinylidene fluoride polymer, wherein the composition is adapted to be heat cured at temperatures above about 350.degree. F. The polyvinyl fluoride polymer fuses and becomes homogenously dispersed throughout the thermoset acrylic-melamine matrix polymer.

  • Patent number: 4381501
Abstract: Polarity of transducer signals is controlled in encoding apparatus of the acoustic rod type, e.g. where key-actuated strikers impact an acoustic bar having a transducer at each end of the bar, the impact giving rise to divergent acoustic waves. The wave fronts of these acoustic waves are sensed by the transducers, the output signals of which are used to produce codes corresponding to the actuated key. By varying the shape of the bar at each point of impact, the polarity of the wave fronts can be controlled so as to distinguish the operation of adjacent strikers and thus provide correspondingly coded outputs or can be combined with elapsed time sensing systems to afford more reliable encoding even in the presence of lot-to-lot differences in the bar material's acoustic wave properties--differences aggravated by temperature changes.

  • Patent number: 4378552
Abstract: Encoding apparatus for a business machine includes a resilient striker for inducing diverging sound waves within a rod by impact with it at a given location. Transducers positioned along the rod on each side of the striker and at unequal distances from it, convert the sound wave fronts into a first and a second output signal having a predetermined time interval between them which is dependent upon the location of impact with the rod. The transducers are connected to a logic unit which includes an oscillator-driven binary counter. The first output signal starts the counter and subsequent arrival of the second output signal determines the elapsed time, the counter output at that instant being a binary code value usable for any desired purpose: control, display, etc.

  • Patent number: 4376469
Abstract: An acoustic transport member for use in a keyboard having key operated strikers individually actuatable for inducing acoustic energy in the form of sound waves which propagate through the member from selected inducing positions therealong. A first portion of the member is fabricated to provide discrete impact positions for generating sound waves in response to impact actuation of related strikers. A second portion integrally connected with the first portion links all impact positions for receiving and transporting all sound waves generated by the first portion. A step joins the first with the second portions to allow communication of the sound waves from the first portion into the second portion yet thereafter provides unidirectional acoustic separation therebetween which effectively minimizes wave dispersion by substantially isolating the propagating sound waves in the second portion from coming into contact with successive impact positions of the first portion.
