  • Patent number: 6989878
Abstract: Transflective twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal displays(LCDs) having enhanced transmission efficiencies. Due to the use of circularly polarized light, the novel TN transflective LCD uses a new operation mode between the conventional First and Second Minimums, which alters the retardation value of the reflection and the transmission portions, where the retardation values each include a cell gap spacing. This results in the cell gap spacing in the transmission portion of the transflective LCD to be approximately triple the cell gap spacing in the reflection portion of the transflective LCD whereby the transmission efficiency increases to approximately 90 percent.

  • Patent number: 6985197
Abstract: A transflective liquid crystal display comprising an active device array substrate, a facing substrate, a liquid crystal layer and a reflector. The liquid crystal molecules in the transparent area are driven by a potential between the transparent pixel electrode and the common electrode. The liquid crystal molecules in the reflective area are driven by a potential between the transparent pixel electrode and the active device array substrate or the auxiliary electrode on the facing substrate. Under the condition of a single cell gap, the electric field applied to the transparent area and the reflective area can control the change in effective phase so as to optimize the performance.

  • Patent number: 6982777
Abstract: A liquid crystal display (LCD) and fabricating method thereof. The fabricating method includes providing a double-layered substrate structure having a first seal pattern, inserted along the periphery thereof, wherein the first seal pattern has a notch for liquid crystal injection, facing an injecting direction of the liquid crystals, forming a second seal pattern near the notch, parallel to the injecting direction, injecting the liquid crystals via the notch along the injecting direction, and sealing the notch with a third seal pattern. According to the invention, the permeating rate of the third seal pattern is accelerated, enhancing the sealing of the liquid crystal display, and increasing productivity. Further, the second seal pattern enhances the adhesion between the substrate and the third seal pattern, protecting the cured third seal pattern from peeling and bubble formation.

  • Patent number: 6922221
Abstract: A quarter-wave film having a wide bandwidth is invented. A preferred device configuration includes a chromatic half-wave film adjacent to a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) film. When a linear polarizer is attached to the side of chromatic half-wave film and the angles of all the optical components are properly set, the combination of chromatic half-wave film and TN-LC film behaves as a broadband quarter-wave film. Based on this idea, a broadband circular polarizer is invented if the linear polarizer, the chromatic half-wave film and the TN-LC film are combined together. In addition, this idea can also be applied to reflective liquid crystal display devices, which include a linear polarizer, a chromatic half-wave film, a TN-LC cell and a reflector.

  • Patent number: 6911233
Abstract: A thin film deposition method using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition is described. In a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition chamber, plasma is used to enhance the chemical reaction to form a thin film on a substrate. The substrate is then removed, followed by passing a cleaning gas into the chamber to remove residues in the chamber. Before loading another batch of substrate in the chamber, a pre-deposition process is performed to isolate contaminants generated from the cleaning process. A discharge plasma treatment is then conducted to lower the amount of accumulated electrical charges.
