Patent number: 5794770Abstract: A package especially suited for shipping and storing cut paper and for providing rapid and easy access to the paper when the carton is opened. The package comprises a carton having a lid that may be removed and one side which may be pivoted down when the lid is removed to facilitate access to the contents of the carton for ease of unloading of paper from the carton and ease of reloading. A preferred construction employs a moisture vapor barrier in the walls of the carton to maintain the moisture content of the paper in the carton within acceptable limits when the package is subjected to adverse environmental conditions. In this form of the invention the need for individual ream wraps is eliminated, and the package may be opened and re-closed without detriment to the moisture vapor barrier.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1995Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: Union Camp CorporationInventors: John Frederick Plomgren, Billy P. Patent number: 5783657Abstract: A low molecular weight, ester-terminated polyamide may be blended with a liquid hydrocarbon to form a transparent composition having gel consistency. The ester-terminated polyamide is prepared by reacting "x" equivalents of dicarboxylic acid wherein at least 50% of those equivalents are from polymerized fatty acid, "y" equivalents of diamine such as ethylene diamine, and "z" equivalents of monoalcohol having at least 4 carbon atoms. The stoichiometry of the reaction mixture is such that 0.9.ltoreq.{x/(y+z)}.ltoreq.1.1 and 0.1.ltoreq.{z/(y+z)}.ltoreq.0.7. The reactants are heated until they reach reaction equilibrium. The gel contains about 5-50% ester-terminated polyamide, with the remainder preferably being pure hydrocarbon. The gels are useful in formulating personal care products and other articles wherein some degree of gel-like or self-supporting consistency is desired.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1996Date of Patent: July 21, 1998Assignee: Union Camp CorporationInventors: Mark S. Patent number: 5777023Abstract: Solid compositions containing diamidediurethanes are useful as components of hot-melt inks. Diamidiurethanes may be prepared by reaction of a hydroxycarboxylic acid and/or lactone with either (1) monoamine and diisocyanate or (2) diamine and monoisocyanate. Alternatively, the diamidediurethane may be prepared by reacting a non-hydric carboxylic acid and/or anhydride with an hydroxyamine and a diisocyanate. The reactant identity and stoichiometry, as well as the reaction conditions, may be tailored to optimize the formation of diamidediurethane in preference to high molecular weight oligomers. The hot-melt inks may be used in ink jet, flexographic, gravure and intaglio printing.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1996Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Assignee: Union Camp CorporationInventor: Mark S. Patent number: 5770839Abstract: A container for storing and cooking food, especially microwave cooking of popcorn, and for use as a container in which to serve the popcorn after it is popped. The container of the invention comprises a bag having front and back panels that define a cooking chamber between them, and a fold-over flap that projects from the back panel and defines an expansion chamber in communication with the cooking chamber. A microwave susceptor is provided in the front panel to absorb microwave energy during microwave cooking to heat and cook the popcorn in the cooking chamber, and as the popcorn expands during the popping cycle, the cooking and expansion chambers expand to form a single large interior volume for containing the popped popcorn. The front and back panels and the fold-over flap define a tripartite structure which is folded flat during shipment and storage, and which is placed flat on the front panel when it is desired to pop the popcorn.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1996Date of Patent: June 23, 1998Assignee: Union Camp CorporationInventors: Richard P. Patent number: 5743177Abstract: A cross directional caliper control system for a calender. A coarse caliper control mechanism adjusts the pressure over a first range of values. A fine caliper control mechanism adjusts the pressure over a second range of values, where the second range of values is smaller than the first range of values. Sensors sense the dimension of the paper web passing through the calender. A control mechanism coupled to the coarse calender control mechanism, the fine calender mechanism and the sensors controls the caliper across the width of the paper by varying the nip pressure with both the coarse caliper control mechanism and the fine caliper control mechanism to shift the variability of the caliper so that it corresponds to nip pressure adjustments within the second range of values. Bumpless adjustments of the coarse control mechanism are made by making counteracting adjustments to the fine control mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 1996Date of Patent: April 28, 1998Assignee: Union Camp CorporationInventor: Edward M.
