  • Patent number: 4992525
Abstract: Cationic resins based on epoxy resins which are modified through the introduction of phosphoric acid segments and the process of producing the resins are described. The reaction of the phosphoric acid is carried out in a multiple-step process whereby, in a first step, the diester is formed through reaction of ortho-phosphoric acid with 2 moles of a monoepoxy compound or through reaction of a polyphosphoric acid with n-1 moles of a monoalcohol and subsequent reaction with n+1 moles of a monoepoxy compound. The remaining acid group is reacted with a di- or polyepoxy resin. The products obtained can still contain unreacted epoxy groups. The protonable groups are introduced via the epoxy groups and/or via the hydroxy groups present or set free by opening of the oxirane ring. The binders can be combined with hardening components or may be formulated as self-crosslinking binders. The binders have excellent resistance to corrosion when stoved as electrodeposited coatings.

  • Patent number: 4990579
Abstract: Crosslinking cationic paint binders, preferably cathodically depositable paint binders comprising (poly)-2-hydroxyalkylurea compounds as a crosslinking agent are described. The 2-hydroxyalkylureas are obtained by reacting organic polyisocyanates with secondary beta-hydroxyalkylamines. The crosslinking agents of the invention permit film formation in the stoving range of about 140.degree. C., which is particularly favorable for water-based paints. Additionally, selective semi-blocking which is made possible through the difference in reactively between the NCO-groups of individual polyisocyanates is enhanced through use of the secondary amino groups, in comparison to through use of hydroxyl groups which are conventionally used.

  • Patent number: 4973613
Abstract: Cathodically depositable electrodeposition paints contain binder combinations of cationic film-forming resins with organic titanium compounds which are obtained by reacting tetraalkyl orthotitanates or titanium acetyl acetonates with NH-functional .beta.-hydroxyalkylamine compounds, subsequently reacting with formaldehyde and with removal of the alcohol and/or acetyl acetone formed. The stoved paint films exhibit an excellent anti-corrosion effect on non-pretreated sheet steel.

  • Patent number: 4968730
Abstract: Preparation of pigment paste resins for cathodically depositable coating compositions based on epoxy resin-amine adducts obtained from unmodified or modified epoxy resins, which by partial or complete reaction of secondary amino groups with formaldehyde contain oxazolidine structures; whose tertiary amino groups introduced via primary-tertiary diamines are quaternized to at least 20 mol % using an organic acid and a monoglycidyl compound and which in a solution adjusted with water to a correct application viscosity contain a total of 80 to 100 millimoles of acid per 100 g of solid resin are described. The pigment pastes possess, both in concentrated and dilute form, a stability which meets practical requirements and, because of their rheology, are readily processed to ensure formation of defect-free films both during deposition and crosslinking by stoving. The applied films have good properties.

  • Patent number: 4939226
Abstract: Cationic paint binders based on polyether urethanes are formed by selective reaction of one NCO-group of a diisocyanate which contains NCO-groups of different reactivities with the primary hydroxyl groups of a polyhydroxypolyether in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo-2,2,2-octane (DABCO) as catalyst, and subsequently reacting the remaining NCO-group of the diisocyanate with a secondary amine. The binders which are largely free of low molecular basic by-products are used for formulating paints, particularly cathodically depositable electrodeposition paints, which are water-dilutable after protonation.

  • Patent number: 4892913
Abstract: Crosslinking components for cationic paint binders wherein substituted ureas obtained by reacting beta-hydroxyamines with isocyanate compounds are converted into biuret compounds by further reaction with isocyanates. The cross-linking components thus obtained, when combined with base resins containing hydroxyl groups and/or primary or secondary amino groups, yield films having an increased hardening capacity and greater resistance to stone chipping.

  • Patent number: 4837291
Abstract: Cationic paint binders, water-dilutable upon protonation, which crosslink internally at elevated temperatures are obtained through reaction of beta-hydroxyamines of the general formula- ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a (cyclo)alkyl radical and/or a hydroxyalkyl radical and/or a tertiary amino(cyclo)alkyl radical, or optionally a radical resulting from the reaction of glycidyl groups with a primary-secondary amine or a diprimary amine and R.sub.2 is an aliphatic and/or aromatic radical of a polyepoxy compound, with partially blocked polyisocyanates and subsequent reaction with formaldehyde. In addition to having excellent film properties, the products show particularly favorable characteristics for processing, since they do not exhibit the thixotropy effects normal with such systems.
